"What can I do with this notebook?"

This is a pretty common question in subs like this. Either someone received a new notebook as a gift, or they couldn't help themselves from buying a new one, or they have a partially used notebook they want to fill.

Or they're trying to figure out what to do with the massive stack they've accumulated after years of "I'll find a use for this" and allowing that as justification to keep buying more... Ahem.

Beyond the normal "Just write in it, use it as a diary," here's some ideas on what you could do with an unused or unfinished notebook:

  • Commonplace / zibaldone journal
  • Brain dump / soliloquy journal
  • Quotes / lyrics / poetry
  • Media / entertainment tracker (Movies, tv shows, games, etc)
  • Bullet journal (method for a DIY daily planner, get started here)
  • To-do lists
  • All kinds of lists (e.g., "lists of 100" like "100 things you saw this week")
  • Gratitude
  • Grievances (the opposite of gratitude, what bothered you today)
  • Idea notebook
  • Quick thoughts
  • Art (Sketches / drawings / zentangles)
  • Dream log
  • The Artist's Way Morning Pages
  • Travel journal
  • Things you've learned
  • Bucket list / goals
  • Unsent letters
  • Dedicated handwriting practice
  • RPG journaling (there's games you can find online for it and r/Solo_Roleplaying)
  • Food or drink tracker, such as keeping track of teas you've tried
  • Things you overheard that are worth remembering
  • People you meet
  • Funny facts
  • Gaming journal
  • Language practice

Added since I made this post-

  • Keep track of plants/gardening
  • Master index for all your journals
  • Project tracker
  • Hobby tracker
  • A place to write down memories and stories from your life
  • Memories of friends and family
  • Review places you go
  • Homeowner notes like chores, bills, and when things need to be fixed/replaced
  • A journal to give your child(ren) someday, such as letters to them and their milestones
  • Notes and milestones for pets
  • Things like tarot or shadow work
  • Swatches (ink, yarn, embroidery thread, ribbon, washi tape, etc)
  • Scent tracker (perfume/cologne, would not suggest attempting to store the actual scents in there)
  • General feelings
  • Chronic pain tracker
  • Prayer/devotional journal
  • "Practice" journal to get thoughts out before actual journaling
  • Distractions when you should've been doing something else

Feel free to suggest more in the comments.

DIY Got tired of waiting for Paper Republic to make Bordeaux part of their permanent collection, so I made my own

What the title says! This cost me $27.50 in materials (Badalassi Carlo leather, elastic cord, charm) and took less than 5 minutes to make.

The best part: it’s in A5, not some weird ass proprietary size 😂

My only regret is punching two sets of holes. I should have just punched out one set and doubled up on the cords to retain the simplicity of the GV. Still happy to finally have my dream color, though!

Looking for options to cover embossing on Paper Republic GV XL

Post image
9 Upvotes

I bought a used Paper Republic Grand Voyager XL. I bought it knowing the front bottom corner was embossed with the previous owner's initials. My plan was originally to glue lace over the bottom edge to cover it up. But now that I have it in my hand, I don't like that idea anymore.

I'd love to hear any suggestions of things I can do to cover up the initials. I'm not very crafty, so things that require low skill levels are preferred lol.

notebooks or inserts with slightly smaller than A5 paper?

I have a hardcover notebook that I'm very fond of, and would like to reuse the cover by cutting out the bound pages and inserting another notebook inside. Unfortunately, it's not a standard sized notebook. The whole thing, including the cover, is just about A5 size, but the pages are 141x206 mm (A5 is 148x210) so just a smidge smaller, and if I put A5 paper in there, it just barely hangs over the edge. Does anyone know where to find notebooks that would fit this size cover?

please I'd love to not have to learn bookbinding to keep this cover 😭

Recommendation Looking for a notebook/combo for my niche need!

I’m a pharmacy technician with a scattered brain and I’ve recently been promoted to lead and have had more “administrative” tasks come my way. I’ve been leaving notes for myself at the station I tend to stick at but I’ve often run into the issue of someone else tossing them when I’m not there so I’d like to get a little notebook to keep myself a little more organized!

I really need something that allows me to keep track of daily/weekly/monthly tasks, schedule notes, and other goals and duties, as well as room to ideate/put notes for later reference down in. Being able to move pages around might be helpful for organization or removing outdated info

I’ve use Kokuyo campus smart rings plenty of times but they are a bit large for keeping at my station or carrying around. I’m also okay to use loose/refill paper in a separate cover as I could benefit from being able to have a few pockets for scratch notes and/or print outs.

No patient info will be going in this! So I don’t have to worry about being able to tear out pages easily. Paper-wise, I just need something that can handle gel ink without severe smudging.

If there’s anything else I should add, let me know!

Thank you!

Advice needed Help Finding Long Lost Notebook

I wish I had a picture, but sadly I don’t as it was almost 10 years ago. I’m looking for an A4 softcover notebook. I believe it might have also come in A3. I bought it in a stationary store in London (wish I could remember which).

* Quite thin & light (perhaps no more than 100 pages)
* Thread/stitch bound
* Able to be folded cover to cover (360 degrees)
* Ruled

The notebook’s styling was incredibly plain. It only had a small “box” on the front with two lines for a title and author. The one I had was yellow but the color is unimportant.

Or, if you have any suggestions for a notebook that fits those criteria (i.e. A4/A3, thin, thread/stitch bound, 360 degree fold), I’d also really appreciate that! Thank you!

Need help finding a notebook!

Post image

Hi I am reaching out to this subreddit because I have been pulling my hairs trying to find a specific type of notebook with the following properties:

- Basic, hardcover leather notebook or journal
- No straps, ties, or any other attachments
- BLANK, non ruled or non lined paper

One would think that something like this would be easy to find but I have been looking for hours now to no avail.
I attached a picture for reference.

Recently started dabbling in book binding and am really happy with how this turned out !

I love unlined paper but also love the functionality of dot graph, so I made my own (very) light dot graph on mohawk superfine paper. I found this chiroygami paper I loved for the end papers ..so as an ode to fall, I decorated the front in Japanese maple leaves.

Now I just have to find the courage to use it 😉

Recommendation Best Notebook

Thumbnail

I got this notebook over two years ago while exploring internship opportunities at my university, but I only recently started putting it to good use for meetings, jotting down quick notes, planning projects, tracking progress, and more.
This is probably the BEST notebook I’ve ever owned!
What I love most is how incredibly thin and lightweight it is. I barely even notice it when carrying it around! The matte leather cover has a nice, grippy texture, and its soft, flexible design makes flipping through pages much easier compared to notebooks with rigid covers.
But my FAVORITE features have to be the built-in bookmark ribbon and elastic band!
The bookmark makes it easy to pick up right where I left off, while the elastic band keeps the notebook securely closed, preventing pages from flipping around on windy days or getting bent inside my backpack.
And here’s the best part: the elastic band doubles as a pen holder! I can tuck a pen underneath it and ALWAYS have one ready whenever I need it. It works especially well with bulkier pens, which I personally prefer.
It’s such a simple, practical design, but those little details make a HUGE difference in everyday use. Easily one of my favorite notebooks!

Advice needed Looking for a "dupe" of Studio Oh!'s small coptic bound journals

I hope this is the right flair!

For six years now, I've used my stash of Studio Oh's small (I believe 5 x 7.25 inches) coptic bound journals for my diaries, and I love them. They stopped making them a couple years ago, though, and eventually, my stash will run out. I really want to keep the format, size and coptic-bound-ness for future diaries.

Do you guys know any good dupes of them, especially available in Europe? Figured that you guys here have the best chances at knowing a good replacement!

Thanks in advance!

Advice needed Searching for a good drawing ring binder

Just like the title says, I'm a lot more fan of binders, but the only one I could find had them on the side and ended up having the pages curved I'm, so it was uncomfortable, sometimes broke some papers and I lost a large zone I could draw.

I want to replace it by one that does fully place the papers on the hard cover so I can draw on that side (I don't draw on top of other papers bc it leaves a mark, although that might be a paper type issue)

Or something like that tbh, just searching for something hard covered, A5 size, and where I can relocate my drawing (and also prints since I want to add my dnd sheets there), any kind of recommendation are appreciated since I don't know much about notebooks types

Traveler's Notebook-like "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" themed?

I have a Group Erik Notebook, and I quite like it! i like the color of the material, and the Great Wave is rendered really nicely.
however, as I got deeper into notebooks, I found out that the inserts it uses are smaller, and standard TN inserts are too tall.
So I got searching.. And I couldn't find anything. Did TN, or any other competitor like Wanderings, ever did a Great wave off Kanagawa Themed Notebook? I found some on Etsy, sure, but it looks like something that would've been done and overdone.
I kinda don't want to switch notebooks, but I prefer having one compatible with readily available inserts.
if anyone's curious, the size of the inserts are 18.5 x 10 cm (closed)
I'm kinda leaning into an A5, but I got told that they can get heavy. so "standard" TN size it is, but i'm open to try an A5 (I like A5 to draw)

What would you call this paper?

Post image
105 Upvotes

I've used this notebook for work since I started this job and we don't seem to have another with this paper laying around. What do you call this? It's like a lined grid with side and top/bottom margins. Kind of reminds me of a gradebook. Definitely not normal grid paper given the margins and thin lines between the grids

edit: thanks all who said French/Seyes ruled, you are right.

Advice needed Is there a way to “tighten” or “shrink” the spring on this spiral notebook?

Thumbnail
gallery
24 Upvotes

Hello, Im having a really hard time using this otherwise fine notebook due to the sheer size of the spring in the middle. I have tiny infant rat hands and some weird circulation issues where if I have to have my elbow raised, or have any part of my wrist pressing on something like over 5mm my hand will quickly start freezing (literally getting way too cold) and it can take up to two hours to get back to normal even using compression things. So the notebook is too tall to use folded and when its open the spiral gets in the way really badly.

Its clearly just wire, I would imagine one can do something to make the loops smaller, I have access to plenty of tooks, from cutters, to pipes to heat guns if its really necesary. I also font mind removing some pages if I have to.

Plz if any suggestion involves buying something, Id rather just get recomended another type of notebook that dosent have these issues, hopefully one without a strict page layout (ones that have a super specific purpose like a planner) and if its ok plz dont suggest amazon, thats not a thing where I live.

I use this notebook for any kind of writing I ever need to do for any reason so Im not sentimental about it and dont mind if it gets a little messed up if it still works.

Thank you

Review Was Moleskine paper ever good with fountain pens? - New vs Old

Was Moleskine ever good with fountain pens?

I recently got hold of a small sized 3-pack blank Moleskine notebook which seems to be the old stock with the seller.

And I also got Moleskine student cahier notebook which was released in 2025 as per Google search.

The difference is significant in my testing in the favor of old paper.

I am not sure if the same paper has been used or if the formulation changed for the worse, but that was intriguing for me to think if Moleskine ever had a good paper for fountain pens.

The old paper wasn't top notch but wasn't terrible either like I remember it from the past usage. It did bleed through a little but only through some spots. The feathering was much controlled, to the extent that I would call it more of a spread than feathering.

Pilot parallel pens and Speedball B-0 performed well in my opinion and the paper can certainly be used with pens with controlled ink flow.

What are your thoughts about this?

Advice needed Cat peed on the one diary I have ever used for an entire year

Thumbnail

Yeah, I want to cry. My cat has a UTI and has been peeing on random surfaces (she’s on medication now), but I didn’t think my planner would count as a surface. This is the Even Work Journal by Notem Studio with a linen-covered cardboard cover. I already destroyed it by washing the cover with soap and disinfectant and by spraying the whole thing with enzyme cleaner. I have now been advised to place it in a sealed container with activated charcoal once it is dry, but I doubt it will work because the pee was already semi-dry by the time I discovered it. This is the first planner I’ve ever used consistently because I finally found a format that worked for me - undated, with a page to a week or so - and I really, really don’t want to throw it away.

I’m not gross, so if I have no way of getting the pee out I’ll have to seal it in a ziplock bag for posterity and move onto a new one, but any tips to get the bacteria and odour out would be appreciated. :(
