The Downward Spiral I had a shirt long ago

I had a t-shirt long ago that I believe was from the self destruct tour, the shirt was white and had a red sigil along with the nin logo. If anyone could post a link to somewhere I can buy a new one, or at least images I would be most grateful

The Downward Spiral David Bowie comparing Nine Inch Nails to The Velvet Underground

Post image
1.1k Upvotes

"[...]When talking to Rolling Stone, Bowie thought that the entire appeal of the album was because of how much it didn’t feel like it should be listened to, saying,

'In making The Downward Spiral, he encouraged the computer to misconstrue input, willed it to spew out bloated, misshapen shards of sound that pierced and lacerated the listener. Second to The Velvet Underground, there has never been better soul-lashing in rock.'

If anything, Lou Reed’s brand of rock and roll may be the only other companion piece to this kind of record. After all, Reznor’s use of distortion wasn’t that different from how The Velvets used it on their album White Light/White Heat, and as far as the storyline goes, the album takes what Reed was getting at on an album like Berlin and took it even further by making it sound like one of the most intense experiences one can have while sitting completely still.

And just like any genre that struck his fancy, Bowie knew that he wanted to take a crack at it as well, eventually making Earthling as an ode to that style of music by making insane beat switches and allusions to drum and bass music. ā€˜The Heart’s Filthy Lesson’ was priming the pipes for this, but ā€˜I’m Afraid of Americans’ is clearly more in line with what Bowie was aiming for.

Reznor was looking to quote what he felt inside, which eventually led to him producing for Bowie and touring with him in the 1990s, where they played a version of ā€˜Hurt’ together.[...]"

How To Destroy Angels Composing HTDA style music

Hi, I write the music for my short films, and I'm trying to research what instruments should I explore to write music like How To Destroy Angels. Are there any specific instruments that would you recommend me to try? Thanks in advance

Thought Something great I've noticed about this community.

In most communities they have elitist's talking about how objectively 'this band is better than that band" and stuff but with our community everybody gets along with each other very well.

I'm not just posting this without context I'm a top poster on here and every single one of my posts have gotten very good feedback. Even when it was a shitty cover I did back then you guys encouraged me to keep going.

The community always shares deep-cut and more obscure things to help other people see it which is really cool. Giving a shotout to these actual legends, u/pyract of nindestruct.com and (I don't know his thing so sorry!) of nincatalog.com and even the live archive and people on youtube.

I think the Nine Inch Nails fanbase is pretty strong. There are assholes every now and then but the majority of you all are awesome. ā¤

If you don't agree just don't make a big deal about it, take this post to share a story or anything. Maybe even a memory.

šŸ—£ļø Discussion Anyone else exclusively use NIN to get through their work day?

I swear, my productivity at work is SHIT unless I have NIN blasting in my ears. Luckily I work from home otherwise people in an office would probably be able to hear and hate me for it haha.

Thought Tokyo 2014-02-28 - Peak electronic NIN & The Return of The Great Destroyer

BeforeĀ we had that beauty called Nine Inch Noize, if anyone ever asked me how a full-blown electronic Nine Inch Nails concert would sound,Ā a very specific concert in Tokyo of a dozen years ago was my immediate recommendation.

With the band fresh of reunion and the massive Tension tour setup with backup singers and extended musicians, Trent stripped everything back down to a mean four-piece live band composed ofĀ Trent, Robin, Alessandro and Ilan. Because it was right at the start of the tour leg (which would cover Australia with QOTSA, Europe, Latin America and USA with Soundgarden) they were actively experimenting with bits and pieces of live arrangements and with the setlist, leaning ridiculously hard into synths and electronic textures. Ilan was basicaly away from the drum-kit for at least half of the night.

What makes this setlist an absolute amazing is that 11 out of the 21 songsĀ were fromĀ Year ZeroĀ andĀ Hesitation Marks. I mean, look at this setlist (taken from ninlive.com):

ninlive.com

And of course, also noticeable, theĀ first performance ofĀ The Great DestroyerĀ since 2008 (with a false start) and Hand Covers Bruise (not in the set-list) going into Beside You In Time.

If you haven't heard this gig, go check it out on theĀ Nine Inch Nails Live Archive now (https://www.nin.live/artists/nin/concerts/2014-2-28-studio-coast).Ā There are some incredible IEM and audience recordings available there.

That's about it, wanted to share this with you. Do you have a favorite show from the 2014 cycle?

Thought I think Terrible Lie is incredibly romantic

I cannot be the only person who thinks this way! But maybe I am?

Am I the only one who thinks of terrible lie as a story about someone who has lost faith, and then finds themselves witnessing divinity? And reckoning with that? like kind of working through the anger and rage of wanting to believe in something again after you already went through the process of mourning it?

Or did I just miss the fucking whole point and honestly that’s okay too

Question My post got deleted and im not sure why :( I got a NIN CD and I had a question

I bought a used pretty hate machine CD and I noticed that inside the case there was a super low quality photo of a concert around 1994 (I think). I took it out and it’s glued inside the case. Is this something that someone printed out and put in the case or did this come with the original CD?

EDIT: I’m going to make another post with photos of the CD because I can’t tell if it’s fake

edit again: im returning the cd because it keeps skipping on a few songs

The Fragile Trent using a Virus B for the Fragile Production.

Stumbled upon this photo inside of the Fragile Vinyl Booklet. You can notice a lot of things in this photo. The Virus B and the Jim Rose Circus shirt he is wearing, and a depressed man in the background. I am a huge nine inch nails researcher but I can't seem to figure out who that is.

Note: Trent looks focused af.

I have FINALLY finished my latest piece!

Frustratingly this one has taken me three times as long as they normally take me due to issues with my disability but it’s finally finished now!

It’s a portrait of Trent Reznor in the January 2002 issue of Alternative Press magazine drawn in Prismacolor and Faber Castell pencils.

As always, prints are available via DM ā˜ŗļø

I decided last summer that I was going to undertake this project and it’s finally done (for now…)
Made with cotton dmc thread from my own patterns, 50x50 stitches each.
I might decide to do some of the other projects like Ghosts and some of the remix albums and singles. (The 5IN single cover is one of my favorites)
But for now, I’ll move on to another project I’ve been waiting to start.
