Dinosaurs are the ultimate proof of cosmic indifference.

It strikes me how dinosaurs reigned for 165 million years, yet there was no ultimate "reason" for it. In the grand timeline of the universe, their entire existence has been completely flattened. Does this not highlight the core of nihilism ? Existence happens, it scales to massive proportions, and then it vanishes as if it never occurred.

Existential Nihilism I give up

I gave up in "living". I never really lived my life, i didn't had family and friends. I'm empty. Never was loved, not even by my mom that is the only person by my side right now. But she doesn't care about my suffering. She pretends to care. I'm just waiting for my death, i will not kill myself, i'm such a coward to do that. I just like to fantasy about a life i never had and will never have. It's sad, but i know nothing can happen, like, literally nothing. I also giving up in my cats that are the only thing that i love and brings me joy. They will go for adoption soon. The good thing is that they don't really care about it like dogs so they will not suffer when i die. I just want you to know that if you have a loving family and loving parents you are SO lucky that you can't imagine. Go to therapy and really think if your life is worth living. Life doesn't have a purppose, so just have fun, even if it's not much. The only thing i wish is to never born in this world again, it's the only thing i want.

Pessimistic Nihilism Probably a tiring rethoric but I am tired

What are we doing? No, really, what are we doing? How are we taking everything so lightly and normal? It hits me every morning that we are all on the same planet doing only God knows what... Like I'm not suicidal but I give up on this whole illusion, but the more I do the less uninterested I am about everything. How do you even cope?

Optimistic Nihilism I think I finally get it now

• Upvotes

I am always going to be alone, no one gives a shit about me, I am to this realization today, and instead of mopeing around like a little bitch, I realized, if no one cares, if no one will ever like me, I need to find happiness and confidence within myself, after all, it's the only son of a bitch I'll ever have, because people are selfish assholes, and god, did I feel great today

Complete loss of meaning

So.. idk what’s this that m experiencing but I lost meaning in life, i know it shouldn’t have a meaning and I should make it by my own but THAT doesn’t interest me, doesn’t seem like itll make any change and if it did then what ? Im still me, stuck in this body and mind. All the things that I used to enjoy doing now make me feel absolutely nothing. As if they are just a waste of time, but what should I do in this time ? Nothing seems enjoyable, no one seems fun to keep around. I cut myself, hit my head to the wall, I thrash helplessly through my thoughts like someone bound in chains.. I try to meditate because I used to before and it used to make me feel better but now it makes me feel suffocated and I don’t even know why im doing it, I think sports are good but in the moment, I gotta run forever because my mind is empty while running but the moment I stop, everything becomes the same.

Why is nihilism so hated?

It's just a belief build on logic and science, I don't get why everyone hates on it.

Epistemological Nihilism "The Hard Problem of Consciousness" is often just epistemological nihilism for people who hate nihilism.

I say this because I saw a (admittedly singular that I'm milking to clown on substance dualists) meme mocking Daniel Dennet denying the hard problem of consciousness by pointing out neurology and the meme said "But Dennett the experiments come from the mind". Not only is this a genetic fallacy but this statement is not a matter of mind but of how we know things, and if it holds weight it's not limited to consciousness but the whole topic of learning and knowing. Unfortunately for substance dualists who tend to be either academic or religious, academic and religious philosophers hate nihilism. So of course they ignore the ramifications and pretend that this is a rebuttal of materialism instead of "epistemological realism" in lack of a better term.

Anyway can't wait to see this on r/badphilosphy where they complain about atheists call them religious when they use argumentd used to defend religion when defending the notion that consciousness is immaterial.

Greenwashing consumption

I see the next COP summit is near and it makes me wonder how many attendees are aware that consumption and conservation are opposing ideas that can not exist in harmony. Humans as a species think they are apart from nature, and disconnected from the shared fate. The unfortunate catch is as long as one human thinks they deserve more then nature apportions to them, the species will race to consume; and someone always thinks they deserve more.

Cosmic Nihilism The absence of meaning, why don't we stop there?

So, absurdism claims the universe is absurd for creating humans who desires meaning and in universe that doesn't give one.

I disagree. I think the idea that there is meaning is absurd, and that includes personal meaning. The universe appears to be a giant smattering of existence that just is, and does not own us meaning. Meaning is a fiction, one that can be harmful or helpful, but it is indeed a fiction.

Currency is an example I like to use. Look at the rules and adjustments we've made to the slips of paper we trade for goods and services. The "meaning" of it, and its aquisition have eclipsed some people's entire lives in pursuit of simply more money. Money that 6 generations of descendants couldn't spend.

To me, we, as people, seem desperate to fill what we perceive as a void, but really it just feels like ego. We WANT our lives to mean something, we think we need it. But they won't no matter how hard we try.

And people get so hung up on it!

There is no meaning, only preferences unique to the individual in their configuration. Now, as preference bearing beings, it would largely behoov us to cooperate and not get in each other's way except to prevent undue harm, but that's just strategy.

After all it's easier for me growing strawberries and my neighbor growing limes to just be friendly and neighborly if we want strawberry limeade. Way easier than steal his limes and trying to keep him from stealing my strawberries.

Discussion Leonardo, why so troubled?

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

An explanation to the quote I posted while feeling depressed. I suppose this is also my first ever Reddit post.

"Leonardo, why so troubled?”

I place meaning in every word of this quote.

To me, Leonardo Da Vinci represents one of humanity’s greatest minds: a painter, inventor, scientist, and thinker whose curiosity seemed to reach beyond the limits of his time. A man of extraordinary talent, ambition, and imagination, someone many of us could only dream of becoming. Yet, despite everything he was, he was very troubled.

And that makes me wonder: why?

Of course, Leonardo had his own struggles, as we all do. But I see something deeper in this question. If even a man so brilliant, so accomplished, and so full of potential could be troubled by his own existence, then what hope is there for the rest of us? Perhaps no amount of achievement, knowledge, or greatness can spare us from suffering. Perhaps we are simply creatures who will always find something to be troubled by, no matter how much we have.

And finally, the question mark. A simple symbol, yet it holds the very question that troubles me: Why? Why must we suffer? Why can we not simply exist without being burdened by the weight of existence itself?

Material nothingness and semantic nothingness

In the case of nihilism, the focus is on semantic nothingness. This makes sense. The existence of material nothingness is far more difficult than the existence of semantic nothingness.

According to our modern understanding of reality, the universe is composed not of small, solid marbles (particles), but of invisible quantum fields that permeate all of space.

Even if we were to remove all the matter and energy in the universe, these quantum fields would remain filled with constant energy fluctuations; for this reason, there is no such thing as absolute "nothingness" anywhere in the universe.

So, how certain are we that the universe we experience is real?

Given sufficient time and random atomic movements, a fully formed human brain (complete with its memory, recollections, and perceptions) could suddenly appear in the void of space.

This is called a Boltzmann brain.

If time has no end and spacetime continues to exist after all the stars have died and all the black holes have evaporated, then statistically, the probability of us being Boltzmann brains is higher than that of being ordinary humans.

In that case, how can you be certain that the universe you see around you right now, the text you are reading, and all your memories of the past are not actually momentary mental illusions?

As for the state of semantic nothingness, the most classic example is the question of whether life has meaning.

To do this, we must define two things: life and meaning.

What we call life is essentially an organism increasing the disorder (entropy) of its environment while keeping its own internal disorder (entropy) constant.

The death of an organism signifies a state in which it can no longer maintain its own level of disorder at a constant level.

So, what about meaning? Here, we have a very good candidate for the meaning of life: the second law of thermodynamics. In other words, the rule that entropy—that is, disorder—in the universe is constantly increasing. Living things—indeed, all of life—serve this purpose simply by the very act of living.

However, the laws of thermodynamics do not attribute a conscious "purpose" to nature. Therefore, the reason for life's existence is not an intention in the philosophical sense, but rather the result of physical probability and optimization driven by energy flow and chemical gradients.

Discussion Zen and Nihilism

Post image
40 Upvotes

Zen Buddhism is very similar to Nihilism. I thought I would share this with you.

The character above is "Mu", which directly translates to the word "nothing". Zen students are taught to contemplate this symbol during meditation, saying the word in their head as they exhale.

There is a fundamental difference in the meaning though. It is taught not as a single word, but two- No Thing. It is a denial of emptiness and nothing itself.

One of my favorite guys was Alan Watts, who explained it this way- paraphrasing

Nothingness isnt grisly or dark. Its more like the nothingness of space, which contains the whole universe.

This is how I look at the concept of nihilism. From a purely scientific view, empty space in between atoms is far greater in sheer volume than the objects themselves- and we continue to find smaller particles with interesting spaces in between them the closer we look. But the important part about the concept of nothing is that this nothingness is where all of this comes from.

"Mu" is really about how the nothingness is what connects everything together. Its like being in the same ocean together with everything else.

Feel free to tell me im wrong, love you all
