"rushing" is quite an exaggeration. More urgently than Daniels was, but they do not look like a line trying to hustle for one last play. The center is still sitting on his butt 5 yds behind the LOS until the 6 second mark.
They're kinda trying to line up again, but they're barely even getting the Giants out of their way. The RT looks like the only one that notices what's happening.

Daniels was insufferable in the postgame interview. Just smugly saying "I've/we've got to be better" without actually taking accountability for the level of fuckup was wild. You never would have known that was a QB that just cost his team a win. I too would be furious as a teammate.
67
u/BAHatesToFly Giants 1d ago
Yes, but what was the actual play call? If it was to spike it, then it's on Daniels. If it was something else, I'd place some blame on the coaching staff.
125
u/abris33 Broncos 1d ago
Quinn said the "sequencing" comes from him and he just has to get it in earlier. He was very weird about it though because I think he was trying to avoid throwing JD under the bus. I think the call was to throw it out of bounds or spike it since all he said is that he should have gotten the call in earlier.
72
u/tiptoptony 1d ago
Yeah, if you look at Jayden, it was definitely a quick read for an open guy, if not throw it out of bounds.

u/abris33 Broncos 1d ago
I think what happened is that Daniels thought the clock was stopped after the previous play for some reason. Then the call was to throw it to a reciever or throw it away but he figured he'd center the ball and had all that time to get up and spike it. Although that theory relies on Daniels not looking at the game clock at all over a 2 play sequence.

u/NeverSober1900 Packers 1d ago
It looked to me like they called a clearout play. WRs went deep to open up the TE to the flat. Plan was probably take the free 5 yards or airmail the throw to stop the clock.
Giants jumped the flat. I think this caused Daniels to panic and he instinctively tucked it instead of throwing it away. Then he kind of just screwed it all from there.
The reactions from everyone makes me think this is really on Daniels and no one wants to say it on the team. Just throw it over your guys head by a mile QBs do that every Sunday in this situation it's not some niche thing it's done by college guys all the time.
25
u/mrpyrotec89 Ravens 1d ago
also, they were super lazy getting the play off, makes me think that Daniels didnt realize how much time they burnt getting the play off.
Cuz with 55 seconds you should be able to get 2 plays off comfortably, even 3. But it took them over 30 seconds to get the play off.
53
u/DudeFilA Panthers 1d ago
Is it on Daniels? Ultimately yes. Should they even have bothered given the weather and the fact your kicker has drilled several already in a sudden death situation? I mean...I don't think so.

u/NeverSober1900 Packers 1d ago
Ya we can agree on that. Was Quinn being greedy? Probably.
Even with that said under no circumstances should it have ended the way it did and that's because of Daniels for some reason tucking the ball in a situation you can't

u/rando5star 1d ago
Yeah exactly. It was risky/unnecessary but the play was clearly to take the quick 5 yards if it's there or throw it out of bounds. Coaches even said as much. Daniels holds on to it and then gives himself up when he had time to throw it away. He panicked and wasn't aware of the situation
53
u/Florida__Man__ Buccaneers 1d ago
Part of being a QB is managing the game. If the play call is one read or throw it away and you run, that's not really on the staff.
6

Yeah I mean as much as it was a risky play by the coaches, QB has to be aware of the clock there. Coaches can't talk you through it mid play

Urgency was not going to save a play with him going down with 8 seconds left and receivers running routes upfield. If QB spike wasn’t the play call, it’s malpractice. If the play was a QB spike and he still took a sack or changed the play, it’s malpractice

u/Responsible-Onion860 Eagles 1d ago
I get having a play targeting the endzone called with how much time they had before the play, with the note that if it's not there, Daniels should just throw it into the stands. They had a good 30 seconds left, that's plenty of time if you don't do anything stupid.
For some reason, he did the stupidest thing possible by trying to scramble instead of throwing it away or spiking it.

I think so. This has got to be just something that Daniels' brain froze up on. It happens to people in high stress environments. Purely a rookie type error from a QB that we hoped was past these. Doesn’t make him bad, doesn’t mean coaching is bad, just sucks in the moment and you hope he learns from it.

It would have been refreshing if Daniels came right out and said "I messed up, it was a brain fart at the worst possible time. I apologize to the entire organization." We shouldn’t have even been in this game at the end. We were looking at a blowout at the start of the second half. I thought the writing was on the wall after the very first drive.
If it was a close one score game the whole way until we tied in the 4th I know I’d be miserable today with the tie. The fact that the Giants clawed their way to tie the game with that incredible second half from both sides of the ball down two scores and trailing the whole game before that gave plenty to take away from the game and be happy about.

To me it looks like it was a clearout play to try and gain 5 yards. WRs go deep to open it up for an out route underneath.
Plan is hit that and go out of bounds for the free 5 yards or the QB just airmails the throw to stop the clock if it's covered.
To me it looks like Giants read it well and Daniels chose to tuck it since he couldn't make the throw and for some reason he didn't want to throw it away.

Daniels made a terrible play. But they should have never been put in that position. They're taking their time, huddling, sending a guy in motion, ZERO URGENCY, bleeding the clock to give themselves to wiggle room, then Daniels makes a terrible play, and still NOBODY HAS ANY URGENCY and the game is over. The coach didn't make Daniels take a sack but there was obviously a team-wide confusion and lack of plan that never should have happened.
Want more yards when there's 50 seconds left? Run it up the middle on a quick snap, then spike it. Don't want more yards? Spike it. The fact that they are huddling like there's 8 minutes left in the 2nd quarter is the strangest thing to rewatch with all this.

With Brady would have hustled them to the line with a one word call, run a QB sneak for 3 more yards, spiked the ball with exactly the right amount of time to attempt a FG, and have the clock run out. If they had a TO he would have saved enough time in case the snap was botched. Coach wouldn't have to coach a thing.

In what world is the play call, either throw it out of bounds, or spike it? Wouldn’t looking for an open receiver negate the chance to then spike it if they aren’t open? That felt like strange wording from the coach, am I over thinking that?
Why is the play call two things? It should’ve been either, 100% SPIKE IT NOTHING ELSE. But that wasn’t the case, because the receivers ran routes. Even if you complete it, there’s a chance they accidentally get tackled in bounds. Not worth the risk.
The other option is if you’re thinking of centering it. Get to the line when there’s 30 seconds on the clock, center it then reset and spike it with 3 seconds left. Or even run it to the left, if a couple yards was that important to you.
I know a lot of people seem to be giving Daniels shit, but he should never have been put in that position to make any kind of blunder. The call should’ve been one of the two above scenarios and nothing else. Why add a choice or risk to this situation. And these coaches are being paid way too much to leave it up like that.

I mean we probably won’t because the answer is “at least one person seriously fucked up,” and teams aren’t going to throw anyone under the bus like that.
Judging by Daniels and Quinn’s reactions as it happened, I feel like it’s pretty easy to interpret that Daniels was supposed to throw the ball away if nothing was there and instead he tucked it and ran. Has to be a brain fart or something because he doesn’t even have a sense of urgency after going down until his teammates start rushing him.
Quinn on the sideline screaming and throwing his headset is definitely consistent with something like that. lol

I'm shocked at the number of people who were blaming the play call. We see that play call all the time, just run some outs to the sideline, if it's not there the QB yeets it out of bounds.
We've seen Rodgers, Stafford, Allen, etc do this 100s of times to burn clock.
How is it the offensive coordinators fault his QB is apparently a dumbass?

Why was there no urgency before the snap? Why was there no urgency after the play was over?
It seems like Quinn was fucking around trying to figure out what to do and Daniels doesn’t have enough experience or confidence to take control of the situation.

Check Daniels DraftKing account (sorta /s) but idk how you don't understand that the clock is running and there's only 20 seconds left. Coaches should drill that into the players.

My issue is why didn’t Jayden just tell the truth and own it?
His whole “from the top down” comment makes it seem like he was also blaming the coaches.
