It's kind of tragic, that isn't even a cop but they still have on average 2-6x the education time than the average US cop (2-15 weeks in the US)

EDIT: For those who don't know, average in the EU for cops is 3-5 years.

185

u/Beautiful_Hunt1095 1d ago

A US cop’s education is 2-15 weeks???

That is tough. Being a police officer is a very difficult job.

In Denmark it’s 3 years, and the admission process alone is quite difficult to get through

77

u/BuzzAllWin 1d ago

Not that tough if you just shoot anyone your scared of instead of doing proper policing

25

u/Beautiful_Hunt1095 1d ago

If you only learn to shoot, what are the options.

Need to have more tools in the toolbox.

9

u/SignificantPaper1760 1d ago

They don’t learn to shoot either, they’re collectively terrible shots.

Nah. I live near Philly and it's way more than that - and I know multiple people who went through the Philly police academy and thank God, they were rejected as officers.

7

u/Questioning-Zyxxel 22h ago

The admission process in the nordic countries is why we do not have videos of screaming traffic cops with ego issues ripping people out of cars or unloading their guns into cars.

Police is an occupation where it's critical to only accept mentally stable people. Not the school bullies that wants to grow their hunting grounds.

US has a policy to not employ smart cops. Not cops that questions bad rules.

US Cops Basic Training Average of 20 to 22 weeks (~630 to 833 hours)
Other Developed Countries 2 to 3 years (thousands of hours).
Says all how developed US is.

Look, all you need is a gun and a badge. How hard can it be?

Exaggerating of course, but there really is a massive cultural difference between Europe and America what comes to exactly how hard it's considered to be.

Not true at all, their eduction is only 160 hours.

21

u/TjababaRama 1d ago

Who's education is 160 hours? That's 4 weeks by the way.

Security Guard education in Sweden is three parts.

Foundation course part 1, 88 hours
Practical training 160 hours
Foundation course part 2, 49 hours

After this you can work as a security guard. It is about 7-8 Weeks.

That's just blatantly wrong. Typical US police academy training is 4-6 months (600 to 1000 hours) and then they spend another 3-4 months as a trainee riding with an experience officer in the field. Just stop with the stupid, incorrect info. And no, I'm not a fan of police officers in general... But I hate misinformation more.

6

u/SturerEmilDickerMax 1d ago

Still it is very, very low. That is why US police officers sucks.

2

u/godzilla1015 22h ago

That's still less than a fifth of the training they get in my country.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Repulsive_Guy_1234 19h ago

Average training amount in the US is 652 hours for police officers. Just very little above the 20 weeks that is legally required. If you compare that to 4000 hours in Germany, 5500 hous in Finnland or 10500 hours in Portugal you can see that US police is still very much underprepared and undertrained. And that is just the training, the biggest problem is the screening. The most countries without police violence problems those guys you get as police officers never even get close to a uniform, they fail mental and psycological tests way before they even go into training.

2

u/BigBlueEdge 11h ago

That may be. I never said otherwise. My response above was to correct the incorrect "2-15 weeks" information which was just completely wrong.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/Torkonodo 1d ago

What is this bullshit, it's not 2-15weeks, on average it's 3-6months in the academy, yeah it's not great but it ain't 2 weeks.

Swedes are usually pretty chill, but he overheard an American tourist saying IKEA meatball flavored lollipops are disgusting.

148

u/Mike_Fluff 1d ago

As a Swede I can attest we have 2 vibes;

1: "Don't ask don't tell, we're chill and I will keep my distance"

2: "Try it again and I will see you in The Hague."

76

u/Winjin 1d ago

People really forgot that Sweden used to be a bloody kingdom that was feared across most of Europe

Sweden and Denmark hold the official records of wars fought between two nations IIRC

35

u/Rage_101 1d ago

They largely made up the absolute elite warriors of the Byzantine Empire too. For over a century the Varangian Guard waspredominantly Swedish, and their battle axes were feared across the borders of the Eastern Roman Empire. They formed the private guard gor the emperor too.

14

u/Plenty-Knowledge-603 1d ago

Well, it kind of became a sport to declare war on the other...

Oh, and for a long time it was Denmark-Norway, btw, not just Denmark.

3

u/sometimesynot 1d ago

Wait! The Denmarks fought the Norwegish too??

4

u/SkrikOnanist 13h ago

The scandinavians fought with everyone; if nobody outside of the "family" wanna fight, then what do you do?

Thats right, you break your younger brothers nose and scream "Danskjävel!" to him

2

u/Proccito 9h ago

Heck, even Leif Eriksson decided to buy a boat so Greenland wouldn't feel left out.

2

u/Plenty-Knowledge-603 1d ago

Some of our greatest heroes are actually Norwegian.....

And no, I don't believe there has ever been a war between Denmark and Norway?

Unless you go back to when the kingdoms were initially formed...

2

u/The_Pastmaster 18h ago

IIRC, some parts of Poland still speak of The Swedish Tide.

Eh, it's great that it worked out here, but breaking up a fight like this is incredibly dangerous.

Acquaintance of mine did something similar where two people were fighting and he took down the guy who was almost certainly the aggressor/fight-starter. While he was pinning the guy to the ground he turned to say something to the other person and got slugged in the face right as he did so. Ended up hitting the concrete hard with a bad concussion.

Said acquaintance wasn't a security guard or anything, but just saying that looking at one example of it working can lead to some very dangerous ideas for how this should be handled.

2

u/Swedish-Potato-93 21h ago

Looks more like 2 junkies/drunkies. You're right he'd likely be far more cautious were they young strong men.

90

u/rampaged906 1d ago

I thought it was staged due to the way it was filmed, but the tackle and leg sweep seems pretty legit

160

u/AquaRegia 1d ago

It's non-staged, but from a TV show where camera teams follow the security guards.

87

u/Arkeolog 1d ago

”Tunnelbanan” (”The subway” in English).

It’s a show that shows what happens in the Stockholm subway system, mostly during the night shift. It follows security guards, the subway control center, police working with the subway employees and so on.

11

u/SitInCorner_Yo2 1d ago

Ok I’m curious, what is the most out there thing they expect to happen in subway systems in Sweden that warrant this show to be a thing to begin with? Do they just have a reputation for odd things happen late at night?

44

u/Kelly_HRperson 1d ago

warrant this show

Sweden simply has a lot of dull shows where nothing really notable happens. Just different professions' regular workdays

17

u/Gay-Space-Pirate 1d ago

Ngl sounds like a great watch for a few episodes. I always wonder what peoples' jobs entale!

4

u/SitInCorner_Yo2 22h ago

Yeah it’s would actually be very interesting and educational, kids often pick their future job based on understanding from their families and friends, introducing them to unfamiliar jobs would help.

6

u/SitInCorner_Yo2 1d ago

That…sounds very Swedish, like, unexpectedly made a lot of sense.

2

u/RevolutionPublic7557 17h ago

Tunnelbanan has some hitters though. A lot of fun drunk people being drunk, and of course, this superhero moment.

Of course there's a lot of tragedy as well, they get to see part of the underbelly of society, isn't all that fun.

2

u/Caspica 3h ago

"Macke, ring üklagaren!" is a certified classic, though.

15

u/Arkeolog 23h ago

I mean, it’s mostly a lot of drunk people being turned away from the subway (you’re not allowed to use it if you’re too drunk because of the risk of falling down on the tracks), medical emergencies, rowdy people like the ones in the clip, and stuff like animals getting onto the tracks and needing to be removed. It’s low stakes but fairly entertaining.

14

u/dryelbow 22h ago

Well, the show did give us the legend of Macke's friend which might be one of the funniest things ever shown on Swedish television.

3

u/SitInCorner_Yo2 22h ago

Wait,what Macke did ??

12

u/xfactotumx 21h ago

Macke's friend didn't do a god damned thing and that's the problem. He was supposed to call the prosecutor to help his friend who was being held down by security guards...but from all accounts, he didn't!

It's a clip of a tremendously drunk guy being held down buy security yelling to his friend Macke: "Macke, call the prosecutor!!"

In my 13 years I worked there I've broken up multiple fights, stabbings, robberies, SA, helped deliver a baby (not connected to the SA), stopped suicides, taken care of people that had a little to much to drink, OD's etc etc

5

u/MollyViper 22h ago

It mostly just shows a lot of fights between drunks or overly drunk/high people in custody.

3

u/SpecialistCut7101 1d ago

It’s impressive that he didn’t even choose to use it

12

u/ImaginaryCheetah 1d ago edited 1d ago

yes, and, batons are a pretty serious escalation against two drunks slogging it out.

years back i remember a metro patrol stopping a drunk guy who was harassing folks in a station, and after some serious argument and two swings from the drunk the cop punched him once in the face. the drunk got a lot less belligerent after that, and that was the end of the violence... the cop helped up him to his feet and they walked off to presumably a stay in the drunk tank.

i was fully expecting it to be a terrible pummeling for the drunk guy having made the swings, but nope, nothing personal, just enough force to stop the drunk guy from throwing hands.

3

u/Fuckkoff- 20h ago

As it should be.

4

"Proportionality - The violence employed need to be in proportion to the situation at hand." <-- Core principle in the swedish law the security guard is operating within, and is trained to act through.
