Related to the protests, or school shooter?

If you read the article it states this incident is believed to not be related to the protests.

The authorities in question overwhelmingly vote and back Le Pen, it woould in fact be in their interest to do the opposite.

If that's your narrative it's pretty weird that already said they don't believe it is related.

Attal loosely said something about putting teachers and young people against each other framing it in terms of the protests.

Because it's reality.

The protests come from high schools, the middle schoolers are not protesting.

The death of a teacher. If you had read the article you would know no one is dead.

Of course they would.

They try everything to discredit the movement, and to blame the violence on the students and not the cops.

Kid was being bullied apparently, nothing to do with the protests. Also he's in middle school, most of the protests come from high school conditions (even though the whole education system is kind of a shitshow right now)

unless this isn't unheard of in France, I would say it's indirectly related to the protests. it wasnt the motivation, but seeing the protests on social media may have been influential to this kid.

Two teaching staff were shot and wounded by a 14-year-old boy armed with a hunting rifle at a school in Aubagne near Marseille Monday morning, French Education Minister ‌Édouard Geffray said.

Authorities said the teenager's father had been taken into custody and that there did not seem to be any link to the student protests that have swept across the country in recent weeks.

From the look of it, it is a local case of mental health and/or bullying issue.

So a hunting riflemakes some kind of difference. Different bullets, or what? How and why is it Different.

A 14-year-old boy opened fire with a hunting rifle at a middle school in France on Monday, injuring the headmaster and a teacher before being disarmed by a member of staff, local authorities said.

"The suspect, for reasons as yet unknown, fired at the headteacher, who was hit by a shower of pellets in the thighs and lower back," said Jacques Witkowski, prefect of the wider Bouches-du-Rhône region.

He then fired at a second teacher, who was hit by buckshot in the thigh before a member of staff disarmed him, he said

In US terms, it's a hunting shotgun with buckshot ammo.

In french, they call this a "fusil de chasse" ('hunting rifle' literally), as opposed to a police or sport-shooting shotgun.

Most hunting firearms in France are single or 2-shots shotguns, using buckshot ammo.

Semi-auto and pump actions are authorized with hunting licences, but with limitations:

  • can't be a detachable magazine.

  • depending on the caliber, it can house from 11, 5 to 3 shots maximum.

They're also quite expensive so most hunters just go with the cheaper option.

IMO hunting rifle carries the implication of a bolt action and full sized cartridge. Compared to an assault weapon or carbine which is typically semi automatic and a smaller intermediate cartridge

At least that’s how I understand the terminology

The article shows it's not even a rifle but a shotgun.

so its just a horrible headline. lmao

It's a translation issue, the french word for it translates directly to hunting rifle.

French people on average only now the main categories (gun, rifle, automatic rifle, and maybe Uzi). So a French article wouldn’t go much further into the details.

Also shotgun is usually cold “fusil à pompe” (bolt action rifle, I think, or maybe “fusil à canon scié”). So “fusil à pompe de chasse” becomes quite a mouthful. Either way it’s all “types of rifles” to us.

Ah yes, the main categories.

That's alright. Even in the US, a decent percentage of the laypeople share that same hallucination that "uzi" is a category.

It goes with my point though: maybe the average American has a lot more knowledge about guns and would expect more accurate vocab, but French people usually wouldn’t care or understand.

In fairness, gun vocab is an inconsistent mess in most / all cultures and languages. The more you learn the less it makes sense.

An Uzi is a very specific gun from Israel, but what category does it fall into? I can think of like ten different answers to that question, because the categories are fundamentally broken.

If the categories are broken, then I can't blame people for just picking a catchy name like Uzi. It gets the message across: a compact bullet hose.

The funny thing is, Uzi was the nickname of the gun's inventor, who specifically requested that the gun wouldn't share his nickname. His superiors denied the request, the gun was officially named Uzi, and now tens of thousands of other completely unrelated guns are also named after him 😂.

Welcome to other languages using different words for different things, the translation is genuinely just "Hunting Rifle" when translated from French.

I'd agree about the implication of "hunting rifle", but "Assault weapon" is not a term with any real meaning.

A Beretta Bobcat (.22lr pocket pistol) is considered an "Assault Weapon" in my state because it has a threaded barrel. Additionally some handguns used by shooters in the Olympics are "AW" in my state because the magazine is not located in the grip. Other states have similar goofy definitions.

"Assault rifle" is a real category with specific characteristics including select fire, "Assault weapon" is broad to the point of having no meaning outside of legislation.

Lol no one read the article?

Translation errors or something weird, because he was shooting something with pellets- normally we’d call that a shotgun, not a “hunting rifle”.

5

u/sebjapon 5h ago

It’s a hunting shotgun. But in French all shotguns are subtypes of rifles, and most people don’t really know or care of the difference.

7

u/Cautious-Football834 11h ago

Not really in the grand scheme of things. A rifle is a rifle. Hunting rifles usually use larger bullets and tend to be bolt action though, meaning you have to manually eject the spent bullet after every shot. Typically hunting rifles are used at longer ranges as well.

I imagine they brought it up because its France, and gun ownership isnt the same as in other places.

7

u/grifkiller64 13h ago

The first word in the headline is "French" so calm your tits.

2

u/Youre_worthless_to_e 13h ago

I think they were just specifying the weapon used to shoot them since the first thing said is the 14 year old was arrested. Then they explain why, and with what?

u/No_Gas4560 11h ago

in America shooters have a wider selection of tools and better access to practice, which result in a higher k/d ratio
