The San Juan de Fuca fault line runs under the ocean roughly parallel hundreds of miles from coastline between and including Vancouver Island Canada to Northern California. Experts are saying there’s a 40% chance of a large quake within the next 50 years. That could be any day, it could be 150 years from now or longer. If it hits off Northern Cali, Seattle won’t be hit nearly as hard as it would if quake hit off the WA coast. There’s about 800 miles between.

That's cascadia and it ain't little. If the whole thing goes it's gonna be away worse than that.

No. That isn't how plate tectonics work. There is no such thing as "due." There is an average amount of time between major seismic events, that's it. What causes megathrust quakes is dependant on a large number of variables and at the moment the tension we see in the Juan de Fuca/North American/Pacific plates isn't anywhere near high enough to cause even a +7.0 quake with anything resembling certainty within the next 50 years.

I don't necessarily blame you, news items about geology are often written for engagement reasons instead of scientific reasons. But the Cascadia Subduction Zone is not this ticking time bomb that is ready to turn the PNW into a salt marsh in the next few weeks.

That is absolutely not how plate tectonics work. Please go read up on the subject.

That… isn’t it at all.

USGS data on the main quake

USGS data on the main aftershock

USGS data on the third largest aftershock

This was a very serious series of quakes, the fact that no one seems to have died is a serious miracle.

No deaths? Oh wow, that is good news to read.

Just one dog in the Playa Venao area fairly close to the epicenter.

It is surprising that the US decided to pledge $5 million in aid. I half expected sanctions against Panama for having a quake that could have damaged the America Canal.

I'm still furious at the stupid muskrat for dogeing the federal program which was a main vehicle for stopping New World screwworm from advancing back up north.

Hard not to see these creeping north as they slowly trigger each other. Not a science based observation just anecdotal but it makes me worry about the is west coast.

West Coast and Tokyo are basically lit fuses at this point

Imagine the impact if a quake disabled the canal.

And yet I didn’t happened.

I think we're all glad you didn't happen.

A vehicle lies crushed beneath a collapsed building after an earthquake struck Penonome, Panama, on Friday.

Off topic, but what make and model is that truck holding up the building? It doesn't look crushed, just inconvenienced by the load.
