Pattern Need help measuring pattern

Hi all! I'm hoping to get some help with a pattern I'm making for a tall and thin waxed canvas sling bag that I'll be hand sewing.

Right now, I'm in the process of determining dimensions for the pattern, and I've got the following information that I'd like to share here to get feedback from the masters and journeypeople who may be here. Please let me know if this is appropriate for the community!!

Materials:

\--1/2 yard of 14oz waxed canvas for outer material

\--1/2 yard of 8oz cotton canvas for inner liner

\--one zipper on top, short edge.

\--stabilizing straps (one for around shoulder, another to lock it in place around waist)

\--4mm pricking irons

\--.65mm waxed linen thread with backstitching as primary stitch.

First, the use case:

I've got 11cm x 20cm x 8cm deep worth of objects to pack into the bag (extremely snug measurements here, to minimize bag space).

If my assumptions are correct for height, I need to add about 2cm for zipper clearance, then another 1cm or so for canvas folding space, then another 1.0-1.2cm for seam allowances on top and bottom.

Final height: 25-25.4cm.

For 11cm width, I'd like .5cm clearance on either side of the zipper mouth, so that means we add 1cm for that, + 1-1.2cm for seam allowance.

Final width: 14-14.4cm

For the 8cm depth objects, I'd like 1cm of clearance, and then we add about 1cm for canvas bulk + 1-1.2cm for seam allowance.

Final depth: 12-12.4cm

Total dimensions including 1cm seam allowances:

25cm x 14cm x 12 cm

(Adding .4cm for 1.2cm seam allowances)

This is my first attempt at a bag like this, so I'd appreciate any help in understanding the pattern and how I can adjust for this going forward.

As stated, my goal is to snugly pack those objects into the bag without it being overly bulky. I know canvas is a thick material that holds shape well, and I'm going for both longevity and waterproofing here. I want it to be as small as possible, in a streamlined rectangular prism, without making it too hard to get the items in and out of the top zipper area. I'd like the depth to be as snug as can be so it's got a more flatline look, but not bulky when packed.

Thank you all so much for reading. Please let me know if you need any more information or if my assumptions are way off the mark. Will the bag be too big? Too small? I'm curious to hear what you all think!

Pattern Frame bag

This is my first (and hopefully only) attempt at a frame bag, for a ride in six months. According to my references, most are one piece, in my case I divided it to have two individual pieces that I can put on and take off as needed. I also added eyelets to attach it to the bicycle frame, which I can remove to use as tent straps.

P.S.: Apologies in advance for the second image; I finished sewing at sunset and took a quick photo to see how it looked.

Pattern New fly fishing packs and some beginner content

Hey everyone,

I've been busy toiling away this winter on a few things and am stoked to have a new pattern available for what I call the Fast Fly Twin Zip Mini Pack. More storage than my simple Fast Fly pack with some added featured borrowed from my Truckee Chest pack. I hope some MYOGers take a liking to it.

I also started a YouTube channel with some beginner-friendly tutorials. I have a video and accompanying free pattern and instruction set for a simple zipper pouch that I tried to make as simple and fun as possible. Maybe any lurkers here who haven't dived into MYOG quite yet will find it useful and a good starting point. Check it out at https://myogangler.com/simple-zipper-pouch/

Working now on a new pack that can be worn as a wader work station, suspended off of backpack straps, or worn as a sling pack. the prototype turned out great and I'll be doing another one and hopefuly have a video tutorial for it when it comes out.

Hope to have more to report soon. Thanks to everyone for the continued inspiration, this sub is awesome.

I figured I would share the camera Pod patterns I put together for myself. Right now I haven't put together any instructions for them, but you should be able to put together the pattern with some basic sewing knowledge. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Pattern: https://drive.google.com/file/d/16vFJq7gT5XmcVXOqrJSq2ge7qIcavJNy/view?usp=drivesdk

If I write up instructions, I'll put this pattern on my site.

I really love this type of bag and have always wanted one, but they aren't sold in my city, so I'm looking for a pattern or tutorial that explains how to make one. Thanks!

Pattern Aero jacket - rough cut pattern

Not sure if I’ve made a mistake or just being dense.

I purchased and the aero jacket pdfs and figured I’d print out the A4 pattern to put together myself.

(I didn’t realise it was over 100 pages but that’s beside the point)

I printed out the relevant pages at the right scale but the frame lines don’t align.

The first page seems to have a second frame line which makes the surrounding pages work but no other page has that frame line.

Can anyone tell me what’s gone wrong? I’d rather not have to throw all this paper into the recycling bin!

I’ve had a Hilleberg (tents) fabric offcuts pack lying around for a long time, so used some of the inner tent fabric. I think it’s probably their yellow label inner tent fabric, 10D ripstop nylon with DWR, 20 g/m2 (0.6oz). Pretty thin anyway.

Modifications to the pattern:

  • Quarter zip. So I could use #2.5 zipper by the yard I had already.
  • No pockets. Cut the front and front gussets pieces as one.
  • Larger hood as I usually hike in a cap. Left the neck line the same but expanded the hood side pieces by an inch and elongated the hood gusset.
  • Pull cord channel on the bottom hem, winged that part as I went. So didn’t need the front and back hem facing.

Size 44 in the pattern. I’m 181 cm (5’ 11”) and 95 kg (209 lbs), relatively broad shoulders and some excess around the belly :)

I don’t have a serger, so just a regular sewing machine with straight and overcast stitching.

I would say moderately difficult project. I’ve worked with thin slippery fabric before, which is part of the challenge. The instructions are good.

If I was making it again I’d make it a bit longer in the body. I think the puckering of the seams from my overcast stitch shortened it. Adding my own extra pull cord channel sorted that. I’d also make the hood pocket B piece longer (maybe half the length of the hood pocket A) - this folds over the hood pocket to keep the jacket inside but with such thin slipper fabrics it wants to pop out. Or add a kam snap.

Also I don’t know a good way to finish the bottom of a quarter zip neatly with such thin fabrics that don’t fold properly. I used the same method as all YouTube videos show with cutting a little fork (inverted Y) at the end, but it still wasn’t neat. Probably some interfacing would help. In the end I bar tacked along the bottom to hide the mess a bit. Maybe it would be better to make a horizontal seam an even add in a horizontal zipper below for a chest pocket. Better for hiking with a rucksack and hipbelt than hand pockets.

Been testing it on my journey to work. Little bit of wind and some very light rain today and seems to work great.

This weekend I spent a lot of time starting to learn Affinity Designer and then digitizing one of my cardboard patterns. This morning I tested the pattern out in it's most basic form and it came out well. I would love it if more people tested it out! I am including some basic text instructions that (I hope) anyone with basic bag construction experience can follow and the pattern that can be printed out on US Letter paper.

Pattern Looking for raglan sleeve pattern, Melly knockoff

Ok so to be clear I don’t like Melanzana’s and think they’re extremely overpriced for a shitty quality fleece. But my husband has one and LOVES it. So id like to make another, as close to the original as possible. My attempts at tracing it have gone horribly wrong, so I’d rather use a legit pattern. Any suggestions?

I’m leaning toward The Green Pepper Fairbanks Anorak or Coast Range Anorak, but wanted to see if there were any newer patterns available. I searched this sub and found a bunch of posts from 6-7 years ago, but nothing more recent. Is the Fairbanks better than the Coast Range for a basic fleece?

I have a newborn and not a ton of time for improvisation, so a printed/pdf pattern that I can just follow along is ideal for my sleep deprived brain. Thanks for your suggestions!

Pattern Best sewing pattern suitable for a raglan sleeve quarter zip base-layer and/or mid-layer.

I’m looking for recommendations for a men’s sewing pattern suitable for making both a base layer and a midlayer with:

Raglan sleeves
Quarter zip for dumping heat
Thumb loops or thumbholes—although I can add these myself
Athletic/outdoor fit
No pockets

Planned fabrics:
Base layer: approximately 150 gsm merino
Midlayer: Polartec grid fleece

Ideally, someone has already developed a suitable pattern that can be adapted to both fabrics. I’m hoping to avoid drafting one from scratch or combining two separate patterns.
Has anyone made something similar or found a pattern they would recommend?

Pattern Making a Packable Shopping Tote Bag -- 1.4 oz in Silpoly

Hey MYOG Gang.
I made another pattern and tutorial. This time for a classic packable tote bag. I got a couple packable totes at Outdoor Retailer years ago and just loved using them. Grocery shopping, farmer's market, bringing extra stuff to the beach, international travel... you name it. I took those everywhere. They pack down to nothing and just work.
So I made a pattern for everyone to enjoy. By far one of the most beginner friendly patterns out there. And even has the option to add Neodymium magnets for the closure since it uses the whispy ultralight fabrics.

You can use pretty much whatever fabric you want, but I recommend something UL and under 2 oz per yd to keep it packable. The one I make in the video is using Silpoly and the 1.4 oz weight is insane. Did another one in HyperD 1.0 Uncalendared and that was 1.1 oz.

You can find the pattern here: https://redpawpacks.com/product/packable-tote-shopping-bag-myog-tutorial-and-pattern/

Let me know what patterns you want to see next!

Pattern Tried the 3D printed patterns as well, experimenting with material/weight savings

Thumbnail

Instead of the default print settings, I removed the top and bottom layer and strengthened the outer perimeter (3 instead 2 walls). The material savings are only 15% (176g vs 207g), it may be possible to reduce the infill further but I have not attempted it yet. Seeing the material through is a positive for me.

The text looks bad because it had no proper surface to be adhered too but good enough for me so far.

The larger pieces I just divided them in two in the slicer using the default "dovetail" settings amd they seem to work well. It's a tight fit.

If you have suggestions or tips let me know :)

Pattern Photography EDC pouch

Hello! I am looking for a photography EDC pouch to carry with my camera. Something to hold SD cards, extra batteries, chargers, etc. The closest thing I can find as a pattern is the MYOG tech pouch. Has anyone used this for photography and love it or have any other recommendations?

Pattern 2-3 pattern testers wanted!

Post image
26 Upvotes

I am looking for 2-3 people who would be interested in testing out a pattern for me. As a pattern tester you will get a large format file and a sewing guide. I am hoping to get feedback on the pattern itself and the written guide. It all works for me, but it's hard to tell if it will work for everyone without having others test it.

Right now the pattern is not set up for letter or A4 printing. It is set up for either projector sewing or printing on a large format printer.

If you are interested in testing out this pattern, please send me a chat or an email at goss.handmade@gmail.com. Please include a picture of the last project that you completed.

Ideally I would like to have feedback on the pattern, fairly quickly.

Thanks!!!
