First real project - throw bags

First real project using cool fabrics from RTBTR. Took inspiration from the Sockdolager throw bag for the shape and then made it a little more beginner-friendly to make. Has 70ft of polypro rope in it. Gave the two white ones to my packrafting buddies and kept the yellow.
2nd project was the learnmyog tech pouch. Want to get into making backpacks but a little hesitant with my Singer HD.
Thanks for all the great inspo posts in this sub - I’m loving the MYOG community 🤘

Nice!! Make sure to tighten up those end loops. Loops should only be big enough to fit a carabiner or two, nothing more.

Also adding some closed cell foam will help them float instead of turning into anchors.

I’ve been using a borrowed Salamander from a friend that has some foam in it and have been thinking of the best way to integrate it in this one. Shouldn’t be too hard to stuff some at the bottom as there’s still plenty of room for the Velcro to work. Copy that on the loop, thanks 👍

Man these look great, especially for a first project. I’d make a few more smaller bags and test any features or designs you have for the pack, but looks like you’re about ready for a backpack. I’ve made a few and once you make one zippered bag, they all kinda go together the same.

Take 8-10 or so layers of scrap material you plan to sew for the pack and run some test stitches, throw some webbing in the sandwich and if you can sew all that, your machine should be good to go for a pack.

That’s really great advice! I think what I noticed on some of the thicker parts of this project was the material didn’t feed well. Seeing how thick some shoulder straps and hip belts can get is what gives me pause.
I’ll definitely do some tests first!

How far can you throw them?

Only tested a few throws in my back yard which is around 50 ft but seems like I could get it the full 70 with a good toss. The rope releases really well.

nice looking bags. loops in the rope at either end are a BIG safety hazard. if you can fit a hand through the loop, it is way too big. loops should fit a carabiner, not a hand.

Thanks for the tips. I’ve tightened them up since taking this photo but will double check before we use.

Nice work, especially with a more advanced pattern and stiffer fabric.

Awesome! I need to do the same thing except permanent flip lines for the rafts

Is that ecopak (shiny side) wrong-side out?
Only asking because I made lil zip bag out of the lemon line eplx shiny side out and wondered if I was "supposed" to have the matte side on the exterior. ...Or if it even matters?

That’s a good question! I assumed the shiny side was the right side but I’m not sure?

Nice work where’d you snag the rope? Was thinking of making some of these. Re: singer HD… I started there as well and there are many upgrades in your future 😂
