Back with helmet pocket?
Anyone know of a pattern for a backpack that has a pocket for a ski helmet? Or has anyone ever made one?
I’ve been trying to think it through and looking at bags for ski touring or boot bags, and I can’t seem to figure it out.
I want to make a backpack to hold all my ski stuff, including boots, to make packing for the mountain easier.
EDIT: I do want the helmet to be *inside* the bag, not outside only with a mesh pocket. It’s not for climbing the skin track, it’s for throwing in the back of my car or wearing on the shuttle to the ski hill.

Helmet is going to be easier than the boots. Look at how people pack crampons and snow shovels.
Sew some 3-bar buckles into / onto the pack low down, make a patch that has short straps that will fit the buckles, shape the flap with large darts to suit the curve of the head protection and then add some straps on the sides and top that attach somehow to the sides and top of your pack. I pack my helmet in my oversized boot bag but it will fit into the top of my big rucksack easily.
My pack is however a 90 litre Expedition pack not a small day pack
What won't fit in my backpack are my size 13 plastic boots

Lots of bags have options for a stretchy mesh pocket; would that work? https://myogtutorials.com/32-litre-frameless-ultralight-backpack/
My mtb backpack has more of an open pocket with straps so I can shove my helmet in there and cinch it down. However, I can't find anything similar in current stores, so maybe it's out of fashion.

I was thinking of that, but I feel like the helmet will get all full of snow…

Attach it like that except rather than mesh, make a pocket that is sized for your helmet out of your favorite material. You can get fancy with darts but I would essentially make something like a half cylinder which will be much easier. Put a center zipper on it. Then sew the whole pocket on. You can sew the bottom and side seams like the mesh pocket, but in order to sew the top seam, you need to make the long front panel into two panels.

So what kind of pocket are you envisioning? Do you have an example of a storebought pack?

I have a boot bag that has a pocket for the helmet on top, but it’s kind of just a zip with a ambiguous pouch made out of the lining material, and you kinda have to wrangle it so it fits when your boots are in there. Not ideal… I want to make something similar to this: https://diamantgear.com/products/weekend-warrior?_su_rec=w_dBM5p6wuRQD4MRHBRJerFxMgbFwzqR-1EwegS7yISL_RRmpLUwUEKnMX5roy1IlsWRuvVAQ7UY60QgVD76pgxo3uVp6n-VkHnPA8Wt3RqsFUuc6KJDndwDzik7fQ35A66ysVhMapvFcH07TbhoNXYsMnKKWi2Rg8Upr05KsmseV2XQPSfMTfXWXqR2pAbUmV0u5UdXawV-3JJFivThnz5goqmkoRWTt16ggdsRaGP_kaH37SqvGX7Ltg_R5BrQECOU3PHifsReGCx-s6RIEP-c2VF6tWRVBCJkmsUKgo0_JgpocsM4H6rnuDUCYKJsowoLjcis2EtXFanWY6sgWPAE3NGm1mKYTCGx8OcnvDM6dJETj9If4y1jGeRPQF42EMmASLlMEDLBBDtYdrXXccmZU0M&_su_rec_id=3e2484a9-7b1f-4cc9-ad78-4d34e5442f28-1791759644 but with the helmet inside

I just made a drawstring bag that fit my helmet, and added molle straps to the back to attach it to my bag (paddle carrier in this use case), and big loops on front to clip or attach other stuff to it. Works well for me.
See Imgur link below for pics (the black bag on top of the back rack with the red drawstring, helmet is in there with the GoPro attached).

You can’t really fit boots and a helmet in a normal backpack. Boot bags are big duffle things with a boot pocket on either end and a double-zippered center part (like, with a panel down the center so the opening is wide).
If using a backpack, I personally would normally attach the boots to each other via the top Velcro straps, put the backpack on, and then toss the boots over the top so one hangs on each side. Helmet could go inside or could dangle off the top handle of the pack.

For me the most space efficient way to pack a helmet is at the very top inside the pack. It's nice and accessible after the approach too. Strapping through daisy chains also works really well.
Boots are harder. I find a large front pocket to be the most secure. Ideally something that can be compressed or closed shut.
