Where can i get some of this made relatively cheaply?

Post image

I have already found somewhere i can get 0.5 yards of it for about £17, and a yard for £32, but is there anywhere i could maybe get it made cheaper? I would be getting it in cotton or a poly cotton or even wool. are there any manufacturers that can make a custom tartan like this or is it worth just getting the fabric from the places i have found?

Well, finding a place really depends on the type of material you’re looking for. There’s several mills that only work with wools for scarfs, others making twills for kilts. Also would help if you share which tartan this is. The more common ones are far easier to find.

That's not a tartan. It's not the same pattern in the warps and wefts. Compare just the thin lines of bright blue.

I’m not sure what you mean by that?

I found it, it’s called “Evans / Bevan”. I didn’t recognise it because it’s Welsh, but there are a ridiculous amount of tartans these days: https://welsh-tartan.com/tartans/evans-bevan/

Scottish tartans only list 1 set of thread counts because they repeat horizontally and vertically. I don't see why the Welsh wouldn't keep the same rules since they have no historical tartan tradition... As such I maintain that it isn't a tartan just because someone slapped the writing label on it

Its a welsh evans tartan like shortymcsteve said, made in the 90s.

Like I said, they can write the word "tartan" beside it, but it's not a tartan. Just like a label wouldn't make me a Duck. Don't misunderstand me. It's cool if the extended Evans family has a shared sense of pride and belonging. And It's fine that in the 90s they decided they wanted shared colors. What they plotted out isn't a tartan, and that's fine because they have no reason to have a tartan because they have no cultural ties to tartans.

It's a squares-vs-rectangles type situation. Every tartan is a crisscrossing woven pattern, but not every crisscrossing woven pattern is a tartan.

There's several custom fabric printing places that might beat those prices (Contrado, etc), but printed plaid isn't nearly as nice as a woven plaid.

I just randomly googled "custom fabric woven for kilts" and it looks like $350 for 10 yards of acrylic: Custom Designed Tartan Cloth, Woven to Your Sett

Here's another custom weave place: Weft | Custom Woven Textiles

Here's a Scotland shop that does custom weaves, but they are pricey even before that: Tartan Design Service | ScotlandShop

Conceivably might find something cheaper in the UK which presumably has more small fabric mills around, but manufacturers/mills tend to set a pretty high minimum order to go to the trouble of doing a custom setup on their looms. Or charge a lot for the trouble of dealing with small quantities and end-consumers.
