Question How do i stop my top tube "bag" from sliding?
Ive added some fabric from a tote bag on the bottom to hopefully add some grip. I tried shoe lace and it immediately slipped, tried my high school necktie but it still slipped, peobably because i only have one necktie. Eventually i used the handle from a black tote bag since it looked better than a dang necktie and a pink shoe lace🥀 (its still sliding).

This must be the most low effort top tube bag in this sub - and I love it!

Well i wouldnt wanna spend much money on a bag for an old bmx. Im saving to get a good used bike, then i could go nuts on diy gears.

I totally get that. And my comment really wasn’t meant to be sarcastic. I really think this is a funny solution, and if it works, why change it?

This seems to work, but it still slides a bit after going through the rough roads in my neighborhood. Im gonna get my dad to tie it better, since im very unskilled at doing simple knots and ties

You shouldn’t try to fasten it with a knot, because without a knot that’s specialised for fastening a cord or something similar, it will never be tight enough to keep it in place. The only way I could imagine a construction like this to hold, would be if you wrap something that’s not slippery around the tube that’s also a little bit compressible and then tie it. Instead of that webbing you’re using, a cheap solution also might be cable ties

I already take it from my mom's to my dad's house, and back again (roughly 6km). Its holding up really well after i got my dad to tie it very tightly.

You need a loop to your handlebar and seat stem.

I tried tying it to the head tube but it gets pushed around by the stem when the handlebar is turned

Which is why you need to tie it to both ends. If you pass a cord through the narrow space, then pass each end around the front, crisscross them, then go down the opposite side of the box (one half of this path is shown here https://imgur.com/a/2O5KDDJ if that link works), you can just continue on down to the back of the box. Cross the two over again behind the box before tying around the seat post. That way it won’t be able to go either forward or back

This is working quite well. I just wrap the tube with some foam and its quite snug. Oh and i just realized this is a little wide and tall, as its sometimes touch my thigh. But only when i tried moving my thigh inwards, which dont happen even when sprinting

Nice! Though I’m cringing at riding in open-toed shoes….

Its a sandal and thats normal in asian countries, specifically south east Asian. Shoes are for the serious and people that wanna look stylish, I dont or rather dont understand how to style.
i dont have the money to get sports shoes. All i have is a 3 year old high school shoes that i use for college, and i dont really feel like using it to play outside.

Hey, I’m not saying my way is right, just that the idea of ramming my bare toes into a bike pedal if I miss putting my foot on it makes me cringe!

I can always get a sandal with a larger sole. A flip flop with the V where the toes grip in, is not ideal for anything other than just a walk. The toes are more exposed since it has flat sole, where mine is a bit flared up and out. Flip flops are also looser and have more potential to snap and be unusable.

Whatever works! I personally wear a pair of sneakers I’ve had for over a decade when I ride my bike. Enclosed toes for me 😂

I dunno how serious you are, but if you're actually using this, consider attaching it as a bike basket instead. You've got that nice cross bar on the handlebar to strap it to, and the shape of the bar will support it well

I tried making handlebar bag with cardboard inside a totebag. But i think i made it a lil too big, and it just wouldnt fit + brake cables that are too long that get in the way

I agree you need some sort of loop going from the front of the box to the handlebar or that little joint below it, and probably the back to stem too.Â
Also everything you tried sounds slippery, so if you still need something on the bottom I’d try a more rubbery textile or put little dots of glue on those things. I mean let it dry so the glue is like bumps on the textile (or I guess you could do something similar on the box itself). Not actually gluing that thing to your bike.Â

Id try getting an inner tube as some recommends. I dont want a glue or doubel sided tape to leave residue on my bike, and tear the cardboard bag when i remove it.

You could also try cutting a piece of drawer liner. The kind that comes in a mesh roll and is non slip.

I use boxer briefs to stop my bag sliding too much.

u/OverDeparture8799 10d ago
Do you put it in between the bag and headtube?

I put my bag, my tube, and my head inside the boxer briefs.

Look up how to tie a prussik knot. It adds friction so things don’t slide. I am curious though what’s keeping it from falling over though?

Some foam from the same package that i use for the bag, or container i guess. Had a master tie it down since im bad at tying. Just 2 of those is enough to make it secure

Cut up an old inner tube and use the rubber
