r/MYOG Monthly Discussion and Swap

Post your questions, reviews of fabrics, design plans, and projects that you don't feel warrant their own post!

Did you buy too much silnylon? Have a roll of grosgrain, extra zipper pulls, or a bag of insulation sitting around that you want to get rid off? Post it below and help someone else put it to use!

So is MYOG worth it from a budget perspective? For starters I already have a sewing machine and Ive been wanting an xmid 1 tent ($270) for a while now. Im looking at the prices of the fabrics by themselves off a trekking pole tent pattern i found online and material costs are nearly $200. Not sure if im doing something completely wrong but those prices seem a little crazy. My main worry is saving maybe $70 for something I have to spent 10-20 hrs on that might not be as good at the retail product? idk

Don't sew something because you want to save money. Sew it because you created something and you will feel proud when you use it.

I tell people. See this POS? I made it. I can see them feign impressed but I side they are like.....why?

Seriously tho. The money savings isn't there in myog. Also. You most likely won't be happy with your first rendition. Proud but not happy.

So true!
I started my first myog project, because I didn’t want to spend €150 for a helinox chair. Planned the budget with €100, ended up paying €170 due to expensive mistakes.
The fun building and using it was worth every single cent though!

I think I'm at about $3k in materials and equipment to save money on probably $2k on much MUCH better backpacking gear. I'm like you though. I love all my janky gear.
