r/MYOG Monthly Discussion and Swap

Post your questions, reviews of fabrics, design plans, and projects that you don't feel warrant their own post!

Did you buy too much silnylon? Have a roll of grosgrain, extra zipper pulls, or a bag of insulation sitting around that you want to get rid off? Post it below and help someone else put it to use!

So is MYOG worth it from a budget perspective? For starters I already have a sewing machine and Ive been wanting an xmid 1 tent ($270) for a while now. Im looking at the prices of the fabrics by themselves off a trekking pole tent pattern i found online and material costs are nearly $200. Not sure if im doing something completely wrong but those prices seem a little crazy. My main worry is saving maybe $70 for something I have to spent 10-20 hrs on that might not be as good at the retail product? idk

MYOG is not at all worth it from a budget perspective lol, unless you only ever make flat tarps and stuff sacks. imo having planned and made several tents, they are extremely, extremely reasonably priced for what you get. Xmids in particular are seriously well designed.. but it is so much cooler and fun to make it yourself and have the pride of making it yourself!

It occurs to me that you don't really know what you want or need until you have a lot of tenting nights under your belt (ideally in more than one tent).

At which point you've already spent a bunch of money on tents, so why not spend some on fabric for a change?! :7)
