Question | Асуулт What is the average salary of a mining engineer in Mongolia?
I’m planning to study Geophysics abroad with the goal of eventually becoming a mining engineer here in Mongolia. Before I fully commit to a university with its insanely high tuition, I’d like to get a better idea of the average salary and career prospects for mining engineers in Mongolia.
I’m also considering applying for Rio Tinto’s scholarship, which requires recipients to work for the company for five years after graduating (or so I’ve heard). I’m interested in the opportunity, but I’d like to understand the earning potential and career path of a mining engineer before committing to that kind of agreement.
I’d really appreciate any insights from mining engineers or people working in the industry.
Thanks in advance for the help!

Go on Zangia and look up job postings, you'll get the general gist of the avg income from there.

I worked at OT as an expat Mining Engineer for 6 years. OT Mining Engineers are paid about 2 times more than at other mines in Mongolia. They also get medical insurance. The camp, facilities and roster are much better than other mines. The safety culture at OT, which should be a major consideration when choosing where to work, is very good and meets international standards. Career prospects at OT are good. There are hundreds of mining engineers, so there are many opportunities to move sideways into other departments to broaden your breadth of knowledge. There are also opportunities to move into senior positions. OT has intern opportunities. Doing an internship at OT will greatly increase your chance of getting a job when you graduate. The OT graduate program is very good and will give you experience in different departments as well as coaching and mentoring. You can apply for the intern and graduate programs through the OT website. OT has both domestic and international scholarships for mining engineers. Apply via the OT website. While having a degree from an international university is highly regarded, most of the OT mining engineers have degrees from domestic universities like MUST. Rio Tinto has sites all over the world. There are opportunities for Mongolian Mining Engineers to work internationally. You mention that you are going to study GeoPhysics. If you want to be a mining engineer I suggest that you go straight into a mining engineering course. If you are going to study internationally choose a university with a good reputation for mining.
