US Starting in mining industry and relocating family to Nevada/Utah area

Hi guys! I'm thinking about starting career in mining and relocating with my family to Nevada (Elko) or anywhere in the area where we can find housing and good schools.

I have almost 10 years of experience working different jobs at steel mill. My question is, what would be the best town to relocate to with kids?

Which mines pay the best and offer best bonuses? Which companies offer 7/7 rotation? I would probably be looking for jobs on processing and lab end of operations but I'm flexible. Is 120k+ with bonuses a year realistic at the beginning?

Thank You for all Your help!

It varies so much. Elko is a good start. They don't work 7/7. I'd find a job before moving.

Elko has not only mine proximity but most services and is a good place to start. There is also a large presence of drilling companies, OEM’s, and mine service companies located there. Find the job first, housing is expensive, limited at times. Many work 4-day schedules, 12-hour shifts and 3-hours a day on a bus or in a truck. Ely and Eureka also have mine proximity, much smaller, limited choices and opportunities but may be worthy of a look. Good luck on your quest.

SMD does 7/7. Doesn’t pay as well as NGM though. Timberline is 14/7, (diamond drilling). NGM is 5/4. Month of night/days…at least at Leeville.

My house is for sale in Elko. 585k and it’s yours. Close to All the schools.

So if they work 14/7 or
7/7 everything over 40h in a week is paid as 1.5x OT?

No clue on the particulars. Just chat a few of them up in the locker room. I’m sure they are making good cash.

Oh, and I’m Underground, so are they. Not sure how the bonus works for either. I know SMD does a percentage type bonus as you increase in tech levels.

NGM bonus is a rollercoaster recently. Some months great, others we’ve been suckin it. Just gotta roll with it, or bounce.

maybe the Mule Canyon mine. It was recently sold to a new operator.

Mine operators near Elko and Winnemucca: Nevada Gold Mines, Kinross Bald Mountain, Marigold, Florida Canyon. Contractors: Major Drilling, Timberline, GMS, Boart-Longyear, Redpath, Cementation.

As mentioned - get the job first. Should be no issue depending on your skills. Choose your hometown based on the job. Cost of living is high here and we are remote.

Thank You! What do you mean by high cost of living? I’ve seen some 2br apts in elko for like 1600-1700 on Zillow it didn’t seem too bad

Pretty fussy for someone just starting out. Maybe in an old Dinosaur but fuck me you generally had to work in a real shit hole to get experience back when I started and more than likely at best a 2/1 roster
