I see it as being for a candy bin at a restaurant or a barber or something. Take 1 or 2, if not wrapped they're gross.

No argument from me though. Still too much plastic.

u/APRengar 9h ago

Should be like a gum dispenser. It dispenses a serving of jelly beans, so no individual can paw at them.

-59

u/iampierremonteux 8h ago

It’s great until a 4 year old sticks a tongue up the dispenser…

76

u/Pixelbuttzz 8h ago

Any four-year-old that could figure out how to stick their tongue up a candy machine would easily be able to contaminate this candy too. If we're building the entire world based on what four year olds will stick their tongue on then there is no vending device in the world to solve the problem

3

u/YourUncleBuck 7h ago

I think we could figure something out with some AI facial recognition and one of those shock thingies that R2D2 had. The future is now, baby.

1

u/Pixelbuttzz 4h ago edited 4h ago

Our AI can't see toddlers, that's why the smart cars hit all the kid sized crash dummies but maybe the R2D2 components could help with that

2

u/Wonderful-Pollution7 2h ago

All you'd need is a 9 volt battery, and a couple conductive studs. With a plastic dispensing chute, put two studs on the inside about 2.5cm apart. Connect the positive to one, the negative to the other. If someone sticks their tongue in, it does the same thing as putting your tongue on a live battery.

3

u/samuelgato 3h ago

That's... not at all how a gumball machine works

1

u/iampierremonteux 3h ago

Will there be success for the kid? No.

I’ve seen kids do it though.

1

u/GreyWolfTheDreamer 7h ago

It's been a very long time since that happened, at least since Gene Simmons was a little kid...

"Gene, stop putting your long tongue in weird places! People will think you are some kinda freak!" - Mom

15

u/Pixelbuttzz 8h ago

One or two jelly beans should not be the candy bin at a barber or something, a hard candy is much more appropriate for something like that jelly beans are not a good single candy candy

4

u/Auto_Traitor 7h ago

It's so the person offering them can have them in a bowl for people to grab a hand of them (or several types of wrapped candies) without dirtying up all the other ones. I still think it's dumb and wasteful, but not for the reason you've stated.

6

u/Pixelbuttzz 3h ago

No I get that, I think individual jelly beans is a stupid fucking size. The size makes sense for hard candy but jelly beans should be in like little packages with at least three or four. You're going to have people grabbing like six of these in individually unwrapping each one and it makes no sense especially from the perspective of the candy store selling it that clearly has other unwrapped candies in the bins in this picture around it

3

u/JacksFalseHope 5h ago

Doubt. Thats a scoop and containers on either side and above and below it seems. Definitely a store

0

u/garbageemail222 5h ago

Right, it's so the barber can go buy more for his bin.

1

u/_steve_rogers_ 3h ago

You could at least package like 20 of them. This is fucking insane and so awful for the environment

0

u/Weak_Swimmer 8h ago

Shrinkflation for maximum profit- welcome to our future..

7

u/CarinasHere 9h ago

Haha, my thought exactly.

u/not_a_mod_4_real 9h ago edited 9h ago

This is the correct sub and if you don't understand why, you are also mildly infuriating

Edit: really surprised at the down votes when the original is positive. I didn't imagine redditors like the plastic pollution. It's like the pealed banana in a plastic bag product.

62

u/EvilBillSing 9h ago

If you dont know why this is mildly infuriating that is mildly infuriating.

10

u/RaeaSunshine 8h ago

I think people are misinterpreting you saying “this is the correct sub” as meaning THIS sub. They think you’re saying that actually it should only be on mildlyinteresting and you’re disagreeing with the recommendation. When really you mean the opposite.

6

u/Pixelbuttzz 8h ago

You might need another edit, your first comment sounds like you are saying that this picture is mildly interesting and belongs here rather than what you are actually trying to say

-3

u/not_a_mod_4_real 7h ago

Well, Its too late now. I can't help if redditors immediately jump to the worst read and run with it. Good lesson to remember implied context does not always read how you imagine it will

3

u/Auto_Traitor 7h ago

It's not, "the worst read..", though, it's the correct read from how you phrased it. Saying "That", or, completing the thought, "Your suggestion is the correct sub", would have better conveyed your thought.

9

u/istrx13 9h ago

Dawg are you fr

0

u/not_a_mod_4_real 9h ago

Honestly surprised at how negative it went. The original post sending to mildlyinfuriating is positive and I was agreeing with it.

11

u/Nelstron3000 8h ago

Your comment really doesn't read like you were agreeing at all. "This is the correct sub" really sound like "the sub we are currently in is the correct one".

That paired with the insult despite literally now one disagreeing with you yet makes the comment also feel unnecessarily hostile, so people aren't really being primed to read it in a positive light.

Basically, people thought you were advocating for the plastic waste while being an asshole to boot.

0

u/not_a_mod_4_real 7h ago

Yea, I get it. I generated -100 in like 5 minutes. The implied context of it being a reply under the main thread just wasn't there for the cursery reader I guess.

2

u/Auto_Traitor 7h ago

You definitely should have said, "That is the correct sub,", saying, "This is the correct sub,", in this context can really only lead to the conclusion everyone had. People tend to think of the sub they're currently in as an area, like a physical space. So with that in mind, "this sub" is where we currently are, "that sub", would be one someone mentioned in a comment.

0

u/not_a_mod_4_real 6h ago

Even with my edit the downvotes continue to grow. That is mildly interesting

1

u/Auto_Traitor 6h ago

I mean, it's only interesting if you disagree with my previous comment. I can kinda see how you meant what you say you meant, yes, but your initial comment implies the opposite of what you meant and your edit doesn't actually clarify anything, it basically just says that you didn't mean it that way and don't understand why people don't see that.

1

u/Sad-Celebration-7439 28m ago

Edit it to say "that" since people are misunderstanding. Idk, I understand what you meant.

4

u/DaKrazie1 8h ago

Ohhhh it reads as if "This" refers to the subreddit where we currently are. At least to me. So it sounded like a disagreement. 😆

113

u/UncleCeiling 7h ago

Back in the 90s we used to get my diabetic grandmother sugar free jelly bellys and they came individually wrapped like that. I assume it's to slow you down so you don't get the haribo poops from too much artificial sweetener.

30

u/Delicious_Pain_1 7h ago

The 5lb sugar free haribo funny bears have the funniest reviews I've ever read.

3

u/Shadow_Edgehog27 33m ago

All I remember from one I heard was “I was begging god to kill me” and genuinely it’s one of the funniest things I’ve ever heard in response to a gummy bear

2

u/MrT735 6h ago

Be sure to read them in the voices they use in the adverts.

314

u/r0ndy 10h ago

Gross. Ridiculous plastic waste and they are definitely charging you extra for that process and extra plastic.

34

u/Early_Hall5720 10h ago

Plot twist the wrapper is made of sugar

52

u/080087 9h ago

Some candy (e.g. white rabbit) has something akin to rice paper as an edible wrapper

7

u/FenHarels_Heart 7h ago

But then if you eat the wrapper doesn't that just defeat the purpose of having a wrapper? You're now eating something that was just getting touched and contaminated by god knows what.

10

u/SoulessHermit 7h ago

To clarify there is 3 main components of the candy.

  1. The milk candy

  2. The edible rice paper that surrounds the candy

  3. The exterior wrapper which wraps around the entire candy, which contains the branding and all, that you throw.

So item 3 is the part people touch and discard, is not eligible. Is still a candy with a wrapper.

2

u/FenHarels_Heart 4h ago

So then that defeats the purpose of wrapping it in rice paper. Because it's not really protecting the candy, it's being protected by the actual wrapper. It's more like a rice paper coating that's just part of the food. Rather than a wrapper that just happens to be edible.

3

u/twilightwillow 2h ago

These are candies that would stick together in even mildly humid environments without individual wrappers, and they chose rice paper rather than plastic. The rice paper isn’t to keep them clean, that’s what the plastic bag they collectively come in is for

2

u/XiTzCriZx 4h ago

I'd imagine the wrapper wouldn't taste very good. It being edible means it should be able to just be thrown on the ground and it'll dissolve or an animal will eat it, rather than plastic that would stay there basically forever.

2

u/FenHarels_Heart 4h ago

I suppose that makes sense. It's just a biodegradable alternative.

1

u/Early_Hall5720 6h ago

Particles of everything float around constantly and things can travel down to your hands after you washed them, I'm sure it's not as bad but you're still eating someone's particles.

1

u/FenHarels_Heart 3h ago

I mean, yeah sure. Technically you're never going to eat anything sterile. But there's a difference between a couple parts per million of dirt landing on your food, and a wrapper that been touched by potentially hundreds of people and probably dropped on the floor at least once.

20

u/Lady_Sybil_Vimes 9h ago

One of my favorite things as a Korean-American girl is watching people try to peel off the White Rabbit rice paper lol

10

u/fishloofah 9h ago

Carpooling with a Chinese childhood friend and watching her and her mom eat them blew my mind. Like how ingenious humans can be!

1

u/jordanundead 2h ago

There was a gum like that back in the day, but I can’t remember which one I wanna say like stride or extra.

1

u/r0ndy 5h ago

That would be a good plot twist. Cost is still relevant but might be excusable

121

u/rebelvong1 10h ago

This really just pisses me off. Why?

31

u/TheBattleOfEvermore 8h ago

My assumption is to prevent people from scooping and eating without paying.

When I was REALLY little, since there was no wrapping and I saw some adults sneak a few, I thought the candy was free and would always eat a few things out of those bins. One day my mom saw and explained the whole process and I never did it again, but I most definitely saw adults continue to.

This would make it a lot harder to just pop in your mouth lol

5

u/IntrinsicGiraffe 8h ago

Makes it less gross to scoop and pocket, though.

5

u/Khelek7 9h ago

This is where managers and HR goes to get "record profit year for the company" awards for the team.

1

u/KEN_LASZLO 5h ago

What, you don't like their tasty microplastic flavor?!

1

u/airfryerfuntime 46m ago

So you can throw a handful in your purse or bag and occasionally grab one.

-98

u/SheerKhann 9h ago

Because it’s self serve. Do you want jelly beans that 20000 ppl have touched? It’s stupid, but I get it

59

u/One_Edge592 9h ago

My brother in Christ, that's what the scoop is for.

1

u/airfryerfuntime 45m ago

If you believe people aren't putting their bare-ass grubby hands in there, I have a sticky bridge to sell you. I shop at WinCo, I've seen the horrors of the bulk candy section.

-56

u/SheerKhann 9h ago

Duh!!! 🙄 Do you think the scoop is gonna protect ppl from still sticking their hand in? Probably not. But let’s downvote me to hell because yall don’t understand

34

u/westcoastwillie23 9h ago

It's still a bad solution to the problem.

If people can't be trusted to use bulk hygienically, the answer is to sell in reasonably portioned packages, not one bag per bean. That's insane.

-28

u/SheerKhann 9h ago

I don’t recall saying it was a good solution. Just pointed out why they did it, but yall clearly just wanna fight up in here

29

u/westcoastwillie23 9h ago

The overwhelming opinion is "this is dumb" not "this is dumb because people are never gross"

You're trying to defend a point that no one was arguing.

-11

u/SheerKhann 9h ago

Here’s your hill ⛰️

24

u/cydril 9h ago

There has been self serve jellybeans from a bin since the damn Victorian era and it's fine. They're behind a shield and you scoop them with a spoon. Individual plastic wrap is bonkers.

11

u/hitemlow 9h ago

Have you seen how Jelly Belly has theirs? It's from a gravity-fed dispenser so beans that come out can't go back in. Keeps the public from handling them and you don't have to make my own personal hell by individually wrapping them.

8

u/SpiderDijonJr 9h ago

It seems to be you that doesn’t understand my good sir. Hence the downvotes.

-7

u/SheerKhann 9h ago

Nah. I’m gonna stick with the fact that yall are fucking stupid. And clearly nobody read my original comment. So you can downvote all you want. Am I supposed to cry about it now or what?

8

u/Big_Z_Beeblebrox 9h ago

7

u/swankyfish 9h ago

The other stuff in the photo isn’t wrapped though, so that’s not it.

12

u/Not_a_Rodeo_Clown 9h ago

Why is it the folks who come out to defend the most obvious examples of waste always have the same line? Stop “getting” things this stupid. I am once again mildly infuriated.

-4

u/SheerKhann 9h ago

Because in the grand scheme of it all, this waste is terrible, but not the hill to die on.

3

u/Ill-Be-There-For-You 9h ago

The sweets underneath appear to be loose and unwrapped though.

7

u/Mysterious_Fennel459 9h ago

It was 400 people in the other comment. 20000 in this one? Well how many people is it that didnt use the accompanying scoop?

6

u/milo159 9h ago

Nitpicking someone for hyperbole is stupid and petty even when they're wrong. The problem theyre talking about is even a real potential problem, its just that this is such an awful solution to it that its a bigger problem than what it's trying to solve.

-4

u/SheerKhann 9h ago

THANK YOU! One person actually critically thought about it.

-2

u/SheerKhann 9h ago

As many as I feel like saying.

1

u/Pixelbuttzz 8h ago

I don't know if you've ever been to a place where they self-serve candy and bins but none of it has individual rappers

0

u/SheerKhann 7h ago

REALLY??????? Wow! Had no idea!!!!

1

u/Pixelbuttzz 4h ago

So... you see the other candy unwrapped in this image and understand the basic format?

0

u/m0rganfailure 8h ago

I have never died from pick n mix

this is just wasteful as fuck

1

u/SheerKhann 7h ago

You fucking idiots have missed my point. I said a long time ago it was wasteful. Yall just wanna fight

1

u/CommieDog2525 4h ago

And you keep coming back for more :p

15

u/GreenZebra23 7h ago

If they feel they have to do this, then they should do little mini packets of a handful of jelly beans each. This is asinine and obscenely wasteful.

11

u/sudden-SOUND 8h ago

I saw a Halloween candy pack that included single gummy bears. Whoever supplies that should get TP'd.

2

u/clonxy 8h ago

TP'd?

teleported? toilet paper?

7

u/sudden-SOUND 8h ago

Toilet papered. It's a prank teenagers do to people they don't like around Halloween.

-2

u/clonxy 8h ago

oh, I remember watching movies and seeing people do it in the 80s and early 90s, but I don't think that's been popular after COVID.

1

u/ChampionOfdimlight 7h ago

Makes sense during quarantine people were willing to beat each other to death over toilet paper.

https://giphy.com/gifs/DgkqHvoNV7XPh5a0PY

52

u/Own-Concentrated-Lov 10h ago

-68

u/SheerKhann 9h ago

Because who wants jelly beans after 400 hands have entered that container? I’m sure you’d want to buy them with the thought in your mind that ppl were touching them

40

u/Mysterious_Fennel459 9h ago

That's what the little shovel is for...

-55

u/SheerKhann 9h ago

No fucking shit. 🙄 yall fucking stupid. I cannot believe this needs to be explained

16

u/squirrelyfoxx 9h ago

So the correction is wrapping every single jelly bean? Holy overcorrection and pollution, not to mention adding to the micro plastics we already have in us

-13

u/SheerKhann 9h ago

No. Thats not the correction. And I never said it was. How about yall read my original comment and stop arguing with me over something I never tried to defend. I simply pointed out why they might have done it, and you mfs are doing everything in your power to argue with me about it

15

u/squirrelyfoxx 9h ago

Because you're pointing out a problem that didn't need a solution

-5

u/SheerKhann 9h ago

I didn’t point out a problem… yet you keep telling me that. I just stated why they might be wrapped and everyone shit on themselves. That should have been the end of it…. Yet here we are dragging it out

10

u/isopode 9h ago

it's always funny when the stupidest person in a room calls everyone else stupid

5

u/PaleontologistAble50 9h ago

Extra seasonings 😋

1

u/Own-Concentrated-Lov 5h ago

Show me on the Doll, where they touched you.

12

u/Devin_Ward79 10h ago

that's a lot of wrapping for such a tiny jelly beans🫘

8

u/LeoLaDawg 6h ago

As a former industrial mechanic guy I bet the machine that individually wraps these semi delicate items is a total pain in the ass to deal with.

1

u/Tasty-Traffic-680 3h ago

Check out some videos of double wrap candy machines. They're pretty cool. A lot of progressive steps done in basically one motion.

10

u/mellifleur5869 9h ago

Every time I see something like this and get upset I remember that I work in a grocery store, I see how much plastic and trash we produce daily and we are 1 store of probably a million in the country producing this much trash daily.

13

u/mwpdx86 9h ago

People are saying it's cause everybody touches them but like... you're gonna put your hands all over the wrapper when you're eating them, so anything on the wrapper is getting in your mouth either way.

1

u/I0A0I 7h ago

Don't need to touch the stuff inside the wrapper. Untwist the end and just squeeze the insides into you mouth. Like popping a pimple.

9

u/Correctedsun 9h ago

The germaphobe in me and the environmentalist in me just pulled guns on one another.

2

u/CarinasHere 9h ago

The third person is the one that doesn’t want to unwrap a jelly bean with a pair of tweezers :-)

7

u/astralseat 8h ago

You just know this because some kida put their damn hands in instead of using the scoop

5

u/DarthWoo 7h ago

Coworker told me a story of how he was filling the self serve gravity fed bins with unwrapped candy of some kind. Just as soon as he'd topped it off and turned to put away the bag, some kid ran up and stuck his hand right in and grabbed a bunch. His mother didn't even say anything. Had to shrink out (then) $70 worth of candy.

4

u/st-shenanigans 7h ago

I hate to say it but kids were doing that for literal decades, a lot of us just didn't care as much until covid happened lmao

6

u/EnergyVampire4u 6h ago

Really separated the nasty people from functioning adults.

So gross seeing adults not cover their sneezes, wash their hands or care about their overall health.

-4

u/Radiolotek 5h ago

So true. Even though we all knew it was bullshit and masks did nothing watching people not even try to be clean was crazy.

I never wore a mask because I had a functioning brain but I at least washed my hands more frequently and was more aware of my surroundings.

Many of these people couldn't even cough into an elbow or anything.

5

u/EnergyVampire4u 5h ago

You joke but it was funny watching the morons say mask don’t work then sneeze everywhere and not see the irony.  They were so dumb they thought the masks filtered the air.

Good time especially with air travel watching these “Alpla males” get kicked off flights and banned over a mask.

One flight to Cancun was the best because the husband and wife on or flight got physically removed all over a mask.

-2

u/Radiolotek 5h ago

I flew constantly during those times and never wore a mask. I would hang a piece of cloth off my nose to satisfy them but again, they did nothing.

2

u/st-shenanigans 3h ago

The paper masks they gave everyone are droplet protection. They catch bigger particles from YOUR breath, sneezing, and talking. They help protect other people when you aren't aware you're sick yet.

They are not 100% effective, but that does not mean the "do nothing"

Your little piece of cloth did less than they did, and you actively made the problem worse by spreading misinformation like this.

-2

u/Radiolotek 3h ago

Lmao COVID was a farce and even that terrorist fauchi admitted the masks did nothing.

Holy, you people can't be this dim right?

1

u/st-shenanigans 3h ago

I work in a hospital and watched people die from it bud. You're wrong.

You got played like a fiddle by the same people that brag how much they love the uneducated.

0

u/Radiolotek 2h ago

Oh, it was a severe flu, that's true.

Not the crazy pandemic you'd like people to believe.

I also work in the medical field, doesn't automatically make you right.

And people die from the flu every year. Not a new development.

→ More replies (0)

1

u/XiTzCriZx 4h ago

It's not that masks do nothing, it's that most people weren't wearing the correct type of mask. N95 masks do actually work, but those paper thin bullshit ones hardly do anything. I'd definitely prefer someone coughing or sneezing into a mask than doing it right onto the person they're standing next to because they have absolutely zero common sense.

1

u/astralseat 4h ago

I honestly started realizing how many people coughed into their hand, literally their main hand, that they used to touch everything

2

u/Radiolotek 4h ago

I noticed that too. Or that people will pick their nose or wipe it then shake hands without washing or sanitizing, it's pretty gross.

3

u/LordFuggleButt 9h ago

Giving no more than one of these out to each trick or treater this year, curious to see how many separate times I can get my house egged/TPed

2

u/mcdadais 9h ago

If it's going to be self serve just get those twisty machine things

2

u/RosieBaby75 9h ago

Who eats a single jelly bean?

2

u/Andervtm 8h ago

Possibly cellophane and not plastic? Maybe? Please?

2

u/pillabe 7h ago

Jelly beans are finished with wax. They were already individually wrapped

2

u/PUfelix85 6h ago

Japan?

Just from my experience living here: better put those in a plastic bag and seal it, then put them in another plastic bag for carrying.

2

u/Accomplished_Sea_250 6h ago

That would drive me insane

2

u/Jinx-from-Arcane 6h ago

Third time ive seen this image today

2

u/Throwynamey 4h ago

That would be an excellent gift for a sibling.

4

u/Life-Landscape5689 9h ago

My wife won’t let me buy or use plastic straws without a lecture but motherfuckers are making tens of thousands of individually wrapped jelly beans with no signs of stopping

8

u/superluminal 8h ago

I bet they didn't ask her before they wrapped the jelly beans. She might have been able to stop it.

6

u/Life-Landscape5689 8h ago

She definitely would have tried

3

u/applesauce_pants 7h ago

Uncultured people here not understanding these are for sale to restock hotel mini-bars. They’re right next to the individually wrapped cashews.

2

u/SheerKhann 9h ago

I get it, but all that damn plastic

2

u/Specialist-Lynx-3336 9h ago

this just pissed me off so bad

1

u/StrawberryK 9h ago

Right? Like are you fuckin kidding me? Capitalism at its finest

2

u/azawindam 10h ago

Sugar coating + hot weather = sticky beans. 🫘

1

u/Omega_Aleks 9h ago

How else are they supposed to waste att that recycled plastic?

1

u/patrick5595 9h ago

It’s a single serving size of sugar and food dye, cause you know, health

1

u/Comfortable-nerve78 9h ago

Annoying, hold on gotta unwrap my handful of jellybeans , individually.

1

u/Oper8rActual 9h ago

I wonder if they still charge by the pound, and how much additional weight is added due to packaging. I know it’s not much, but it would add up over time.

1

u/Sanjuro7880 9h ago

Trying to make sure every individual piece is covered in microplastics.

1

u/JoeJonnyJeff 9h ago

These at least look like jumbo beans, slightly larger than the regular ones.
I'm so curious what the math is, if this thin film of plastic ends up being less overall plastic waste than one of those tiny packs of like 20 jelly beans.

1

u/heliosphann 8h ago

I just ate a Haribo "Treat Size" that had FOUR Gummies in it. FOUR!

We're so cooked.

1

u/Freddy704 8h ago

Are these supposed to be high quality?

1

u/cynnamonn 8h ago

1

u/ChadJones72 5h ago

There better be drugs in those jellybeans or else that's incredibly wasteful.

1

u/Trumpburnerforlibs 3h ago

Do you have indivually wrapped cashews? How about coke in a glass harmonica?

1

u/TheManWhoClicks 1h ago

Wouldn’t be too hard to make something like this illegal

1

u/airfryerfuntime 44m ago

This is evidence that redditors will bitch about literally anything.

I guess this is no different from those mints they give you at restaurants, they're really about the same size.

OP, I know those jellybeans are fresh-a-licious, but they produce an awful lot of trash.

Yeah all the microplastics we keep putting in our bodies definitely is healthier…
