Don't be disappointed! Christmas is right around the corner, you'll see them in the store soon

If you squeezed it would it crumble and fall apart? Or is it so densely compacted now that it would hold its shape?

u/PeachasaurusWrex 12h ago
If you squeezed hard enough I'm sure it would crumble, but it wouldn't fall apart with light handling. I wouldn't go about using it as a pool ball, but just picking it up and moving it from place to place or holding it would probably be fine.
Would probably depend on the exact mix of dirt/clay though.

u/HalfBakedPuns 12h ago
its super packed, you probably couldn't crack it without trying to or dropping it

IIRC Mythbusters used this technique to prove that you can, in fact, polish a turd.

dorodangos are perfectly mildly interesting. If you make several from different dirt sources you could compare the colors

I just realized this could be an excellent way to make keepsakes from camping trips or hikes. Keep a few handfuls of dirt when digging out the fire pit, and a fun thing to do with your hands while laying back and watching the fire.

This made me unintentionally laugh several times. I couldn’t hold it at “making a mountain out of a mole hill”.
Thanks for bringing this gem (or dirt ball) to my attention

That was my first thought! I’m glad I wasn’t the only one. I was shocked when I found out those were real things.

u/Fine-Construction962 12h ago
That's actually fascinating, how do you keep it from just turning back into dirt in your hand like that?
12
u/5C0L0P3NDR4 11h ago
you want really fine soil with good clay content and you get it wet, smush more mass on, polish it heavily, add more water and mud, polish heavily, again and again and again till you get a shiny outside, and the entire ball is compressed enough to bind together with the sticky clay as it dries. if you drop them they immediately break and the inside is flat and dirty, they're neat

If anyone is interested in this process, I watched this video about it a few months ago

u/Monocular_sir 5h ago
That was interesting. Do you know any other channels where someone tries out random hobbies?

u/Afraid_Government_74 7h ago
I think It's kinda beautiful that humans can just randomly make balls out of anything when we feel like it

doradango noriko is the best for showing techniques and reiterating the effort involved (providing times for each step) (youll want like 4 hrs over 2 days).
her main downfall is not showing any hints as to sourcing and processing your own dirt. andy wards ancient pottery channel is a great source for foraging and refining info.
i posted my most recent one elsewhere in the thread. theyre a lot of fun

Hey!
There are quite a few YouTube videos if you search ‘how to make dorodango’. Pretty straightforward process but requires patience
I followed the YouTube videos and got some decent results

Fun little fact is that the top of a beer bottle (or any bottle if you have others...) can be used to fashion these.

Keep it under your pillow for the dirt man.
It might confuse him enough that you don’t get taken to his lair

nice work OP! dorodango are super fun and affordable to get into, and yours looks a lot better than i was able to get on my first couple attempts. this was my most recent from this summer, probably my fifth or sixth
anyone interested in attempting should follow Noriko's guide, but you can source the dirt naturally. this is clay and sand from the shores of lake Superior 💙

I didn't know this was actually a thing. I only knew about the concept from the Inheritance Cycle books. Makes sense because Paolini is a weeb (it's just a joke don't @ me) and used a Japanese sword forging book to describe the forging of Eragon's sword.

Is it clay, and can it be fired to make a ceramic ball thing? (I know nothing about pottery, and it might be showing).
3
u/HalfBakedPuns 11h ago
i dont know about pottery in general, but at the end of the process its a very dense, dry ball. if it was wet even a little it would explode in the oven. you do add an aggragate (4-1 clay and sand) just like you would in regular pottery, for just the core, with a pure clay surface for max smoothness

Good soil sample.
Now where are you going to get dirt for your next one from so you can compare final products to see what different locations create?

u/Accomplished-Ad-8702 1h ago
Nice! You learn something new everyday. That’s be sweet to collect some dirt from different travel locations. Looks pretty satisfying to make

I had a brain fart when I was like “oh that’s why the guy from Zelda is called that, because he’s a dirt guy who turns into a ball” but then i realized I got the Gordon’s and the Dodango mixed up
