Coming from a dude that drives a truck and tows frequently, it should be illegal to drive with a hitch in your truck if you’re not trailering anything.

I know these guys are parked, just throwing out my opinion.

These larpers. Haven't towed something for months if not years.

Rusty balls prove the point.

I see this shit all the time. Biggest truck but shortest bed. Ball hitch, no tow. My big suv is because I can't keep it in my pants. I have reasons.

Rusty tow balls indicate that friction from towing has worn through the chrome plating and exposed bare steel.

If ya ain't a towing, don't be a showin'.

•

u/8_-inconspicuous-_8 55m ago

Didn't even put balls on their truck to really give off the effect

u/makersmarkismyshit 1h ago

It IS in some jurisdictions

u/DiWHY-Anyone 1h ago

I have a tow bar on my sedan and I toss the hitch in my trunk when it's not in use. I don't need to accidentally bash into shit when I'm backing up or let the elements slowly eat it.

u/Unencrypted_Thoughts 1h ago

Same. I always take my hitch off. Takes 60 seconds to put it back on and I tow almost every weekend.

•

u/GrowHappyPlants 2m ago

They probably don't even know how to do it. Those trucks are "all hat, no cattle".

I have a truck with a hitch I use for towing for work, it’s not a small hitch but wouldn’t this whole problem be solved by them not backing in?

•

u/Lost_Somewhere7110 47m ago

I thought the point was that they can’t drive so backing out would be too hard?

•

u/FullMetal_55 34m ago

no cause i've cracked my shins in a walmart parking lot with these damn hitches sticking into the drive aisle... (I've also seen people with these hitches back into cars too... just take them out...

Backing in a big ass truck into car size parking spots is way easier to both get in and out. Remove hitch, don’t back in as far or park further away in a spot that doesn’t require backing in.

•

u/TheyCallMeSuperChunk 52m ago

A huge truck like this would have a hitch stick out into the lane if it hadn't backed in. Also, it's  s still a problem to drive with a hitch if it's not being used. It effectively renders all the safety features of your truck ineffective in the case of a rear-end collision, making an accident more harmful that it needs to be for all parties. Its also really hard to see when parallel parking, and someone may thing they have more room than they do, judging by where your bumper begins.

It's overall a dick move that should be illegal.

I also wish they wouldnt put sidewalks right up against parking spaces as it is obvious this is going to happen.

Put the concrete bumper things in 2 feet before the sidewalks, atleast.

•

u/firefighter2727 52m ago

As someone who drives large van, I intentionally often have to overhang sidewalks like this as the parking spots are too short for the vehicle.

If you pull in there’s only about 1.5’ ahead of the front tire but have multiple feet off the hanging into the roadway.

By backing in i can get out of the roadway with the negative side effect of having multiple feet hang over the sidewalk.

Obviously best practice is to avoid the spots that are next to sidewalks and try to find ones so that my back end hangs over low traffic grass but sometimes these spots are the only ones there are

•

u/durtyprofessor 15m ago

No, because it still adds ~10” minimum to the overall length of the truck. If you don’t back in, it’ll just be sticking out into the drive lane.

RIP bumpers

Usually they back in so it doesn't stick so far out in the road. Id rather have someone bust their shin as opposed to someone buried in their phones to hit it with their car. Trucks are getting bigger and the parking spaces are getting smaller

•

u/knifeyspoony_champ 52m ago

I get why parking spaces would get smaller. Why are trucks getting bigger?

2

u/CircuitCircus 1h ago

Hi pedestrian here, actually it’s better for someone to hit it with their car. People can buy new cars, I can’t buy new shins

1

u/Bluetwo12 1h ago

Honestly if you cant see a giant trailer hitch walking...lol

•

u/Zealousideal_Clue_87 39m ago

What if it’s an elderly and / or disabled person…

•

u/Bluetwo12 34m ago

An elderly person should still be able to avoid them and a disabled person would be parking in a handicap parking usually.

Its not ideal having them on the sidewalk but its not the the worst thing ever

•

u/Hamtrain0 30m ago

Just take it out and put it in the bed, man. It takes like 30 seconds

1

u/Stunning_Weather_403 1h ago

If you hit it with your shin hard enough to require a new shin, you should look where you’re walking instead of keeping your face in your phone. Also I am a huge proponent for backing into stalls. For safety reasons. It makes for a quicker getaway if the need arises

0

u/JustForkIt1111one 1h ago

You aren't losing a shin over hitting a hitch while walking.

Grow up.

1

u/sacredfool 1h ago

Parking spaces are also getting bigger, just not fast enough.

1

u/Spooky_Mulder83 1h ago

100%. I tow frequently with my SUV. But I remove the hitch when not in use. It's really not that complicated

1

u/Impossible-Froyo2598 1h ago

It is in our country.

1

u/employeremployee 1h ago

All hitch and no trailer.

•

u/Juleamun 45m ago

They do stick out pretty far. They should at least have to hang flags on them. Require little rainbow flags and they'll just take off the hitches when not in use.

Oh course these are also the same kind of people who used to hang truck nuts on their vehicles. Do with that what you will.

•

u/BJJJourney 40m ago

As someone that actually tows shit, this is 100% right. I have tried thinking of a reason to keep it in many times and I have never found a pro other than it is ready to go which doesn’t actually make sense because you can just keep it in the bed of the truck.

•

u/TTdriver 38m ago

It is in my state. Probably in others too

•

u/Ambitious_Promise_29 1m ago

It's not illegal in any US state.

•

u/InternationalSafe141 27m ago

Where I live you can get a ticket for parking like this.  Arizona law (ARS 28-873) bans stopping or parking on a sidewalk, and that applies even if only part of your vehicle is over it. A hitch hanging past your driveway onto the walkway counts as obstructing it, especially if it narrows the path for wheelchairs or strollers. In practice, enforcement usually happens after a complaint, but it is a citable offense.

•

u/I-like-old-cars 17m ago

I'm a big fan of my step bumper hitch. Doesn't make the truck any longer than it already is, and it's rated for 5000 pounds and 500 pounds of tongue weight, which is fine enough for me at this point in time.

Before anyone tells me that step bumpers aren't rated that high, it's a 1989 dodge d250. The bumper is indeed rated that high.

0

u/HomelessFed 2h ago

It’s also stupid because if you get rear ended you’re more likely to bend your frame versus not having one on.

0

u/SturdyStubs 1h ago

I was stopped at a stop sign, some dude high off his balls rear ended me. I had my hitch in. His car was totaled and there wasn’t a dent to mine. This is why I think it should be illegal. I know it was this guys fault but for the speed he was going it shouldn’t have totaled his car.

0

u/fantastic_insider 1h ago

Good to know…. So I’m gonna keep mine in then cause “not a dent” sounds pretty nice

0

u/bluestate1221 1h ago

I disagree. I have been rear ended at least three times and my hitch is what the small car ran into and therefore kept my truck from taking damage. Sure, if it’s a faster vehicle, there’s a higher chance of frame taking damage.

1

u/Robby_Rails_15 1h ago

Exactly! I was rear ended recently. Dude hit me. I got out, too a look at my hitch denting his plastic bumper, shrugged and went on with my day.

Also I would never park like this, but it's a heavy hitch and I tow often so I leave it.

-1

u/GoodgirlTiffany 1h ago

Make everything illegal!!!!!

-2

u/Embarrassed_Mouse685 2h ago

I call my monstrosity of a trailer hitch my anti tailgate feature. Granted I will take it out of it's too far in the walkway when I back in

0

u/pa_jamas360 1h ago

Just curious. How often do you tow something?

0

u/Embarrassed_Mouse685 1h ago

With that particular truck maybe once a year and only for about 20 miles tops
