Hate this shit. I drive a full-size pick up and tow all the time. Hitch is ALWAYS in the cab unless I am towing. As a G.C. I am at Home Depot, Lowe’s, etc. all the time. I’ve noticed the trucks that have these on 24/7 are almost always driven by douche nozzles that I would never hire. Dashboards full
of paper, cab a mess and bed is jammed full of crap. Oh and they never put their carts back. Inconsiderate people are everywhere, the permanent tow hitch is a good indicator that you’ve found one in the wild.
Some hitches are a pain to remove and insert. Especially as parts rust. It's also a convenient way to save your bumper from being tapped in parking lots.
Removing a hitch offers the opportunity for maintenance. A little fluid film and away it goes. But yeah, i completely agree on your second point. Backing in and over sodewalks with a shin level hunk of steel is someone elses price to pay for a bumper possibly getting exactly what it was designed to do. The best prices are the ones others have to pay. And as a bonus, the physically dusabled might not be able to use some sidewalks, amd as a red blooded christian, nothing makes us happier.
I used the same setup for years. Guess what it never got rust on it because I removed it and took care of it how you are supposed. Only way rust is an issue here is if you leave it in and don’t use it.
