frist of all how DARE yu o I wanted black cherry ice cream not “vanilla with cherry chunks”
I’m tired. My family is sick. I ran to pickup some meds and ice cream. Saw “black cherry” available which is my favorite so I quickly grabbed it. I didn’t know I had to read the fine print for “Black Cherry”.
Also - the picture isn’t even right. The ice cream is white with sparse amounts of cherry. It’s awful. I’m returning it tomorrow. I think this is BS.
91
u/ElectronicTrade7039 6h ago
The picture showing the ice cream as pink is extremely misleading.
42
u/ioncloud9 6h ago
It’s not even ice cream. It’s Frozen Dairy Desert.
17
u/RandomWordCombo9632 6h ago
It’s Frozen Dairy Desert.
Not enough milk fat in it iirc. Legally cannot be called "Ice Cream."
7
u/bulletproofpunk 6h ago
The company has been phasing out artificial dyes/coloring and has a pledge to have them removed completely by 2027.

u/ElectronicTrade7039 6h ago
I'm saying the picture of pink ice cream makes it look more cherry flavored.
Great on them for taking care of the dyes, next up, accurate pictures that match the colors of the food you're buying.

u/TheAmina2GS 6h ago
Did you... Are those fork marks?
160
u/isometrixk 6h ago
Yes! I scooped some out and my first bite I thought something was wrong with this batch. The wife tried it (with a fork) and told me I’m an idiot for not reading the fine print.
104
u/MonstrousGiggling 6h ago
To be fair the icecream on the cover is darker colored than the actual icecream and would imply that the icecream itself is black cherry flavored.
Like ya I guess you could've read it better but they also just straight up lied through visual advertising which is what people notice first. The name and look matched so why would you have to do a 3rd check to make sure its black cherry icecream.
29
u/SaintsNoah14 6h ago
Yeah, just like there's a big difference between "strawberry" and "strawberries & vanilla". The picture clearly implies that it was akin to the former.

u/GravitationalEddie 6h ago
Don't listen to the crazy utensil nazis. If you look in your drawer and are short on the 'appropriate' utensil, grab what you want to taste something that looks incredibly not right and are likely to take it back. FYI that brand is crap.

I also eat my ice cream out of the carton with a fork. And I'm not ashamed to admit it anymore!
It all started when I was a young lad, when I was a little curious.
It all started with spork and I got very comfortable.
10
u/AxzoYT 6h ago
I don’t see why this is so controversial, Ice cream is frozen solid, a fork isn’t a big deal
7
u/well_thats_obvious 6h ago
Anybody that thinks a fork is weird has never actually tried it. It glides right through the thickest and most filled ice creams. The increased surface area also melts it faster so it tastes more creamy and rich.

There are very few actual truly Cherry ice creams. Most of them are vanilla based and only have bits of cherry in them with a lot of other stuff like nuts and chocolate chunks. Two I do like are Häagen-Dazs Cherry Vanilla, because it has cherry chunks but also the ice cream is light pink/red and tastes like cherries. Another good one is Kroger's Amaretto Cherry Cordial with cherry chunks and a darker color and a good cherry/amaretto flavor. I've heard that Tillamook Oregon Dark Cherry is very good but it does not come in pints at my local stores and I am not paying for a full quart so I have not tried it yet. Any others I need to try? I am in GA USA.
7
u/fargus_ 6h ago
A lot of folks don’t realize cherry garcia is cherry ice cream and not vanilla
3
u/jmbrjr 5h ago
I've had Cherry Garcia a few times but don't feel that the ice cream itself is really that cherry flavored, at least not as much as I would want or as compared to the others above. It may have a little cherry flavor but the ice cream is off-white and vanilla looking, so not a good first impression when you open it. I've settled for this when unable to find better cherry choices.
1
u/jmbrjr 3h ago
So it happens that I had a pint of Cherry Garcia in the freezer. Wow. Coincidence.
Eating some of it now. The ice cream is not strongly flavored. It's good enough with a lot of cherry fruit chunks and chocolate fragments, but is not as very cherry tasting as the Haagen-Dazs Cherry Vanilla.

u/WattleWaddler2 6h ago
Chapman's cherry is pretty tasty, but idk if you get that down in the States.
1
u/SaintsNoah14 6h ago
That's a shame there's not more because cherry is one of the easiest fruits to compose an accurate artificial accord for.
7
u/SlopMySteak 6h ago
I had a half gallon of Turkey Hill just last week. Looked at the nutrition info just out of curiosity and was shocked at how low the saturated fat content was. Apparently they use skim milk and vegetable oils, and that’s why it is labeled as “frozen dairy dessert” and not ice cream.
Ate the whole thing in 2 days, so no real complaints.. just thought it was interesting
7
u/RemarkableSpirit5204 6h ago
Have you tried the private selection cherry cordial from Kroger? That might suit you better, the ice cream actually tastes cherry rather than vanilla. It’s not black cherry but it’s pretty damn good.
5
u/stumpy96 6h ago
The private selection brand ice cream is a GOAT. The strawberry cheesecake is my absolute favorite. Literally can't beat the quality for that price. (This doesn't apply to other private selection products though)
16
u/TurtleSandwich0 6h ago
This is what you get when you live in a Republic. If you stuck with a Monarchy, the Dairy Queen would never tolerate this tomfoolery.
9
u/slimribbons 6h ago
You use a fork for ice cream?
→ More replies (8)6
u/RandomAsHellPerson 6h ago
I use whatever I grab. A fork is almost as good as a spoon for getting ice cream (unless putting in a cone, which I only do about 1% of the time) and are as good as each other when eating the ice cream.
5
3
u/GraybieTheBlueGirl 6h ago
Damn. It does say vanilla with chunks of cherry on the side, but in the pic it’s cherry ice cream base. That’s so misleading!!!
3
u/NUMBerONEisFIRST 5h ago
Technically, that's not even ice cream.
It doesn't even have enough cream in it to legally be called ice cream.
Notice the very bottom left where it says 'dairy dessert'.
7
u/leetle_bumblebee 6h ago
OP I'm on your side. Your fam is sick, you're trying to cope, and you bought some crap by accident because everything for sale is garbage in 2026. That would suck.

9
u/Alternative_Mode9972 6h ago
IMO fine print should be made illegal as it is just an excuse for the most degenerate bullshit. Instead just have a rule stating you have to be upfront and honest about your product in as blatantly obvious ways possible
8
u/DecoyOne 6h ago
The worst “read the fine print” people are the ones who tell you to ignore THE GIANT PHOTO above the fine print.
7

11
u/shotputlover 6h ago
If somebody not reading the fine print of their ice cream container is infuriating to you, your life must be stressful.
6
u/CasualTriips 6h ago
They put the BLACK CHERRY in bold text. You shouldn't have to read the fine print below that. Especially when OP is sick, fading in and out of consciousness. You should just be able to read the big letters and grab it and go.

u/Dapper_Ice_2120 6h ago edited 6h ago
OP, I regret to inform you this package does not specifically say it's even ice cream (which is a protected term in the US)-
They didn't even bother to put "frozen dairy dessert." I'd bet that's because using "frozen dairy dessert" has gotten a bad rep the past few years as a way to quickly tell that what you're buying isn't actually ice cream. "Artificially flavored vanilla" relies on your brain filling in that it's ice cream. Feels sneaky.
ETA: I stand corrected- in the bottom L in white ink it does say frozen daily dessert
7
u/SlopMySteak 6h ago
It does say frozen dairy dessert on the bottom left
2
u/Dapper_Ice_2120 6h ago
Oh, yep, you're right in the white ink. I looked but didn't think to look there
4
u/Affectionate-Alps527 6h ago
It's not even ice cream.
It's made with milk and labeled as some kind of frozen dessert.
4
u/isometrixk 6h ago
In my defense my family was sick all weekend, we didn’t sleep, and I stopped on my way home from work.
Also in your defense - I don’t read fine prints.

You cannot be serious. Right above that on larger letters it says “black cherry”. And then you try to blame OP with the “cAnT yOu ReaD?”
This is terrible marketing design. It’s tricky on purpose.

It’s literally advertised as purple based off the picture lmao. I understand the text description fits but cmon they could’ve at least used food coloring or changed the picture

u/NUMBerONEisFIRST 5h ago
There's just been legislation to remove artificial food coloring from products, so this is likely the reasoning.
5
u/murderoustoast 6h ago
Unfortunately, if you had read the box, you would've seen that it says "vanilla with cherry chunks" right there on the front of it
7
u/megab_rising 6h ago
Fair....but it is pink in the photo that is also on the box....
2
u/murderoustoast 6h ago
Yeah it is super misleading, shitty marketing and package design to be sure. But I've personally been burned enough times on not reading packaging I take the extra second to check it out. Specifically for ice cream, some brands will just chuck random nuts into a flavor that doesn't typically have nuts. I don't have an allergy but really dislike nuts in ice cream, so I always check.
5
4
4
u/Brave_Inspection6148 6h ago
If it doesn't say ice cream on the box, it's not really ice cream :(
This sets a new low for frozen dairy products though...

u/fakeuser515357 6h ago
When you're feeling better, get one of those Ninja ice cream makers. Buy a bag of frozen cherries, blend with some milk/ cream, some vanilla protein powder (or milk powder) and 1/4 tsp xanthan gum, adjust sweetness to taste.
It will blow your friggin mind.

2
2
u/NewbornVampire 6h ago
Back in the olden days, you could actually get cherry ice cream. Nowadays, it’s always vanilla with cherries in it.
1
u/CombPsychological507 6h ago
And strawberry is the opposite. My local stores never hav strawberries in vanilla anymore, just strawberries in strawberry. I have to go to ice cream shops.
2
u/Brokettman 6h ago
Should have gotten peanut butter swirl. That goant frozen boulder of peanut butter in the center is straight up crack.
2
u/Proud-Fennel7961 6h ago

2
u/muzzey12 6h ago
Like everyone else said its the best non premium brand of Ice cream.
1
u/batmandi 6h ago
What qualifies as premium vs non-premium ice cream?
2
2
u/Yawka 5h ago
Regular ice cream is usually around 10% butterfat, and can have as much as 100% overrun, meaning an equal volume of air whipped into the product, premium is 11%-14% butterfat and under 50% overrun, and super-premium is anything over 14% butterfat and under 30% overrun. I don’t know how much of this is FDA regulation vs general convention, a need I’m also unsure how much you can skirt the rules by calling it “frozen dairy dessert” and saying “premium quality” instead of premium ice cream
1
u/ImissDigg_jk 6h ago
If that picture shows the best, I would hate to see the worst

That being said, I think this is more infuriating for you right now than it normally would be because your family is sick, you're probably sick too or just exhausted from taking care of a sick family. I don't think it's worth returning, just worth noting that you shouldn't buy that brand again. This is, excuse me, but the "cherry on top" of an already bad day. You'll laugh about it later. I hope you and your family have a better day tomorrow!
ETA: If you have small children in your family/household, save this ice cream as small treat rewards for doing extra chores/helping out extra around the house. Help the grown ups fold the laundry after dinner and get a scoop of ice cream with cherries, etc.

Pay attention. This isn’t even ice cream! Where does it say ice cream? Believe it or not, most generic and store brands are still real ice cream but vanilla is the only real ice cream for the brand names. Some say frozen dessert. Some (like this one) don’t address it at all.

Turkey Hill used to make a chocolate MALT flavor and I swear to God I've never had a better ice cream since, and I've never found it again. At the point now where the nostalgia is so deep and the dragon is so far away that I'm probably remembering it being better than it actually was, but sadly I dont think I'll ever be able to test out the theory.

Nooooo why tf did they make it pink on the thing just to say it’s vanilla on the box?
Or was this a possible rare accident?
Edit: upon inspection, the inside edges of the box appear slightly tinted pink. I don’t know what that means exactly, but I found a clue.
