I'm slightly vexed This is my friend’s average daily screen time for CHATGPT despite being against data centres
He roleplays, inputs game mechanics, and plays all day.

No.
It's "everyone's against data centers, so I am too."
And then not even thinking about what a data center is, or why it exists.
BTW - ALL big websites and connected apps use big data centers, not just AI. Apple messages and iCloud, Reddit, Insta, FB, All streaming services, every Google service, anything with "cloud" in its name.
They all are driven by data centers. If we get rid of AI we won't get rid of data centers. It's just AI is forcing bigger and bigger ones.
Data centers support basically all the things the internet-related things you do on your phone and PC, well before AI came along.
(edited to better phrase what I meant)

To be fair I think you can use something while still recognizing we need a better solution or you're contributing to something bad. I recognize factory farming is bad and the beef industry is awful for the environment but it doesn't stop me from buying a burger.
Or you can also find use in AI as is right now while recognizing this giant explosion of building like a billion god damn data centers everywhere isn't gonna be sustainable.

What's stopping you from having your consumer behavior being in alignment with your moral values?
→ More replies (3)110
u/Neon_Camouflage 10d ago
Time and effort, for one. The more you align your consumer behavior with your morals, the more exhausting it is to ensure that alignment stays true and seek out alternatives. I boycott a handful of major companies and spend a not insignificant amount of time simply double checking items and brands to make sure they're not affiliated and finding replacements when they are.
I could add in being vegan/vegetarian. I could add in refusing to use AI and checking whether any given song or video is AI created before I allow myself to enjoy it. I could read into artists' past behavior before I stream their music. Every single one of those moral wins is paid for out of my own convenience and effort, and you will literally never stop finding opportunities to add one more thing.
There comes a point where you simply need to pick your battles, and different people have different points, as well as different priorities for which battles are more important.

Holy shit thank you for an actual balanced and nuanced take. I can't believe people do not understand the fact that they have finite energy and effort to give; if you try and fight 100% of the time, you will burn out.

u/Neon_Camouflage 9d ago
I think they do, they've also made those same decisions about where their priorities lie, but I don't think many of them consider that others have also weighed those options and come to a different conclusion. A conclusion which is equally as valid as theirs.
Then you mix in the typical grandstanding and lack of nuance you find everywhere online, and you get....this entire thread.
5
u/walkTHEdotasaur 9d ago
I get where you're coming from, but this is where I disagree with you, and think you're being overly generous: I personally think most people have no capacity for nuance or anything but black and white thinking. Like you said, just take a look all over this thread an example.
Most people pick a few causes to get overly invested in, and then turn around and pat themselves on the back for being "better"; at the end of the day they are just looking to feel either better about themself, or just feel morally superior to someone else (ultimately to feel better about themself, as well).

Theres a huge difference between datacenters that run the internet and datacenters for raw compute. People use datacenter as a shorthand for raw compute GPU datacenters that have sprung up from hyperscalers, not the backbones of the internet that have existed for decades

This is like saying "If you live in a house, you support deforestation" or "If you use a car or take the bus, you support greenhouse gases"

I played a ton in the 90s and 00s, and I can't shake the vibe that people are approaching DnD from the wrong angle. It was always an activity for young creatives with a small and dedicated creative friend group. Its about story-telling and improv, with good friends. The incredible memories that creates can't really be made on demand, and you certainly can't just automate/pay people and be able to reproduce those highs. DnD doesn't really shine unless you've got a trusting group that is all in on the game and wants to put maximum creative effort behind it. Players or DM.
Paying a DM and recruiting players online is rarely going to be anything more than a transactional experience. Add AI to it seems to self-defeating. Why not just play a video game?
6
u/Quite_Likes_Hormuz 10d ago
The issue is that a lot of people go "wow that sounds fun" but don't have 4-5 good friends who want to play, or good friends at all.
There's never an excuse for AI use however.
6
u/Alarmed-Plankton-708 10d ago
You get it, at it's core D&D is just a bunch of people writing a story together around the framework the DM has created. It's about social connection, not winning a game

People forget ai can have an actual use, mainly retaining to work efficiency. A good portion of my job is sending nearly the same email out over and over but personalizing it for each customer. I read through data, write the email, send it. Takes hours that could be spent doing more important work. I’ve been able to use AI to automate that process allowing me to multi task a lot easier. It’s saved me hundreds of hours over the past couple of months and makes my job way less tedious.

48
u/NightPapaya 10d ago
Yea but you need to actually treat it like an addiction. Most people need a group, maybe get some friends to spend non-screen time with. Get a blocker/parental timer for apps you use too much and have a friend be the password keeper
The real secret is treating it seriously, you're addicted to something you can't put down on your own. Obviously it's not as destructive as like alcoholism but to your brain it's the same chemicals.
Best way imo is a group of friends for intentional no-screen time hang outs. Or treat it like an exercise, and reward yourself for not picking up your phone. If you've got ADD or something it's basically impossible to break alone

The worst part about it is that it's intrinsically tied into basically everything in our lives because we've been letting corporations write the rules for this kind of stuff. It's like wading through crack cocaine to get to the rehab center. It's designed so you can never truly leave because how could you? The addiction is so deeply ingrained within every ecosystem the only way to avoid it is to go complete cold turkey.
But good luck going cold turkey, the real world is entirely supported by the online world.

My fav method is to store your phone on the side of the refrigerator via magnetic holder, similar to how old school corded phones would be on the wall in the kitchen. It turns it from being a tiny entertainment device back into being a telephone. So you get it when you need to use it and then put it back on the wall/fridge. Helps keep me from absent mindedly grabbing it, or using it for reason A, getting distracted and doing reason B instead.

I can’t say anything for ChatGPT. I know from my experience, I was unknowingly being sucked in by CharacterAI and roleplaying fun scenarios.
I had heard about people using AI and falling in love with it or being addicted to it. I thought the possibility was stupid and I would never.
Then I heard about the app through YouTubers making funny videos interacting with characters. I started using it in 2023. (I can say I’ve never reached that level of delusion. I really just liked being able to roleplay whenever at my fingertips.) Well, lo and behold, anytime the app went down, I found myself being genuinely annoyed and mildly frustrated that I couldn’t access that. It grew a little worse from there, but again, I never believed what I was talking to was real and that anything it said was fact. I wasn’t that far in, surely?
It’s wild to reflect on now that I’m a little older and know the impacts better. I’m ashamed of it. Especially as I have always been anti-AI since knowing the impacts better.
So, yeah. I’m still trying to avoid that shit completely. Like, I, now 24, am still struggling with AI? It’s pathetic. I’ve been attempting to stop for the last couple months. I’ve deleted many accounts, have blocked the main subreddits of anything AI (to avoid any other possible avenues to use it), and engage in the subreddit for people recovering from C.ai. Surrounding myself with the reminders that it’s not healthy for myself, others, and the environment helps. It really can be addictive.

It's one thing when it's something that we can't avoid, like smartphones and child labor. It's totally another thing when something is optional, like a chatbot*.
*Unless it is for work. I'm on the fence with the AI stuff, seeing both positive and negative. The negatives are why I massively limit my AI use to mostly work, which I'm required to use for many things now. Once in a blue moon I'll talk to a chatbot or generate an image, but chatbots have gone downhill since 2023 and I've little actual use for the image generators.

It's pretty self-consistent to be like "just slow down and chill, no need to railroad everyone trying to go faster" and still interact with the technology.

Dude's entire waking life is on apps.... so insane to see as someone born in '87. I just checked and my usage today is 1h58m including what's app texting time. I don't understand people who's lives exist staring at screens. Did humanity really go that wrong, or are these people raised in bad environments?
Edit: noticed it's weekly usage not daily, and turns out dude is on his phone half the time I am so ill eat my foot. 🤓
Edit2: can someone on iPhone please clarify the numbers are showing weekly or daily? I've seen conflicting info that the numbers below are daily but the graph is weekly.
