I'm slightly vexed Guest at rental home left 45 cans of nitrous oxide aka whippets

Post image

Yes, our entire home was also trashed. Booking was for 1 person but it looks like an unauthorised/undisclosed party was thrown at our home. It’s easy to dispose these cans at a designated hazardous waste facility but it’s also a hassle to haul them across town… oh well 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yep. My best friend in college died from whippits in 2012. Im still mad at him for making that decision.

Edit: thank you everyone for your kind words and I’m sorry that some of you had similar experiences.

To the people calling me a liar, I truly hope you don’t go through something similar.

u/tookiemon Sep 09 '26

Yeah i had a friend like that aswell, he isnt dead but just completely fried his brain, nothing that comes out of his mouth makes any sense anymore, its like talking to a 3 year old.

63

u/Altruistic_Repair_19 Sep 10 '26

Same.. my long time friend started sending everyone in his phone contacts bizarre ass texts at all hours of the day. Found out from his other drug buddies it was a huge whippet problem.

Lost a sibling. Took about a year in total for it to destroy every organ. It’s awful.

140

u/ermaecrhaelld Sep 09 '26

Ugh watching a sibling’s body breaking down in real time is so hard. After my brother died from drug-related heart failure, I had to clean out his room. I found teeth everywhere. It was so fucking sad.

56

u/LucyBallistic Sep 10 '26

I had to go through all of her stuff. She had 5 cats and a dog and 100s of keyboard air dusters in her apt. We lost count after 100 and just kept cleaning them up. Everything smelled like shit and cat piss. When they took her in she had burns all over her body because the cans would get so cold after being used so much and then she would pass out and the cans would burn her skin. It’s hard to watch and as a sibling I lacked empathy when it mattered the most. I was angry and resentful that she couldn’t get it together and I was too young to really know how to support her. Not sure that it would have mattered, it was fast like I said. I know crack heads that have used their whole lives and are in their 50s or even older. It’s insane how much worse this is and no one even knows it.

43

u/ermaecrhaelld Sep 10 '26

The conversation about drugs is focused on the wrong talking points. It’s so punitive and seen as a moral failure, when it’s really a reflection of the state of mental health in our country. We aren’t addressing it correctly. I’m so sorry that happened to you. I was 32 (brother was 30) when my brother died and I wasn’t able to have any empathy by the end either and it’s taken a lot of therapy to forgive myself for never giving a last hug, or an I love you text. I thought of all these different pivotal moments when I could have tried something different. Drug addiction hurts the whole family. But the simple fact is addiction is a disease. Some people can fight it off and recover. Some people sadly don’t. I wouldn’t blame myself for not curing my brother’s cancer. I can’t blame myself for this either. And neither can you. Again, I’m so sorry. Life changes forever after loss like that. Everything is measured in ‘before’ and ‘after.’

Be kind to yourself, please.

I’m sure you have been told this a million times, but there is truly nothing you can do if they are not looking to change themselves. Don’t beat yourself up over it to much. The only silver lining about with how bad the overall addiction issues in the world have become is the broader understanding and empathy for those affected.

If you have never been to an Alanon meeting I would suggest going just to hear other people’s stories. It’s for families/ friends of addicts.

Sorry about your friend. Had the same this year with my mate. Fucked up. Of all the things someone can get addicted to I'd never have thought nitrous would be the problem it can be.

Occasionally happens in dentistry also.

27

u/Small-Construction30 Sep 09 '26

I had a dentist i went to as a kid that did it. Found out years later when I went to a different dentist. One of his old receptionists was working at the new dentist. Explains why he screwed up my teeth so bad in 3 years.

My buddy died in 2008 from Xanax and methadone. My dad, who never did a drug in his life, told me “The only mistake your friend made was trying the drug. Once the addiction took hold he didn’t have much of a choice.” Your buddy made a terrible decision, but it was the addiction that killed him.

32

u/Vegetable-Room2279 Sep 09 '26

Normally opioids make me sick but after a surgery I was given anti nausea meds with the painkillers. Took them and felt a little of the euphoria I assumed people who are addicted feel. Immediately returned it to the pharmacy because it scared the shit out of me.

Of all the emotions surrounding grief, anger is the least talked about. My friend died because he was drunk driving. Silver lining it was a single car crash, just him. But my first reaction hearing it was just anger. Was just so stupid and selfish.

13

u/Vegetable-Room2279 Sep 09 '26

Best friend died from heroin overdose a couple years ago. He had been clean for a couple of years then started up again and hid it. Incredibly smart man on paper (career, law degree, all that) and in general.

It’s hard when you think what you’d say to them, and all that comes out is “you fucking idiot. I love you, but I’m so angry with you”.

33

u/Whosiwhatsitt Sep 09 '26

Sadness is very commonly expressed as anger but for me the reversal is also true. I do not like expressing (or suppressing) anger so it is not uncommon for it to erupt from me through tears and sobs.

22

u/Worth-Club2637 Sep 09 '26

Yep, my buddy died in a drunk driving accident (his fault) and seriously injured one of our other friends. Im was sad as hell but showed it as anger cause how the fuck are you gonna be 3 years clean from heroin and then drunk drive yourself into an early grave at 23

You can absolutely die or have permanent nervous system damage from Nitrous, it strips B12 from your body and can easily cause hypoxia on top of potential harm from people falling over while on it. I'm all about shit in moderation but it's silly to think that it's some harmless thing

337

u/outer--monologue Sep 09 '26

My friend did it out back at a party while sitting with their feet in a pool away from the rest of the party. They found him dead because he passed out and drowned in the water

124

u/genreprank Sep 09 '26

What I've heard is never do them alone due to suffocation risks

83

u/NiSiSuinegEht Sep 09 '26

A friend found his dead brother when he was 12.

He'd been huffing the kind of canned air duster that got banned back in the 90s, passed out, got wedged between the bed and the wall, and suffocated.

That is fact. There is a young guy in a town over from me. He was a huge guy, football player and everybody liked him. He got into whippets and dialed in to the extent that he, while still alive and ambulatory, is a functional vegetable. He needs two people with him at all times. The last time I saw him, I was floored to see just how bad he is. He is in effect functionally braindead. Think zombie. His eyes haunt me to this day.

789

u/ShockWorried3040 Sep 09 '26

My dad almost died from this about 5 years ago.

I was staying at his house for the weekend while passing through on a trip. I could hear him using them in his room… over and over. I tried to talk to him about it, and he was pissed. He and I both cried when he apologized the next day.

ONE WEEK LATER, he wasn’t responding to anyone, which was odd, given his favorite football team was playing. His gf went to his house and found it flooded, with him in the fetal position in the shower, unable to move. Evidence of him throwing up blood throughout the house.

I had to make an emergency trip to his city to authorize a brain surgery to save his life. He was on a ventilator, and it was one of the most traumatic experiences of my life, not knowing if he was going to live or die.

It’s insane because I remember thinking to myself “at least he’s not doing pills anymore.” I didn’t realize whippets are (arguably) worse. He’s sober now 5 years later, but he is absolutely not the same person at all that he was before it happened. He absolutely has permanent brain damage that has altered his life as he knew it.

Sorry for the novel. I’ve never really talked about it before and it’s such a sensitive topic for me even still.

154

u/Vinyasa_Veritas Sep 09 '26

Not quite strips. It converts the b12 in your body to an inactive form, so even if you're getting enough b12 in your diet, you can still be deficient in the functional form if youre doing whippits frequently

→ More replies (1)

117

u/SL4YER4200 Sep 09 '26

Wow, i didnt know that about the B12. I guess thats why the whippit kids are always drinking Monster energy drinks.

212

u/captainchristianwtf Sep 09 '26

They can drink as much as they want, Nitrous makes your body unable to absorb/use it. Similar to alcohol, but anecdotally N2O does it a lot faster

189

u/petrichorax Sep 09 '26 edited Sep 09 '26

Yeah. You have to cessate for it to recover, can't just cancel it out with taking B12.

However, before anyone gets terrified of trying the occaisional 'happy ballooon' in thailand or vietnam, you need to do this ALL THE TIME over a LONG PERIOD for it to be dangerous. And it can be extremely dangerous but you need to be a heavy habitual user. The danger is accumulatory and there's a point where damage starts to set in. It's not permanent damage with your first balloon. You need to be a heavy, sustained user

The odd balloon party is mostly harmless (falling over and hitting your head risk, so do it seated). Your dentist visit with laughing gas (same exact drug) is harmless.

90

u/captainchristianwtf Sep 09 '26

I agree with you. But an important note about the dentist is that they cut the N2O with oxygen, which is safer from a hypoxia standpoint

I went into a rabbit hole about this, and it isn’t necessarily that the substance itself is terrible for your body, it’s more about the other things going on and the lifestyle that addiction to it lassos you into.

You have to do an incredibly massive amount for a very long time for the vitamin B12 deficiency to actually cause severe damage.

There is an herb-type store that sells incense and they have like, kava and stuff near us, and they sell it.

The guy that works, there is awesome, and I talk to him sometimes.

One time I was getting some relaxation tea for my husband and a lady burst through the door and cut in front of me demanding a nitrous refill thing.

He let her in front of me and sold it to her very fast and she burst back out the door.

He said that she was spending hundreds of dollars a day there on nitrous, she has had serious trauma and other issues, and at this point it was the lesser of evils. Her family was helping support it while also trying to get her psychological help.

I mean how much is $200 a day over many years? That’s a lot.

So I actually ran into him and asked about her recently. She had a stroke while she was driving and died. I don’t know which one of those things killed her, and I don’t believe anyone else was hurt thank God.

But it’s a sad story, it’s just a lifestyle where, if you’re doing that much of it, there’s very likely lots of other things going on too.

36

u/petrichorax Sep 09 '26

If she's slamming a can every day that's almost certainly what gave her a stroke. Sustained heavy use is a death sentence.

11

u/Shark7996 Sep 09 '26

It sounds like they should have been refusing her service.

Working security for phish concerts at a camp ground. We were confiscating tanks like nobodies business (only banned substance at the campground due to the balloon debris left behind by some) Even after an all out assault on nitrous tanks we found hundreds that we never saw at night all used up in a neat pile in the garbage.

554

u/PNWBourbon Sep 09 '26

The nitrous mafia was a very real thing during my festival days. I remember watching a couple of Hells Angels beat the shit out of a couple tank freaks during Camp Bisco.

240

u/LawlzTaylor Sep 09 '26

What do you mean "was" I live in Philly and once a year the nitrous mafia takes over two blocks by the convention center for some weird music festival.

It's most definitely still a thing at festivals. I was chopping it up with a group of dudes that brought several van's filled with nitrous tanks. They passed out fliers throughout the campgrounds. Texted the number and they'd drop a pinned location right to them. They had a Wi-Fi hotspot for cashapp, zelle, venmo, etc. They were saying they clear about 80k profit each fest. Seemed to be running a pretty tight ship, honestly kinda cool. I get the stuff can be dangerous for folks, but I respected the hustle. They'd get busted by staff, get some of their tanks confiscated, relocate and re-open back up. Seen them at several festivals across the US.

31

u/Careless-Weather8877 Sep 09 '26

They have decoy tanks exactly so security will leave them alone and pull up multiple more when they cart off. I’ve seen it for at least 20 years. When you’re printing money it doesn’t matter to lose a shipment.

I'll have to check it out. I followed Phish with a buddy from college and his two hometown friends in the summer of '97 Great Went tour (30 day cross country trip in a conversion van). I only had tickets for like 10 of the 16 or so shows (I don't remember the exact number) so I hung out in the parking lot while the three of them went into some shows. Interesting times for sure. We sold garlic grill cheeses after each show too.

The best way to do nitrous is to get one balloon and walk away from the tank with it. Like, far away.

Then you do the balloon and have your moment, but by the time you walk halfway back to the tank you realize you don't want a refill.

They're just more illegal too. I'm pretty sure kratom also doesn't show up in employment drug tests either. It works very similar to an opioid with a few differences but the chemical structure isn't similar enough to any opioid they do test for.

Imagine how much cream they must have bought to go along with that.

Apparently a 600g nitrous canister is enough for 40-42 liters of heavy cream, or 80-84 liters of whipped cream. That looks like the equivalent of about 40 600g canisters, so that would be 1600 liters of cream or 3200 liters of whipped cream. They must have made a crazy number of sundaes.

I went to a rave with some friends once. On the last night, someone brought a can of whippets. I didn’t know what it was. I whispered asked the girl next to me because I didn’t want to appear out of the loop. She didn’t know either and quickly googled it. We both agreed we both were opting out of it. We didn’t read about the brain damage part, we just were like ugh the momentary high doesn’t sound worth ingesting a foreign chemical into our lungs.

The guy driving the car did it . . . While driving us home. He was trying to get sober and was for the whole rave weekend until then. He was like “fuck it I am going to do whippets!” Everyone cheered. At the time I didn’t know it caused momentarily unconsciousness.

We got home safely, I went to my tent shortly after. While I was falling asleep, the guy who brought whippets, was giving a toast to the driver congratulating him on stopping his sobriety. The driver countered and told a story of how he saw the whippets guy, take whippets and then crash his car into someone’s garage. He said it was “so cool.”

It was the first and last time I hung out with these people. I was the youngest in the group at 30, everyone else was 35+

these are 35+ year olds? Insane. It sounded like you were describing like 19-20 year old undeveloped brain behavior. Baffling. Glad you got out safe. As a raver i genuinely cant stand that type of reckless, dangerous shit

118

u/Grossredditgross Sep 09 '26

They all had like high paying blue collar jobs too. The guy that brought whippets left at 3 am so he could be home making pancakes with kids in the morning.

It was a huge wake up call, I was like I don’t want to be 35 doing party drugs with reckless people while my kid is asleep. It’s just not sustainable.

34

u/pmgoldenretrievers Sep 09 '26

I don’t want to be 35 doing party drugs with reckless people while my kid is asleep.

That's why I only have responsible friends and no kids. Much more fun to party that way.

762

u/RyanSmokinBluntz420 Sep 09 '26

Nitrous causes b12 deficiency in humans

→ More replies (121)

117

u/Brxken_Dxwn Sep 09 '26

Nitrous blocks your ability to make b12, long term use leads to nerve damage and can actually cause paralysis in some cases.

60

u/agent674253 Sep 09 '26

It is important to note that this is 'laughing gas' and in small amounts, on a non habitual basis, is ok. They use it at the dentists in lieu of general aesthesia.

Now, if you overuse it...

https://giphy.com/gifs/rffTf40cKoepq

26

u/Fragrant-Inside221 Sep 09 '26

They also use it for vasectomies. I was told we can either just numb you up and go for it or you can take some nitrous and numb you up. I took the nitrous.

If you think you're pissed, imagine your neighbors. They actually have to be there while their neighbor (you) rents out the house next to them for wild drug fueled parties every weekend.

106

u/shenanigans2day Sep 09 '26

As someone who has 3 airbnbs on my street now all within the past year, I do not feel bad for OP. Airbnbs are a plague on society. Moved to the middle of nowhere to get away from people :/

My wife and I sold a vacation beach cabin to someone who lied to us and ended up Airbnb-ing it. We actually sold it because the neighbors were A-holes on either side. It ended up giving us a warm little chuckle knowing what was in store for those jerk neighbors every weekend going forward.

25

u/aquoad Sep 09 '26

yeah my inconsiderate thoughtless neighbor spent a couple of years DIYing a renovation that sounded like he was sawing rebar with a dremel all day. Finally stopped and I thought it was over. Now he fucking airbnb's it so instead of construction noise it's drunk assholes whooping it up all night.

82

u/Jiggy90 Sep 09 '26

we were all rolling

Also something those ravers were definitely doing lmao

99

u/anti_worker Sep 09 '26

FYI lots of cleaning chemicals and soaps fluoresce just like body fluids.

47

u/Paranormal_Lemon Sep 09 '26

No the cleaning chemicals fluoresce about 100x more, that's most of what you are seeing, likely all of it.

37

u/Horskr Sep 09 '26

Yeah laundry detergents are actually designed that way to make the whites look whiter on sheets, towels, etc. along with like you said a lot of cleaning chemicals generally.

Unless you're seeing clear.. patterns, I would not be worried about your hotel room glowing under a black light.

So it says on these “do not inhale” but there’s flavors. So how do they get away with producing and selling these if everyone knows they’re just ruining peoples lives???

51

u/Yagoua81 Sep 09 '26

This is quite common, lots of products are for drug use with disclaimers. Just look at Bath Salts, they weren’t even bath salts.

31

u/Teleguide Sep 09 '26

When I visited Switzerland some people told me that well into the 90s there was a loophole in Switzerland that let weed be sold legally as long as it was marketed as an herbal scent. Health food stores and stuff would apparently have little cotton bags with weed in them hanging from the ceiling and they were called "all-natural scent bags" or something lol. Unfortunately the loophole was eventually closed.

they claim they are for whipped cream canisters, but the amount of nitrous oxide in a single can is enough to make A LOT of whipped cream. Like way more than even a restaurant would need

My experience with recreational drugs is pretty limited, but this is like an insane amount right? I thought whipits came in tiny little containers that fit in a whipped cream dispenser. Based on the hose caddy, these things look 2-3 feet tall. I wouldn’t expect my dentist to have this much nitrous oxide.

I saw a documentary once of a whippet dealer in the Netherlands his whole stock was probably less then this

I have had two friends die of lung cancer. Neither of which were smokers. One died at 52, the other at 50 but within a year of each other.

You know what they had in common?  Whippets in 2000's. Sucking that shit in weekend after weekend.  All the metals and whatever the hell else is in cheap nitrous cans.

I did it one night and didnt see any appeal whatsoever. Like inhaling some shit out of a random can from the cheapest place? Fuck that.... ill stick to my mexican brick weed with all its risks. At least I can fish out the random tire pieces and rodent leavings...

Anyway. I miss my friends. One was a coworker for 15 years and early gaming friend. Traveled the US together doing IT in the 90's early 2000's. So many games of AOE/c&c via crossover cables in bars and layovers...  best of fucking times.  Damn we had a great few years.

The other was a childhood neighbor friend who went through the hardest of times with me.  Both from broken families. Both homeless for a bit. Both made it out eventually.  Just to have that shit come crashing down on him with a new life, wife and daughter aged 2.  Fucking hell man.. some shit..

Miss ya Jbigdog and Beau.

So yeah. Fuck that whippet shit kids... it aint worth it.

years, YEARS, ago, when in college in Philly I was working at a local Wawa. One of my jobs was to restock the cooler during the summer times. I was working the evening/night shift as of course during day I was taking classes. Anyway, one time I went into the cooler the shift manager and his gf were back there, with the Whip cream cans doing Whippets. At the time I had no clue what they were doing, I really thought they were eating the cream from it. I just laughed and kept working. They looked so scared they were going to be in trouble.

I didn't give a fuck lol, I just wanted to get it done quick cus that shit was cold.

Unpopular opinion, air bnbs suck. Taking up all the real estate so nobody can buy. Then, the people that unfortunately live next door or across the street have to deal with people like that.

Shortly after finally purchasing my first house, the place next door was bought by a company and turned into an Airbnb. It's been such a headache since. I'm constantly picking up trash in my yard. Guests have parked in my driveway. Occasionally have a drunk person at my door super late trying to figure out why their keyless entry code isn't working on my keyless lock. I even once had a lady approach me, while I was in the middle of mowing my yard, to complain that her A/C wasn't working. It's unreal how stupid and inconsiderate some people are.

81

u/Ghost_of_a_Pale_Girl Sep 09 '26

I live in a tourist area. My last home was a rental on a street of mostly airBnBs. Most of the people who rented them were obnoxious and disrespectful of the people who live in town. So I don't think your opinion is all that unpopular.

→ More replies (4)

21

u/carolholdmycalls Sep 09 '26

As a responsible Airbnb user I also think they suck. Shitty owners who don’t maintain the property or properly clean for your arrival regardless of how many thousands of dollars you spend or the fact that you can’t check in till 4 but you gotta be out by 11, and then a whole list of work you gotta do before you leave. The system is broken.

Wait how can they straight up buy this and why are they flavored?

24

u/levelync Sep 09 '26

I went into a head shop in the US last week and they sell them there. It’s really bad. And half of them have like cartoon characters on them.

19

u/drillgorg Sep 09 '26

They're for making whipped cream. Makes me wonder what the split is on legitimate vs substance abuse use.

32

u/Fuzzandciggies Sep 09 '26

Any of it bought at a headshop and not a culinary supply store is definitely for being abused

27

u/mkultron89 Sep 09 '26

If you could show me one single legitimate culinary store selling this stuff I would legitimately be on the floor in shock. I’m not even saying it’s not possible I just think if you are taking the time to make your own whip cream, you aren’t gonna then add some bullshit fake ass flavouring to it, you would make it naturally.

24

u/Baelari Sep 09 '26

The ones for culinary use are unflavored, and fit in the palm of your hand. I have a box of those and a whipped cream charger from my Covid-era coffee bar hobby (I also got into baking. I got fat 🫠)

Automotive use, you’d have a bigger tank.

Large volume, goofy names, and flavors are all 100% recreational.
