M365 Angry users taking step against Microsoft after M365 OneDrive storage cut from 6TB to 2TB

This is a huge hit, but people will be hard pressed to replace 4 TB of non deep freeze cloud storage for near what they were paying for 365 shared consumer account
13
u/Turnip-Toffee 3d ago
for near what they were paying for 365
because MS used OneDrive to sweeten what they're actually selling, which is the O365 subscription. it was always artificially low. now they're pulling the rug after baiting people onto it.

u/Cpt_Soban 3d ago
After people lock in, and upload all of their files and photos to the cloud, they know people will be reluctant to put all that effort into moving elsewhere.
1
u/Ifalna_Shayoko 1d ago
Except the other options aren't even any cheaper.
5TB of Hetzner would cost me 13€ per month where I live (there is no 2TB package). That's 156€. M365Fam costs 80-ish € if you buy when it's on sale. *shrug*
Since I am still fine with 2TB and use Office, there is no competing offer from anyone that is actually better.
5
u/Muddybulldog 3d ago
This here. I don't even use Office but for a couple of spreadsheets that I could easily do in sheets or something similar. It's about 6TB for ~$100/yr.
3
u/TheJessicator 3d ago
Or just use the free version of the Microsoft Office apps in the web browser. No need to switch to a lesser product.
5
u/ethicalhumanbeing 3d ago
Well they can go fuck themselves because I’m not keeping my subscription. I’ll just buy offline storage and pirate MS Office.

u/Shotokant 3d ago
Mine is coming up for renewal and when I went to cancel it they offered me two more months of family. It's only 160 nzd a year but sod that. I self host so I can roll my own for the family. Open cloud seems to be the choice.
1
u/perentie110 2d ago
I just installed open cloud on my server. It's great, simple and you can integrate it with Collabora so you get the office editing features.
1
u/Shotokant 2d ago edited 2d ago
Sounds cool. How did you implement it? I was looking at a nuc running proxmox on a 2tb local ssd. That should be enough for the whole family. I did want it saving to my nas but it's too old and only has nfs 4.0 not 4.1 Although it's suggested I can run a job to replicate the one loud store to the nas periodically as a secondary backup.
2
u/perentie110 2d ago
I have a Truenas server with 50Tb of storage. I just installed open cloud as an app and then configured Collabora. The dataset used gets backed up off site to Backblaze. Works great as a family collaboration tool.

u/jrewillis 3d ago
Stacked subscriptions mean the change only occurs at renewal - I've stacked until the end of 2029. So according to their terms the new rules only apply at renewal after April / may 2027.
My renewal date on my account is 19th December 2029.
Worth a shot if people don't want to loose the 6tb storage for now.
16
u/PhantomOfKrankor42 3d ago
lol you didn’t get 6TB. You got one and needed to spoof accounts to access the other siloed 1TBs.
10
u/ethicalhumanbeing 3d ago
Im splitting a family licence with the family and each one of use use their own 1TB, just like it was intended. This reduction to 2TB fucked us right in the ass because there is no way it’s enough for 6 members.
0
u/PhantomOfKrankor42 3d ago
That sucks, I’m sorry.
2
u/ethicalhumanbeing 3d ago
Thanks. I’ll and move to offline storage myself because I’m sick and tired of these services which keep changing for the worse.

I know, that’s why I’ve been delaying this, unfortunately I’ll have to pull the trigger regardless. I’ll try to source some second hand material.

u/gfolder 3d ago
What's the mechanism thru which they did this?
3
u/PhantomOfKrankor42 3d ago
The way Microsoft 365 Family worked was the subscriber got 1TB of storage in OneDrive. You could then invite other people to your subscription and they would get all the office apps and their own 1TB of storage connected to their Microsoft account, up to five additional people, for a total of 6TBs of storage. Everyone complaining that they took individual storage down by 4GBs was either spoofing accounts to get more storage for themselves or truly had five family members on their subscription all using up a terabyte of cloud storage.
Not defending the change, not saying it’s a good change, just pointing out that at no point was one account getting 6TB with this subscription.
3
u/gfolder 3d ago
Yep definitely a shitty corpo move
4
u/PhantomOfKrankor42 3d ago
Meh. In my personal situation my storage is effectively doubling. I share my sub with my wife and high schooler and neither of them use the storage at all.
0
u/Muddybulldog 3d ago
Create 5 accounts, add them to the family, share the root of each account with the main account. 6TB, done.
3
u/dkh 3d ago
It's baffling that some people don't grasp this. Having 6 1TB buckets that can be combined anyway you like is vastly superior to 1 2TB bucket.
Hell, the separate buckets were actually helpful for a lot of work flows where you want to guarantee availability.
3
u/alabasterskim 3d ago
I genuinely don't understand how we've entered a world in which people can argue, in earnest, that 6 < 2.
3
u/Turnip-Toffee 3d ago
lol you didn’t get 6TB
you family definitely did.
needed to spoof accounts
no need to do any such thing if those are real accounts to begin with
3
u/JustaFoodHole 3d ago
This just shows how wrong it is to depend on cloud storage for all your data. Is it worth it to now have to manage two sets of data, cloud and NAS, or just put it all on a NAS and get as much storage as you want, with your own probably better backups. Most people don't even have a backup of their cloud, because they think Microsoft is doing that.

Probably there is some part in the terms of use which say "we deserve the rights to do whatever we want".
3
u/PublicBetaVersion 3d ago edited 3d ago
It doesn’t work like that. When they increased the family price by 30% because they bundled Copilot with the subscription, which nobody asked for, they were forced to offer existing users the option to keep their old cheaper subscription without Copilot. At least that was the case in EU. If the terms and conditions you agreed to break existing laws they become void.
And I remember reading that somewhere else, maybe in Australia, it was considered false advertising and they were forced to reimburse users who didn’t have the option to keep the old subscription. I expect the same backlash now if the article is true.

anyone who just renewed or purchased a plan recently?
no because you'd keep what you just renewed at until the end of your current renewal period, it only kicks in the next time there's a renewal, so they have a very solid argument to say that they offered you the new deal before you made the purchase and you accepted it.
this is more of a consumer dick move than anything illegal, they're well within their rights to change future product offerings.

I fucking hate Microsoft. Everything is a major pain in the ass. Getting storage, using the clouds, saving files to any folders. It remembers and trys to force you into paths you don’t want to take very much in the same manner as apples autocorrect/being able to select text on a phone has gone. None of these little helpful steps are ever going in any direction of help, they remember some one off move you made to save somewhere and the computer will not forget that but will forget the tasks you’ve done 5000 times.
This shit is getting worse, not better. Everything is bloated and convoluted I hate even turning the Pc on
Stop suggesting things on programs it uses up half my fucking memory and burns my time. I learned how to use a computer very well in the late 90’s and by 2010 they just started hacking everything up and it’s nearly impossible to use
Give me my fucking Word, excel and outlook back, let me kill Microsoft edge you rapacious fucks
Oh- and one of the biggest tech companies in the world- ZERO CUSTOMER SUPPORT

Can’t say I’m affected (yet) with a 1TB plan, but I’ll take this as a second canary and make my search for a new platform more than casual.
First canary was when they bumped the price for the AI additions and it was opt-out not opt-in. Really bad look

I got the email last night and the storage change will be a while for me, so there's plenty of time to find an alternative before being impacted.
"This change will apply after your first renewal after May 2nd, 2027" which means December 2027 for me.

At this point, if you're a consumer still using microsoft services, this is on you. There are many alternatives that are much better and cheaper. Especially with cloud storage and collaboration tools.

u/radikalkarrot 3d ago
I am looking for a reliable and cheaper alternative for 6tb of storage a year, is there anything you would recommend?

I went with pCloud. I self-host but I replicate to pCloud for public access and that works good for me. They have Windows and Mac clients so the integration is pretty good. I have migrated mostly to Linux, though - hence the self-hosting.
I bought a lifetime 2-TB from pCloud, which was a little pricey upfront but no more monthly fees and with dropping all of the Office subscriptions and going with Libre Office and Open Office, I am completely satisfied and have no issues. I just smiled when the e-mail arrived yesterday, knowing that I literally cancelled my subscription last week after finishing my data migration out of OneDrive.

While very cool and a genuine alternative, it doesn’t match the price point for 6tb that op was on about. The current Microsoft offering is hard to beat with what they offer, which is why they’re changing it I guess.
1
u/Turnip-Toffee 3d ago
nobody can beat the price because MS always used it as a "loss" leader to keep you in their ecosystem. even at the new price, it's still at least a little better than comparative services. that's probably not an accident.

u/thefizzlee 3d ago
Microsoft is still the cheapest by far for me. Onedrive family costs me 33 euros per year for 1tb, 100gb mail storage and their office suite. For reference my 200gb icloud sub is the same annually. So this is a bit of a short sided and bad take honestly. Google one is even more expensive, Proton drive is also alot more expensive and we Transfer also. I don't really see what cloud storage subscription is cheaper that 365 for me.
8
u/skeet_scoot 3d ago
OneDrive works excellent for me and I still love the full Office suite for my documents.
It’s a little pricey, but I think it’s well-worth it.

u/LazyMagicalOtter 3d ago
Enlighten us. We are a family of 6, using almost 4.5TB combined, we pay around 35USD anually, total. That's less than 50 cents per person, per month, for 1TB each.
What better option do you know that gives old people automatic photo upload from their phones, that much space, and is that cheap?
2
u/wubalubadubdub55 3d ago
How are you getting 365 family for $35/year? Could you please share the link where you buy it from?
1
u/Turnip-Toffee 3d ago
not sure about the exact price, but in the ballpark: the only legit way would be corpo home use licences

I tried switching to Google Drive, I know -- not much better in that aspect but, I gave it a shot. But, the issue I ran into was once I had all my files backed up from my main machine, I installed it on one of my laptops to access my files much like you can with OneDrive but, though I had access to my files, it also duplicated my entire backup folders as a 'new machine' instead of just syncing to the main desktop backup files. OneDrive seamlessly does this... No matter what computer or device I use, I just have access to my files and it's not duplicating or filing things as a new 'device' and backing up everything again....

u/Turnip-Toffee 3d ago
There are many alternatives that are much better and cheaper.
there are many good reasons to get away from MS and the other big corpos asap. but that's just objectively false. there's a reason they still have such a strong stranglehold, the competitive moat (which wasn't obtained all above-board, but bitching about it doesn't change reality) is very real.

Man I shouldn’t of pre-paid for three years of the family shared subscription. Just got my family off of Google Photos and iOS Photos for a worse experience platform just to get screwed. Might as well get the 5tb storage that comes with Gemini Pro instead now.

Interested to see how they compensate those of us with several years left on our subscriptions that paid for 6TB. Seems like a theft of service, false advertising and bate a switch. Not sure what the proper legal consumer protection would best apply, but I will likely register a complaint with Department of Consumer Protection as I'm fairly certain I'm bound by arbitration clause.

is this extended to edu.bn account?
1
u/Western-Sentence-739 3d ago
If it's a business or educational account, which yours seems to be, then no, this is for consumer level family shared 365 account
-3
u/mayuan11 3d ago
I jumped ship when they increased the bill by 50% last year. I can tell you the high seas are smooth and calm.
9
u/hawseepoo 3d ago
The high seas for cloud storage? lol
-4
u/mayuan11 3d ago
There is a ton of services that offer free cloud storage. Google alone offers 15G. Have you never been on the internet?
8
u/hawseepoo 3d ago
That’s not the “high seas”
EDIT: Also, no one using 6TB of storage on M365 is going to distribute their files across the 400 15GB accounts it would take to replace the subscription.
2
u/TheRealFlowerChild 3d ago
Also the convenience of being able to switch between laptops and having the desktop be the exact same is such a perk. I have a gaming desktop and a light weight laptop and having documents and PDFs cloud saved is great and it makes setting up new laptops easier. Only company that rivals that is Apple but I’m not on a MacBook budget.
-1
u/mayuan11 3d ago
I wasn't talking about the cloud storage, I was talking about the price increase surpassing the value of the software. The free storage options work great. Microsoft brings nothing to the table with the subscription
3
u/hawseepoo 3d ago
This entire thread is about Microsoft reducing account storage from 6TB to 2TB, not about the non-storage-related benefits that Microsoft brings to the table.
The cloud storage is the focus here

This is the price you pay for convenience rather than using bit of a brain and learn how do create your own local storage and in the long run you'll end up far cheaper and more in control of your stuff.
