my laptop has an intel i5 12450h nvidia rtx 2050 and 16gb ram

i am using cachy os with kde plasma and the latest nvidia drivers

has anyone with similar hardware faced this issue and found a fix i would really like to play forza horizon 6 again because i miss the active online world

1st pic: what it looks like in areas with less lighting (I'd say it okay-ish) 2nd pic: what it looks like in areas with more lighting (definitely looks weird)

Mind you, I did some settings tweaking between 1st and 2nd pic.

But anyways, it still does not look right. Any guesses what might be the problem?

Using nvidia-driver-595 on a 5090.

tech support wanted Linux barely using any memory or VRAM [Linux Mint]

Now this sounds stupid as it should be a good thing, however my problem is that it makes shader cache times UNBEARABLY slow, and according to BTOP I’m only using 655Mb out of 8GB VRAM when doing the pre-cacheing.

What makes it even weirder is steam is telling me that it’s downloading the files at 25Mbs but it feels more like 2Mbs, and on top of that it’s telling me that there is 0 disk usage.

As for my system specs, I’m running an RTX2060 Super, Ryzen 5 9600X and 32GB memory @6000Mhz (CL36). And as for WiFi, it’s unfortunately wireless as the router is downstairs so no Ethernet for me :/

tech support wanted Trying to ditch Windows completely. Struggling to make my most played games run smoothly.

I'm trying to move all my gaming to Linux. My setup is particular. I use a virtual machine that runs in my home server (KVM + QEMU + Libvirt). And the Linux distro I use is NixOS. I install the games in one of three locations. The main drive (which is a qcow2 file) or one of two shares of my home server that I mount as Virtiofs filesystems in the virtual machine. I've tried every location for the games.

The games I'm trying to run with good performance and failing at that are The Binding of Isaac and Elden Ring: Nightreign. Both with mods. In Isaac I use a bunch of quality of life mods. Nothing that adds characters, floors, bosses, enemies... And not using Repentogon. For Nightreign I use the More Map Variations & Weapons Mod.

The Binding of Isaac takes 15-20 minutes just to start. And then, during gameplay, there are slowdowns and micro freezes anytime something new happens. I guess it's shader compilation, but if it's that, the cache of shaders is not working because it happens again any time the game starts again. I launch it with gamemoderun %command% in Steam.

Elden Ring: Nightreign has just low FPS. 15-20 fps is the average. But my CPU rarely goes above 60% and my GPU doesn't go above 50% either. I launch it with "/home/bluesialia/.local/share/goverlay/gameconfig/ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN/fgmod" gamemoderun me3 launch -p "/mnt/fast/More Map Variations & Weapons Mod/MMV 2.1.7-hotfix1 & Weapons Mod.me3" #%command% in Steam.

I haven't tried any "big" game besides those and Heroes of the Storm. Heroes of the Storm runs via Lutris and works fine. Well, not as well as in Windows, but playable.

I don't know what to try. My user is part of the gamemode group, I've installed the games in the three locations to compare. I'm using the versions of Proton that are recommended by the community for each game...

Anybody has any idea of what I can try? Thank you.

Specs:

Operating System: NixOS 26.05 KDE Plasma Version: 6.6.6 KDE Frameworks Version: 6.26.0 Qt Version: 6.11.1 Kernel Version: 7.1.4 (64-bit) Graphics Platform: Wayland Processors: 12 × AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 12-Core Processor Memory: 48 GiB of RAM (47,0 GiB usable) Graphics Processor: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Manufacturer: QEMU Product Name: Standard PC (Q35 + ICH9, 2009) System Version: pc-q35-10.2

Edit: I posted to r/VFIO with some more info and benchmarks of my VM.

tech support wanted BG3 looks washed out compared to windows

EDIT2:

SOLVED!

Humiliatingly, it seems like this _was_ actually down to game settings. Based on numerous recommendations with regards to FSR, just to double check, I enabled it on Linux to see if it actually produces the lower res effect. When I disabled it, I noticed that AA sharpness was at the bottom. Once I put it on max and adjusted the gamma to be a little darker, it was practically perfect.

I made an honest effort before this post to make sure the settings were identical among the two systems. I believe I set the AA sharpness to max, but I can't say with a 100% certaintly. It could've been a visual slider bug that enabling/disabling FSR unearthed. Or maybe I was a big dum dum and didn't actually check.

Nevertheless, I'm very thankful for all the replies, the community response was amazing and I learned a bunch of things for next time that were not directly related to this issue, like monitor monitor color profiles, checking for HDR settings, checking explicitly for wayland being enabled, etc.

Original post:

I've been dual booting cachyos and windows for a while now, but I recently decided to try to go linux-exclusive. What kept me back so far is that some games, specifically BG3 looks washed out compared to windows.

My hardware is decent, I have an AMD Radeon 9070 XT and an AMD Ryzen 5 7600, and I play on a 1440p 180hz monitor. Performance is perfectly fine, its the washed out colors, and possibly the upscaling-like effect is what I want to fix. I diffed the graphics settings file (/path/to/AppData/Local/Larian Studios/Baldur's Gate 3/graphicSettings.lsx) in between my windows and linux installs, and they are practically identical.

I'm launching through Heroic Games Launcher, the game is on GOG. Here are some of the relevant values from the logs:

OS: CachyOS Linux 7.1.5-1-cachyos (linux)
CPU: 12x AMD Ryzen 5 7600 6-Core Processor
GPU: Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 9070 XT
Memory: 32.71 GB (used: 3.46 GB)
Proton version: proton-cachyos-11.0-20260703
Target exe is specifically set to bg3_dx11.exe

Any help would be much appreciated!

tech support wanted Random 1-second system freezes/micro-stutters on CachyOS (KDE Wayland)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone,

I'm having a frustrating issue with my CachyOS laptop where the system randomly freezes for about one second at a time. It happens completely randomly—whether I'm gaming, watching a movie/show on an external TV, or even just moving my mouse around on the desktop.

I've attached a video I recorded on my phone so you can see exactly what the stutter looks like.

I've already tried a few potential solutions I found online, but nothing has worked so far, and the constant micro-stutters are driving me crazy. Has anyone experienced something similar or know what might be causing this?

Here are my specs:

- Laptop: HP Pavilion 15-ec1001nx

- CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 4800H

- GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650

- RAM: 16GB

- OS: CachyOS x86_64

- Kernel: Linux 7.1.2-3-cachyos

- DE: KDE Plasma 6.7.1 (Wayland)

- BIOS: F.33 (15.33)

Edit: Here is my log link if anyone can help (https://paste.cachyos.org/p/4588a2a.log)

Using PS4 CachyOS FFv2, latest Proton-cachyos, assuming newish video drivers. Launching through steam. All other graphics seem fine it's just faces that are terrifying. Please help as this is literally the only issue playing this game with this setup. I've tried changing every setting and tried most every Proton version that launches the game. Bug not present on my pc with the exact same folder copied over.

tech support wanted RESHADE SUPPORT FOR VULKAN GAMES ON LINUX

Post image
586 Upvotes

ok let me explain what issue i have clearly .

i want a clean easy way to run reshade on vulkan games that run on LUNIX OS .

to be more specific steamOs on steam deck .

i used this github page as a guide since some dev where exchanging info

https://github.com/Ishidawg/LeShade/issues/16

the game that iam testing this on is Detroit becomes human since its a vulkan exclusive title

this video shows a workaround on linux but required heroic launcher and dosent work on steam deck as one of the comments stated

https://youtu.be/bkvsivxoZGo?si=kh77bV7YbcgOgQmh

so what did i do ?

1- i downloaded the official latest version of reshade and installed via Vulkan option ( no DX).

2- i extracted the reshade64.dll from the reshade installer .

3- i extracted ( vulkan -1) file from VulkanRT installer and place it on the game system32 folder

4- i added this launch option .

WINEDLLOVERRIDES="vulkan-1=n"

all files i used( one folder) in this link :

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Wbyjk0dgA-7o9FBZ40yFJIeaeeScnNJ3/view?usp=drivesdk

the result :

nothing the game launch but reahade dosent load at all. 😭

if you wanna test this quick this is a few Mb small game on steam called BROTATO also uses vulkan . you can do test on

tech support wanted 45% performance loss in Linux, a bit too much?

Thumbnail

Yes, it's a DX12 game so some nvidia tax is expected, but ~45% is a bit wild, no? Event tho it shows 120+fps it feels much worse as the frame times or so inconsistent and get even worse in combat. If I could get to run smoothly at 60fps I'd be happy, but I can't even get that.

It has a gold rating on protondb so I guess it should run better? I did try the launch commands people posted there but nothing made the game run better or more stable. I also tried different proton versions and kernels but unfortunately no improvement.
I just don't know what else to try. Any ideas?

Why do you think open-source games never took off?

Sure, there are some open-source game engines, but not really any major games. It would be cool if there were more open-source, community-made games.

tech support wanted CachyOS small quirks starting to get to me, opinions on other distros like Nobara?

I have been on cachy for like 6 months and gaming has been great. However, I am running into small quirks here and there that take a couple of hours of troubleshooting that have started to become really annoying.

Artifacting only on desktop after sleep https://discuss.kde.org/t/artefacts-and-screen-flashing/49941/2?utm_source=chatgpt.com

Logitech mouse scroll and regular sensitivity all over the place after sleep restart

Logitech webcam mic not working

Monitor switching annoyances

Im sure there are many others I haven't mentioned over time. These are probably not enough to make me stop using it but was wondering if something like nobara is less tinkery? Or straight fedora. I really liked how all the gaming stuff was behind a simple install.

7800x3d

4tb nvme

9070xt

edit: This will be for about 80% gaming as I mostly use my mac for everything else.

tech support wanted Generally why is Ubuntu taboo here?

I am a newbie Linux gamer and I used to have Linux Mint (Which is Ubuntu based I believe?) on my 1050ti card. Other than Minecraft it worked horribly and nearly double as worse than Windows 10 did. I figured it's because I used an old nvidia gpu. Now I have a Vega 56 and an I5-10400f and I want to try again after rage quiting windows once more. Yes I want to game on it. I looked around the subreddjt and everyone is recommending Bazzite or Endeavour or Catchy or even Nobara but nobody is mentioning anything Ubuntu based. Why? From what research has told me Ubuntu has the widest range of supported software in their appstore thingy and kbuntu also exists with it's Discover app so I figured it would be awesome for a newbie gamer. So is Ubuntu really that bad that nobody is even recommending it?

Edit: Okay okay, you all convinced me that Ubuntu is on path to become the new microsoft. Ngl I was sold on Ubuntu ungil reading the comments. But what Distro SHOULD I use with an older system like mine? I5 10400f and a Vega 56. Vega is not very popular so it's hard to find threads about drivers for it. I need something that comes preinstalled with the ability to update my Vega drivers. Optionally also something with a good 'appstore' or something I can download 'Discover' on. If somebody knows a good os for that please reply 🤣

tech support wanted Anyone else having hourly pageflip timed out crashes but only when gaming...? Any fixes..?

I have a 2025 Asus ROG Strix Scar 16 gaming laptop.

- RTX 5080

- Core Ultra 9 275HX

- 32GB RAM

I realize this is a bug in the Nvidia driver but it is driving me insane. Is there any way to get around this issue? Hell, I'll even take a 50% hit to max fps for a fix if it comes down to it. I literally cannot game on my laptop like this. I can play for like an hour and then I'll crash. I literally have to hourly reboot during every game session holding up my friends all the time because they have to wait for me to reboot...

Please tell me there is a way... And no, X11 isn't an option. Sorry. But I need Wayland due to my dual monitor setup with this thing. Internal monitor as my secondary and an LG Ultragear 27GR95QE-B as my external primary.

Edit: I am on PikaOS as my choice of distro. It's based on Debian-Unstable (Sid). It's using KDE Plasma 6.7.4.

tech support wanted Ryzen APU: Major gaming performance drop across Linux distributions vs Windows

Thumbnail
gallery
95 Upvotes

TL;DR Gaming performance on my Ryzen 5 6600H laptop is significantly lower on Linux than on Windows across different distributions, desktop environments, and kernels, and standard troubleshooting steps have made zero difference.

Hey everyone,

I’m hitting a wall here and looking for deeper insights from people who might have dealt with platform-specific firmware, ACPI, or power-budgeting quirks on AMD mobile chips.

To save everyone time: basic troubleshooting steps won’t solve this. I have spent days running extensive diagnostic and tuning sessions (diving deep into logs, profiling and abusing the shit out of Gemini), and the issue persists across clean setups.

On Windows, the laptop delivers solid, expected frame rates on the Radeon 660M. On Linux, games run with noticeably lower frame rates as if the APU power budget is artificially constrained or the GPU/CPU clocks are fighting each other for power differently than they do under Windows drivers.

Looking through forums and Reddit, I noticed some users with similar mobile AMD hardware report this exact same severe performance gap without ever finding a resolution, while others with nearly identical hardware claim near 1:1 parity with Windows out of the box.

What I've tried:

  • Different kernels and distributions (CachyOS with optimized schedulers/kernels, Fedora Workstation with stock kernels)
  • Changing power & performance profiles (tuned profiles, D-Bus state switching and setting cpu EPP values manually)
  • BIOS tweaks (set vram to 4gb, toggled Performance Boost on and off)

Hardware & System Specs:

Device: Xiaomi Book 14 Pro (2022)

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 6600H

iGPU: AMD Radeon 660M

RAM: 16 GB LPDDR5

Storage: SSD

Current OS: Fedora 44 Workstation (previously tested on CachyOS HyprLand and KDE, tried lts kernel and CachyOS kernel)

Kernel and driver: 6.19.10-300.fc44.x86_64, amd-pstate-epp

BIOS: XMARB4B0P0D0D (Xiaomi Book Pro 14 2022)

Example: Valheim on low 800p. Tried different versions of Proton, Linux runtime and they are running around ~20fps. Windows runs at stable 60fps. It's one example, but I've tried different games and it's more or less 50-80% less fps

Edit: formatting
