How?

Firstly AI is built from copyright theft, FOSS is generally very avoidant of copyright theft, the idea is generally to allow people to decide what something they created is used for.

Secondly, the end goal for AI companies is to sit between you and everything you need to do, like uber do with taxis or door dash with deliveries, but for every single interaction you have with the outside world. The subscription fee and user penetration these companies are aiming for, it's genuinely horrifying. We should not be indirectly supporting a world where you pay openAI $2000+ a month to live in a frictionless AI vacuum.

To be honest, I would steal as much back from AI as possible since it is based on theft. Some people don't use Meta's open-source because Meta bad. Meta is bad. But I get at least partial payment back by using their usable open-source software where possible, if it works. And I can still try my best to block their ads and avoid leaking data.

You don't steal back from AI (it doesn't belong to AI), you just encourage it more. That's a weird cope.

Do I if I don't give them money?

Yes? Using software generated with AI = encouraging AI. Same way you encourage facebook if you just have an account there and don't pay - not saying you do, but just in general.

Not really. Facebook mines data if I use their services to target ads. And to show ads. If I run AI locally on my basement, no, it is pure take without giving nothing back for the AI firms. And only improving the Linux kernel.

Those models are distilled from larger models and would not exist without them. And you are still stealing from all the people whose data contributed to those larger models. Feel free to disagree if it helps you feel better, but it's not some moral high ground.

Yes, if everyone else uses just distilled models, big AI companies would go to bankrupt badly. And no, I don't feel bad, at least on my usage. Models have been trained on open-source code, including mine. At least getting something back from that free work.
