To make matters worse, some submitters rely on AI to generate replies during the review process. I even received a response that accidentally pasted the LLM’s instructions intended for the user.

Surely this should be a bannable offense from "contributing" to GNOME Shell Extensions? Going to stay away from the "AI good, AI bad" debate but not even talking to the reviewer in your own words and copy-pasting replies generated by LLM sounds insane and just...rude? I have seen this happen in Flathub's issue tracker too.

On a sidenote, there is so much vibe coding happening from the "community" in the GNOME space, whether it is apps or shell extensions.

Sadly it's pretty easy to circumvent even if ban was to be implemented. And now it's more and more harder to distinguish between vibe-coded and ai assisted code.

It's harder if you look at just the code. But I have had success "poisoning" the AGENTS file to make the AI snitch on the user if the human was minimally involved. It'll put it right in the PR and it's an easy close and ignore.

What about when people use Ai to translate to English?

I wouldn’t call that generating the reply.

The cases they’re talking about are people who often genuinely aren’t even reading what the maintainers are writing, or if they are, aren’t able to understand it on a technical level, so they’re just asking their LLM to write a reply.

This problem of AI code flooding the zone extends way beyond Gnome or even open source. It's happening in software projects and companies everywhere. Not all of it is slop, but much of it is, and sorting through it all is a huge task. Which makes me wonder if instead of putting programmers out of work as is predicted, AI will create even more work for us, but in the form of wading through reams of AI output.

what kind of programming skills do you actually need for this
