Software Release Euro Office has actual releases on their DesktopEditors github
https://github.com/Euro-Office/DesktopEditors/releasesThe DesktopEditors github repo seems to have actual releases now, with multiple download options for various linux distros, plus Windows and MacOS. From brief usage with my existing documents, it's still got a bit of work that needs to get done, but honestly I'm happy to have it finally be released in some usable capacity that doesn't require manually building!

Fuck yeahhhh, those "few weeks" took forever! Gonna try it out today!

Downloaded, and while it was to be expected.. I am already pissed off that nextcloud is the only supported cloud environment

I'm waiting for a flatpak and flathub, but it'll be nice to have an option that actually supports open source contributions from the community.
OnlyOffice was basically open source in name only, so I see this fork as a positive thing overall.

I still don't understand the reasoning for that project, creating a native Office suite in a non memory-safe language, like C++, without proper sandboxing in 2026 is just mindblowingly ignorant. Even worse a large part of the document handling is barely using any modern C++ and operating on raw strings and pointers. Just ignoring the last two decades of security and safety regarding such Apps won't end well and It'll be even worse with LLMs assisting attackers to find bugs.

They didn't create it. They forked OnlyOffice, which is liked and used by many as it is more familiar in UI/UX to MS Office users (or you could say it has an interface that seems to have been designed in this decade instead of in the 2000s). Which regrettably has a original developer and maintainer with strong Russian roots and dubious coding practices. They have committed to cleaning up the codebase. All of this can be read on their Github page.
I for one am happy, as its UX for me is far preferable over LibreOffice or Collabora (though the latter seems to be improving) but I didn't trust the developer which kept me from switching to it.

I'm well aware of that, the issue is that Euro Office has Nextcloud involved and their clear target is getting sweet money from the EU's push to go away from MS Office, which is good, but If the money goes to the wrong people It'll poisons the opinion on open source software and such.

u/Linuksoid 2d ago
with strong Russian roots
He's Latvian, many Latvians have Russian roots
Plus someone having Russian roots is suddenly an issue nowadays? That's like the Nazis during WW2 saying someone has Jewish roots. That wouldn't fly nowadays, now would it.

u/SoilMassive6850 2d ago
Pretty sure I saw you white knighting onlyoffice with similar fervor when EuroOffice was announced? How affiliated are you with the project?
-2
u/Linuksoid 2d ago
I am not affiliated. I just find it funny that EuroOffice is being made when Latvia is literally in Europe. Way to grift government grants lol
12
u/adamkex 2d ago
You can read the reasoning here https://github.com/Euro-Office
-1
u/dsffff22 2d ago
Yes I read the reasoning very well there as we want tax money from the upcoming push to sovereign software and I fear here that the money goes to the wrong people. Euro-Office will have weekly attacks If It is deployed in a wider scale, because the code is just so bad. I'm quite suprised by the amount of downvotes, because this can taint the open source image and push to sovereign infrastructure heavily.

u/adamkex 2d ago
Your concern regarding security is valid. What is in your opinion the alternative? Creating a completely new office suite in a memory safe language? The software should run both online and offline? I assume it should be able to have full compatibility with Microsoft formats but default to ODT? Perhaps use (or even copy) the design language of Euro-Office's UI?
0
u/dsffff22 1d ago
The concern is not just valid It's a total blocker to use that software, they didn't even make any attempt to making It partially secure as there's no fuzzing, no asan not attempt to make use of modern/'safer' C++ features. Without LLM you could get away from It, but with the LLM-era of software security you can't get away with It. So yes create a new office core in a memory safe language or sandbox It properly they do neither.
2
u/adamkex 1d ago
What do you think is the solution we should be using today?
1
u/dsffff22 1d ago
Run LibreOffice properly Sandboxed for now, work on a new document core library in Rust or any other language which can provide memory safety and interoperability If you can find one.

Isn't libreoffice the de facto go to tho? Between open office and libre my understanding is libre came a lot further and is people's preferred option but and large. So forking open office to ne at least seems... Pointless?
28
u/goldrunout 2d ago
It's a fork of onlyoffice, not open office.
2
u/xxCorsicoxx 2d ago
My misunderstanding, cheers!
Isn't only office lithuanian or something?

They have a shell company in Latvia to obfuscate their origins but were based fully in Russia. The company reestablished in Singapore after the start of the Ukraine war, but is still under Russian ownership:

It sounds like EuroOffice is online (like Google Docs). LibreOffice isn't yet.
4
u/nhaines 2d ago
Yes it is. I've been running it for at least 8 years. Probably more than that. (Collabora develops the online option, but Collabora is one of the major developers for LibreOffice.)
0
u/Sharp-Debate-523 2d ago
Collabora's "free" option is only for development and testing according to this page. https://www.collaboraonline.com/subscriptions/
1
u/nhaines 2d ago
It's free for small deployments, without support. But it integrates very, very well with Nextcloud. (I need to pin down a dev soon maybe to find out what's going on with EuroOffice and LibreOffice Online.)
1
u/Sharp-Debate-523 2d ago
Does it have a normal FOSS license?
2
u/nhaines 2d ago
I mean, it's a fork of LibreOffice, so yes...
2
u/Sharp-Debate-523 1d ago edited 6h ago
It's not a license you'd find here https://opensource.org/licenses (the standard licenses)
The license is here https://www.collaboraonline.com/end-user-license-and-subscription-agreement/ It's multiple pages

This whole "Soverign tech" and "breaking free from the US" is so funny for me when Europe continues bending over backwards for the US by giving it Greenland and then opening its own strategic oil reserves. In that context, this whole tech stuff seems like cheap populism
Wake me when Europe actually breaks free of the US, bans MS products, fully switches from windows, leaves NATO and kicks out US occupation forces from European territory
11
u/AnythingOk5 2d ago
It's so funny to me when Americans make fun of Europeans while living next to a fucking datacenter that sounds like a million hornet nests.
-3
u/Linuksoid 2d ago
Would rather live next to a datacenter than live in denial that EU has any sort of sovereignty at this point lmao
Imagine trying to break free of "dependence on Russia" to only become more dependent on the US (which is arguably worse)
The EU is never beating vassal allegations at this rate
8
u/AnythingOk5 2d ago
We have the freedom to use whatever we want. You live in denial that you have freedom but you get fined for planting a tree in front of your house.
-1
u/Linuksoid 2d ago
freedom to use whatever you want
continues using US tech
continues bending over backwards for US demands
LOL
6
u/Thermawrench 2d ago
US (worse)
Russia is the one murderings its way across Ukraine, and will if successful attack the baltic countries.
-6
u/Linuksoid 2d ago
According to EU media lmao
There is no evidence that Russia wants this.
Its hilarious that in EU media its Schrodinger's Russia - simultaneously too weak to beat Ukraine and too strong to take over the Baltics against NATO
We do have evidence that US wanted to attack Europe, because it threatened to take Greenland. And yet EU bent over backwards to accomodate them

No one gave US greenland.
The US got free access to all of Greenland to do with what it wants, while it formally remains under Denmark. So its essentialy American for all intents and purposes.
Like the US threatened to take Greenland by force...and Denmark still made a deal. Imagine any other country doing the same.
If it makes it easier, imagine Russia or China threatening to take Greenland...and then Denmark making a deal and allowing them to do what it wants when they should not have made any deals after that
Europe is actively switching to Linux, away from Microsoft products.
Is that why Microsoft is expanding its operations in the EU and funding EU ai? Also is that why EU governments are expanding MS office presence in many states?
Being part of NATO is strategic
Not really. Making Russia part of the EU and then making a security arrangement with Russia, under the Russian nuclear umbrella will guarentee European security.
Think about a EU from Lisbon to Vladivostok, with Russian resources and Industry, German money and knowhow. It would be unstoppable
9
u/BourbonXenon 2d ago
That's really cute
-6
u/Linuksoid 2d ago
Its cute when EU talks about being "sovereign" and then bends over backwards for the US LOL

u/Kingwolf4 2d ago
Too late
We already have art craft.
7
u/Longjumping-Hair3888 2d ago
is it any good have you tried the 'word' one?
8
u/lord_of_the_keyboard 2d ago
It isn't any good, it's vybe coded and broke with at least half of my documents
-11
u/Kingwolf4 2d ago
Yup its actually good. Its built in rust, from the ground up
UI looks good, is small in size.
Its still pre alpha though, but the speed of development is full throttle. Try it for the first time in a week, and in about a month or 2 it should be mostly usable, even the in deep bits
16
u/xxCorsicoxx 2d ago
Reasonably can you trust an AI slop project to work stable, only do what it says on the tin, not have bizarre things not working in bizarre ways, and the project to actually be maintained (and maintainable) 3,5,10 years ahead?
Impressive what they could slop into existence but the way they don't disclose shit, the rate at which they churn out changes, and working in development myself, I am highly skeptical of these projects beyond kind of being impressive and novelty, I don't expect a stable usable maintainable thing. And the biggest promoter here on reddit is a chud calling himself "ai_art_is_art". It's a walking red flag
9
u/lord_of_the_keyboard 2d ago
It's a broken mess, it doesn't work with most of my simple documents
-7
0
u/Linuksoid 2d ago
I slop project to work stable
I mean you have claude writing its own code and you have MS writing windows code. So you tel lme
2
u/xxCorsicoxx 2d ago
No you don't. Why do you believe the snake oil salesman that their snake oil is tested personally by them?
And of it does fi the thing it's only if they their millions worth of tokens at it which you'll never have. And no agentic code ever had been quality maintainable code, it'll make so many bizarre decisions, lose context as it works, it cannot architect for shit. It's good as an assistant to remove some tedium but without heavy developer input and guardrails it'll be miserably bad
0
u/Linuksoid 1d ago
. Why do you believe the snake oil salesman that their snake oil is tested personally by them?
I mean its no different from what companies promise us. Also, there's like 91k github starts and plenty of contributors looking at the code. If there was something off it would have been found by now
been quality maintainable code, it'll make so many bizarre decisions, lose context as it works, it cannot architect for shit.
Sure. That's why you have it iterate and have many people helping it along
-9
u/Kingwolf4 2d ago
Well it is working . It is open source
You are free to critique it anyway you like, improve it, give suggestion
I think it can work. Obviously there needs to be actual humans reviewing some of the code and overall architecture and design etc. but other than that i think i works FOR NOW
9
3
u/xxCorsicoxx 2d ago
An agentic first or agentic only slop project is not something you'll be able to maintain. The code that shit produces is a jumbled mess
2
u/YankeeLimaVictor 2d ago
Wait, is there an art craft word, Excel and PowerPoint?? Thought it was adobe stuff
1
u/Kingwolf4 2d ago
Yup. They even got pdf craft. I tested with entire long books. Its working .
Although their organization shows less planning. Office apps should be seperate
Keep in mind the whole project is pre alpha right now. Features are not even complete yet.
But its amazing how fast it is, being built on modern tools compared to bloatships of adobe and Microsoft. If its already better in terms of core architecture, imagine after a few months of development

What's different from stock OnlyOffice?
