My Way to Welsh (Heini Gruffudd)

Hi All,

I'm an adult welsh learner, and really do find the Welsh is Fun and Welsh is Funtastic very very good. I’m looking for something a bit more concrete now and am thinking about Heini Gruffudd’s My Way to Welsh ? Has anyone got this book and do they recommend it ?

Diolch yn fawr

Gramadeg / Grammar Numerals

I have some questions about how numerals work.

I've started learning only 0-10 so far, and I've got really numerous questions. Also, I'm a little confused with the difference between the standard and the spoken languages

  1. Is "sero" used in Welsh and can it be pronounced with [z]?

  2. Does "un" cause limited soft mutation in sg. f. noun?

  3. Do "dau" and "dwy" cause soft mutation for all the nouns?

  4. What is the difference between "ail" and "eilfed" and do they both cause soft mutation?

  5. Is "cynta' " used in the spoken language

  6. What happens with "tri" and "chwe" in the spoken language (I mean do they cause aspirate mutation)?

  7. What the difference between "pum" and "pump"; "chwe" and "chwech"?

  8. Does "seithfed" cause any mutation?

  9. What is "deng"?

  10. Do any other numerals cause any mutation, and I've missed something?

  11. Does "cyntaf" follow a noun?

  12. Constructions with numerals are either numeral + singular noun or numeral + o + plural noun, right?

I'm extremely thankful to everyone who will respond to my questions

Ynganu / Pronunciation Is Rh being lost from the speech of some southern speakers?

I now listen carefully for this as it was suggested here that some southern speakers do not differentiate between R and Rh (replacing Rh with R - still rolled, though). I have heard this but I'm not convinced that all, say, Sir Gâr speakers have lost their Rh. For instance, I still hear Rh in the speech of Heledd Cynwal. (Raised in Bethlehem, Llandeilo). What do you hear?

Ynganu / Pronunciation Pronunciation of Prynhawn

Is it pronounced as (S) [prɪnˈhau̯n] or as [prənˈhau̯n], if the first one, then why? Is that because of some unknown rules of compounds (I assumed that the word is a compound, maybe I'm wrong)?

Edit: Also, how are the combinations, such as: eau, iau and some others with several vowel letters in a row(I'm guessing that first "i" usually represents [j], but what about "i"/"y" in the middle of a combination)

I apologise if it was hard to understand my English

Weekly Update on My Learning Progress

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I started learning Welsh on September 28, 2026, because I am interested in language learning. I'd like to post my weekly progress here. My goal is to achieve fluency in two years' time. My strategy is learning from real-life sentences, instead of a structured course, because I believe that's how we learn our native language. For my first week (Sept 28, 2026- Oct 2, 2026):

  1. I watched a documentary on the history of Wales. It's inspiring.

  2. I learned to speak the following two sentences. My recording is attached.

If anyone could offer corrections, I'd really appreciate it.

Words in Cymraeg

Hello! Is the Welsh word gelyn used exclusively to mean “enemy,” or can its meaning change when it appears alongside another word? For example, if it were incorporated into a character’s name, such as Evangelyn, what impression or associations would the name give in Welsh?

Cwestiwn / Question Pejorative terms that contain "gi"

I've noticed that there are many pejorative terms containing "gi" that are listed in various online dictionaries:

bolgi - glutton

brolgi - boaster

cachgi - coward

celwyddgi - liar

chwiwgi - rogue

clapgi / clepgi - gossiper / babbler

cilgi - coward

llechgi - sneak / skulker

llwfrgi / llyfrgi - coward

Are these terms used now? Or do they sound archaic?

Is this pattern productive? That is, if you were to make up a term using this structure (such as "twyllgi") would it be understood and could it plausibly "catch on"?

Cwestiwn / Question Welsh language help!

Hi! I'm looking to ask this guy to be my boyfriend next saturday, hes from south wales, and i'd love to ask him to be my boyfriend in welsh. (I am from lincolnshire so not a fluent speaker)

Welsh is his first language and since he has taught me some welsh, he told me google translate is not really accurate. So i was wondering if some native speakers on here could tell me the best way to ask him to be my boyfriend!

Thank you so much, i love your country and strongly believe welsh motorsport is the best in the world!

Thank you!

What are your top tips for learning Welsh quickly and effectively?

Bore da

I studied French up to GCSE level in school, and took several trips to France, but I can't do much more than order food and drink.

Similarly, I lived and worked for several years in an area with a significant minority Gujararti population, but never picked up more than the odd word.

In short, I don't believe that I have a great aptitude for languages, and don't want to spend years studying Welsh with nothing to show for it.

Any top tips and short cuts?

Diolch
