As announced a few weeks ago, with the coming municipal election we want to invite any declared and approved candidate to hold an AMA and connect with voters who are part of the /r/kelowna community.

We won't accept any AMAs before September 19 and we will be requiring some form of proof of identity.

To hold an AMA you will need a reddit account and use it to submit your own AMA post on the scheduled day. We will endeavour to moderate.

If you are a candidate who wishes to do an AMA please use modmail to reach out to us to schedule it. We will delete any AMA that was not pre-cleared by mods

AMA Rules for Questioners (stolen from /r/iama):

We will remove:

  • Answers to questions from anyone but the AMA participant.

  • Abusive or harassing comments

  • Requests for personal favours from the OP (For example, "OP, can you send me a signed autograph").

  • In AMA posts, top-level comments must ask a question. We will remove comments such as "OMG I love you..." and "No questions, just thanks!"

  • Comments where there would be no possibility of a real answer, especially where it is deliberately creepy or offensive.

  • "I bet OP won't answer this"-type responses, which usually come after the OP has finished responding to questions.

  • "Fluff," non-contributing responses from users, responding to all of the OP's comments for karma/attention.

  • Repeatedly asking the same question, which violates Reddit's site-wide rules.

  • Users attempting to bypass the rules by adding a ? to a nonquestion

  • Questions must be directed toward the individual(s) doing the IAMA.

  • A subreddit or other website organizing and voting for a group comment/question is considered to be vote cheating and is subject to removal. It is a violation of the rules of reddit and risks a sitewide ban.

  • Astroturfed questions. Astroturfing is the practice of an individual or group of individuals who plant questions in an IAmA post for a particular purpose.

List of candidates supporting Cannan?

I need to know who to avoid, aside from every current member of council. I don't like Dyas, but Cannan is an absolute mess of a human being.

10 questions we asked council candidates

We have had the pleasure of interviewing 9 candidates for the local election this year and wanted to share their responses in here to hopefully give people a better idea of where these candidates stand on housing, transportation and the economy:

To be clear none of these are endorsements, simply just the people who responded to our interview requests haha.

Where would be the biggest party in Kelowna this Halloween? I only seen Halloween Crawl but that seems to be focused on Craft and other bars.

Visitor Question Rollerskating in Kelowna

Hey all, I’ll be heading over to Kelowna near the end of this year and I was thinking of bringing my rollerskates over. I simply love rollerskating and wanted to know if there are any indoor spaces where I can practice rollerskating.

And if there are any fellow rollerskaters in Kelowna, how do you do it? I’m sure there must be something as there is an inline and rollerskate community in the city.

With menu prices this high, I think it would be worth putting money toward a photographer to take pictures of the ACTUAL food at your restaurant. This cursed beef Wellington image is haunting. Not to mention objectively unappetizing in every way.

Gord Lovegrove AMA - Council (re-election) candidate - 4 pm today

Hey Kelowna Reddit!

I’m Gord Lovegrove and as many of you may know, I'm running for re-election to city council. And as announced on the pinned thread here: (https://www.reddit.com/r/kelowna/comments/1wjh2hx/the_upcoming_civic_election_and_amas_are_you_a/) , I’ll be doing an AMA today!

We are just a few days away from general voting day! (Oct 17) with early voting well underway. It looks like turnout has been really good for advance voting so far (castanet), with several locations open this Wednesday (Oct 14) at the Parkinson Rec Centre, Black Box theatre on Water Street, and both Okanagan College and UBCO campuses. I hope you make time to go out and vote, make a difference, and if you can bring a friend or two.

You can find lots of info about my campaign on my website here: https://lovegrovekelowna.ca.

Or if you want to go straight to my platform document you can find it here.

I’ve really enjoyed speaking with so many people and hearing their perspectives and concerns while knocking on doors and at events. I’m looking forward to hearing from all of you virtually too!

I’ll be answering questions from at least 4pm-8pm and I’ll do my best to give you a good answer. Ask Me Anything!

Bath robe shopping

I know nothing about shipping for clothing but I'll be visiting Kelowna with my wife soon and she's been wanting a nice bath robe. Rather than just ordering one online and hoping for the best I wanted to give her a chance to try some on and find the best fit. If anyone has suggestions on stores they know carry robes that would be super helpful.

SLA Printing?

I’m tryna print a mouse on my A1 out of PLA but it’s not very strong and the supports keep breaking the print when coming off.

Does anyone know of anyone that can do SLA printing and would be willing to print a few small parts for some money? I’d rather support an independent maker than a big company like PCB way but if you have a recommendation for a company let me know too.

Any leads would be much appreciated!

Fort Knox???

Anybody know the story behind what the city has been building in the center median on Highway 97 near Cooper. The infrastructure looks like overkill for the 3 trees they have planted in it. I'm assuming it must have another purpose.

Any cosplayers that wanna work with a learning photographer for free?

Hi I'm an 18yr old photographer that has a couple of years of practice and learning. I love doing portraits and I had gone to the kelowna comicon this year with my camera and I absolutely loved it, I just wish I had more courage to ask more people. If you're a cosplayer and you're interested in meeting up sometime for a free photoshoot please lmk!! I don't go on reddit that much but I'll be trying to check back often. Maybe if your around my age I'll make some new friends as well :)

Casual D&D

Is there a public game that doesn't care about use of pronouns or get heavily involved with politics involving personal choice? Just looking for some drop in games where conversation topics don't revolve around personal identification.

Hope your all having a good day.

Bonfire locations?

I’m looking to host a marshmallow roast around a fire pit. Are there any local areas where I could do this? There would be 50-70 people, most likely and I’m struggling to think of an appropriate spot! Does bear creek still have a fire pit? I checked the park map but didn’t see anything other than a “picnic area”.

Ceramic coating recommendations

Hey all,

Looking for a recommendation for a local business that can do an excellent job on a new car fixing any paint issues and applying something that will keep the paint looking great for a while. Specifically the car is parked near a pine tree I'm hoping for something that can make it easier to clean more often without beating up the clearcoat.

Thanks!

Christian Vote?

Have you seen orange signs popping up around Kelowna urging Christians to vote for Christian candidates? The signs have a QR code that takes you to a website that provides an inaccurate list of the Kelowna municipal election candidates identified by their religion. The website features an introduction by former federal politician Stockwell Day (a West Kelowna resident) and literally says Christians should "choose from among yourselves".

Some will defend this. Imagine the outrage if the religion was not Christian?

Come on Kelowna - get out and vote!! Early on October 10, 14, 15. 16 and official voting day October 17. Check Kelowna City Website for locations.

For those with parents in private seniors’ care homes, what level of service and communication should families expect?

My parents have been living in a private seniors’ care residence in Kelowna for about eight months. This is my first experience navigating seniors’ care, so I honestly have nothing to compare it with, and I’d appreciate hearing about other people’s experiences.

I visit my parents almost daily, but I’ve been disappointed by some aspects of the experience, particularly when it comes to management and communication. At times, I feel as though management barely knows who I am, despite having two parents living in the facility and being there so frequently.

One particularly frustrating example is that it took five months to get my email address corrected in their records.

I understand that these facilities are busy, that staff have a lot on their plates, and that no residence is going to be perfect. I’m not expecting VIP treatment or perfection. However, I would have thought that management would know the family members of residents who visit regularly and that relatively simple administrative issues could be resolved in a reasonable timeframe.

I’m trying to figure out whether my expectations are unrealistic or whether this is a sign of a management culture that other families would also find concerning.

For those of you with parents in private retirement residences or care homes:
Does management know you and communicate with you proactively?
How responsive are they when you raise a concern or ask for something to be corrected?
Is it normal to feel that you have to chase management repeatedly to get things addressed?
Have you found significant differences between residences in the quality of management and family communication?
I’d especially appreciate hearing from people in Kelowna or elsewhere in the Okanagan, although experiences from anywhere in BC would be helpful.

I’m not looking to name and shame a particular facility. I genuinely want to understand what’s reasonable to expect, learn from other families’ experiences, and determine whether my experience is typical or whether I should be considering other options for my parents.

Thank you for sharing your experiences.
