Discussion Train Low Kick (gedan mawashi geri)

Hey Guys,

Kyokushin Karate white belt here.

How would you guys train the low kick if you don't have a bag or pads to hit at home?

Is going through motions in air enough and then apply them in sparring at training?

Also, I can do it pretty well-ish on my right leg, but I need some work with my left, how would you approach this?

Thanks so much, would love to hear what you guys do/have done :)

Thanks!

If you have a sofa, that can usually do? Or a bed side? Pad with pillows and off you go.

Kicking the air is very important to get the muscle memory. Kicking real stuff is very important to get a feeling for the recoil and impact. You need both.

For the left leg - it's just practice. Slow makes fast.

Find a friend who will let you kick them.

For every kick in the air, control is key. Because you have no area of impact you cannot really train hard kicks like you can with bags etc. But technique and good control, especially stopping and holding your leg in the right place is a nice way to get better kicks.
