Hi everyone! 💚🦜

Greetings from Japan!

I'm Tsuki Asano, an independent picture book creator from Japan.

I recently published a children's picture book called "I'm Kakapo", inspired by the amazing kākāpō of New Zealand!

These adorable, flightless parrots have such unique personalities, and I wanted to capture their charm in a warm, playful story for young children and animal lovers.

I created both the story and illustrations myself, and I'm really excited to share my little kākāpō with people who love these wonderful birds!

If you're curious, you can check out my book on Amazon:

I'd love to hear what fellow kākāpō enthusiasts think of the artwork and the idea behind the book!

Thank you for reading, and sending lots of love to all kākāpō fans from Japan! 💚

Stephen has been championing kākāpō for years, so having him take the time to record this message for our Bird of the Year campaign is honestly rather extraordinary.

And, of course, this is a considerably longer-lasting relationship than Sirocco's famously enthusiastic encounter with Stephen's friend and fellow kākāpō champion, conservationist Mark Carwardine. 😂

Thank you, Sir Stephen. It means the world to Campaign Kākāpō, and to everyone who cares about these extraordinary birds.

There are only 325 kākāpō left, and Bird of the Year is a wonderfully silly but genuinely useful way of getting more people talking about them and the conservation work keeping them alive.

If you'd like to help the kākāpō campaign, you can vote here:

Just remember to validate your vote afterwards!

And if you're able to, consider supporting Forest & Bird with a donation too. Every bit helps support the wider conservation mahi protecting Aotearoa's threatened species.

Also: just goes to show you should send that audacious email. 🦜💚

Kākāpō questions, BOTY chat, conservation nerdiness and Sirocco stories all welcome in the comments!

Hello there! I'm a fellow kakapo lover and animal lover in general. I was wondering if anyone on this subreddit would like to see a drawing of a kakapo (that I made recently) on here? Also, does anyone remember Sirocco the kakapo? (Look he is so happy!)

This years young are now old enough to be officially added to the Kakapo population. There are now 325 Kakapo in existence. I remember being happy when the numbers reached 125 so this is real hope for their future.

Hey everyone! I wanted to share Parrot Tarot, which took me 7 years to hand-paint each of the 78 cards by hand.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/parrottarot/parrot-tarot-by-krisztina-lazar

Each card has a unique parrot on it and that parrot tells the story and is the meaning of that card. The Hierophant card is our beloved Kakapo. He is shown performing in his lek, calling out into the darkness, hoping that a mate responds.
Please check out my campaign and if it resonates, please support and help share with others you think would love it. 💚🦜💚

91 for this breeding season - good luck little guys.

First streamed 27 Jul 2018 with 58,910 views. Republished on DOC's YouTube channel May 2026 in honour of Sir David Attenborough's 100th birthday.

I was going to share it once they left the nest so we could watch them grow older one poop at a time. But i feel like we all miss them so much with the Livestream being down. So I'm sharing it now.

Enjoy🖤

The kākāpō is a flightless nocturnal parrot from New Zealand. Only 235 adults exist. This year a bumper rimu berry crop triggered their first breeding season in 4 years and over 100 chicks hatched smashing the previous record of 85.

All chicks now hatched so the only changes now will be chick deaths. Good luck little ones.

Before this breeding season, I know they were already stretching the capacity of the pest-free islands and had a few at Maungatautari but what's the plan for this year's little ones? I haven't been able to find much information in the news reports, etc. Are there going to be more being moved to the mainland? Are there other islands in contention?

There are 98 known surviving chicks from the current season ranging from 3 days to 49 days old.

Sadly, we've also lost an adult bird. Matamua who was four years old has died of an infection, bringing the adult population down to 235.

They won't all survive to adulthood but this is still an outstanding season. Good luck to all those little guys.

Please, for the love of kākāpō, watch it with the sound on hahahahaha.
