POV triggerfish

•

u/PGP- 11h ago

The octopus swam under the rock forcing that stonefish out. Looks like it's the octopus camouflage, but it's not. Still very cool video though.

•

u/krt941 9h ago

Huh, that fooled me. Thanks for pointing it out.

•

u/Snailhouse01 8h ago

Oh, same. I thought 'wow, that was some amazing mimicry'!

•

u/AfterMykonos 8h ago

No that’s definitely the Octopus’s camouflage at the end there

•

u/RiotDesign 5h ago

No, they're correct. The octopus flushed out a stonefish at the end when it went under the rock.

I assume it’s this sort of relationship between the octopus and the stonefish…

•

u/JonFrost 4h ago

Look again, I thought it was the octopus being cool too 😭

•

u/Grim_Prophecy 11h ago

If it weren't for the short lifespan of the octopus as a species, I'd argue that they would surpass cetaceans in intelligence based off the fact that they are solitary animals. Cetaceans prefer groups to thrive and octopuses seem to learn exclusively on their own and very quickly. Imagine the hunting/camouflage prowess of a 50 year old octopus.

•

u/Calm-Supermarket1864 11h ago

Another aspect is that when the young are released, they float throughout the ocean aimlessly without a society or culture. Each one, basically, has to learn existence from scratch. So lifespan length, yes, but also the practical issue of the dispersion.

Listen to the audiobook “Mountain in the Sea” by Ray Nayler for a mind-blowing near-future exploration of an octopus “culture”, and the meaning of sentience, primarily in an octopus, but also in many other settings. (For instance, the smartest android ever is part of the story. Is it sentient? “I always thought I was” is its answer…)

Plus, think about it. They can never learn fire.

•

u/HooGoesThere 8h ago

No fire (no cooking or metallurgy) and it’s tough to write underwater. Of course engraving is possible and a lot of early human writing was engraving.

As a thought experiment, there are ways around fire and metal. They could use geothermal vents to get around lack of fire but that’s much much tougher. They could develop biological science over chemical and physical science and figure shit out from there. They could use bone and coral instead of metal. Agriculture is possible.

But then, the life span and lack of social elements make it even harder for the octopus.

•

u/Ducallan 5h ago

It’s too bad they can’t learn to write, because they’d have plenty of access to ink…

Chromatophores

They are easily one of the most fascinating creatures alive. I always thought it would be cool to have one as a pet, but the short lifespans would make that rough and they almost seem too intelligent to be kept as pets.

Stonefish alpha aura

•

u/Loko8765 11h ago

The face on that fish when the octopus transformed into a stonefish… probably what the Disney artists had in mind when drawing Finding Nemo.

•

u/ReadditMan 11h ago

It didn't transform, the octopus just went into a crevice and the stonefish swam out

•

u/Educational_Log_4006 10h ago

Yup! Although it's true that some octopus can mimick stone fish!

But here it's a real one . I've stepped on sea urchins before and I'm so glad I've never stepped on one of these.

•

u/Loko8765 10h ago

I was surprised at how good it was, color me fooled.

As the fish continues to bite, the octopus retreats, making a dash for a small rock, tucking its tentacles underneath it to prevent them being bitten off. As it takes shelter, it disturbs a scorpion fish - an extremely venomous fish. The scorpion fish jumps into view and startles the titan triggerfish

•

u/ImNoNelly 11h ago

Half expected the stonefish to just be the octopus in disguise!

•

u/Straight-Treacle-630 10h ago

I thought it was 😳

•

u/tapeforpacking 11h ago

Octopus are just so awesome

•

u/Trips-Over-Tail 11h ago

Titan trigger fish. The big aggressive one. My heart rate increases ever time I see one.

•

u/zzkj 11h ago

They're only aggressive if you stray near their nest. Problem is, you'll see the pissed off Titan before you see the nest!

•

u/Trips-Over-Tail 11h ago

And they chase you all the way to the surface.

My aunt has fins with chunks taken out of them, and by dad has a video (set to music in the minor key) he took of one circling him rapidly and aggressively under the boat.

•

u/suspiciousdolphin 11h ago

Had one nipping at my flippers a few years ago as I accidentally went near the nest apparently - scared the shit out of me that a fish the size of a small travel bag was so quick and so aggressive. I keep an eye out for them these days and steer well clear!

•

u/MsStormyTrump 11h ago

You keep on doing that, I keep on farting in your face, Nemo.

•

u/DyingSunSeverian 11h ago

Utterly bamboozled, love how the octopus uses everything at his disposal.

•

u/Acceptable-Ad1203 11h ago

should have started with stonefish - game over, unless he was just playing

Metal Gear, here's Decoy Octopus

Here is a higher-quality, less-cropped, and non-horizontally-flipped version of this video.

Occurred on April 1, 2024 / Fulidhoo Island, Vaavu Atoll, Maldives

"PADI Course Director and owner of 5-star dive centre Fulidhoo Dive Maldives, was guiding a morning dive in Vaavu Atoll with experienced divers, when suddenly in this distance he saw what he thought was a black shadow on the reef. Looking up and seeing nothing that could cast a shadow, he suddenly realized that the black cloud could only be one thing - octopus ink. He swam closer, leading his guests towards the black cloud and they came across a very unusual sight. A titan triggerfish. Now, all scuba divers know that titan triggerfish are the scariest fish in the ocean- sharks are nothing compared to them! Titan triggerfish have huge human-like teeth that can crunch through coral and if they are nesting they defend their territory aggressively - often charging other fish and divers. They are known as extremely bad-tempered and territorial fish. And now a poor octopus had got in its path and was paying the price!

He starts to film as the fish continues to attack the octopus as the octopus inks it and lands a square punch on the fish. As the fish continues to bite, the octopus retreats, making a dash for a small rock, tucking its tentacles underneath it to prevent them being bitten off. As it takes shelter, it disturbs a scorpion fish - an extremely venemous fish. The scorpion fish jumps into view and startles the titan triggerfish… and it quickly backs away from the scorpionfish and the fight! Lucky octopus!"

u/DragonHeart2038 11h ago

Their defense and camo mechanisms are so interesting to me. Awesome creatures

•

u/RedaNassef 11h ago

The sheer level of tactical intelligence and raw adaptability displayed here is honestly mind-blowing. It goes to show how these creatures don't just react on mere survival instinct, but rather master their environment with complete dominance, utilizing camouflage and calculated moves in a way that feels almost otherworldly

•

u/CunderThunt42069 11h ago

Beep boop

•

u/TheGeneral_Specific 11h ago

Which model did you use to write this

•

u/SubmersibleKormarant 9h ago

Octobot 3.5

•

u/It_Happens_Today 9h ago

They even failed to copy the closing period in their haste to have the machine talk for them.

•

u/Pr0d1gyyy 11h ago

I knew it could camouflage by using environment colors but didn't know it can transform shape into a fish like

•

u/cans-of-swine 11h ago

It didn't, that was a fish.

•

u/One-Positive309 10h ago

A highly venomous Stone Fish, the Titan Triggerfish is not prepared to mess with that and the Octopus knew it !

•

u/AAPL_ 11h ago

Lick my ass

•

u/ClyanStar 7h ago

AI garbage talk. Lots of words, very little meaning.

•

u/DragonHeart2038 6h ago

The camo blending in to the environment and the ink splashes while trying to move and then eventually just blending in to a rock camo. Such intelligence. Fish was flabbergasted haha

•

u/DragonHeart2038 6h ago

I feel like it was the strategic ink splashes that saved himself more then the camo now that i think about it.. but that end where he just formed with a rock camo was sick tho haha. Amazing creatures fr

•

u/koosekoose 3h ago

This is an AI bot by the way.

•

u/Valuable_Nose_4693 11h ago

It’s awesome how quick it can change to blend into its surroundings

•

u/fike88 11h ago

Turning into a stonefish almost immediately was nuts

•

u/WrongWangSorry 11h ago

Solid play. Casting Darkness gives attackers a disadvantage on dice rolls and often messes up the game's enemy AI

•

u/Tudar87 11h ago

Ink didn't work well but Stone Fish aren't to be fucked with lol

•

u/sLeeeeTo 11h ago

god i love cephalopods. we cannot yet fully comprehend their intelligence. their innate abilities feel like they’re straight out of sci-fi.

•

u/fuzzytradr 10h ago

He's Triggered!

•

u/SubmersibleKormarant 9h ago

Do triggerfish change their color too? Or am I just seeing the ink?

Regardless, consider the following:

HAHAHA GET DUNKED ON YOU TOOTH FILLED BASTARD

•

u/English_Joe 9h ago

Don’t. Eat. Octopus.

•

u/icollectcatwhiskers 7h ago

'I fart in your general direction'

•

u/guitartoad 2h ago

I wonder if other sea creatures watch trigger fish humiliation videos for sexual purposes.

•

u/Mooniekate 2h ago

You can tell the triggerfish is the bad guy by his handlebar mustache

•

u/th3_pund1t 41m ago

It’s called coal rolling

•

u/SweetieLoveBug 11h ago

Ack! Lenny! What the hell is wrong with you!

Gimme that 5 dollars you owe me! Get back here with my 5 dollars! 🤣

•

u/OldAssistant4220 11h ago

they're incredibly smart relative to lifespan.

•

u/Patient_Hold_4190 11h ago

the way he LOCKED IN for that camo. stiff as a board, doesn’t even look real. wow

•

u/Maleficent_Bar920 11h ago

Bro got stonefish mogged by an octopus, that’s crazy

•

u/SnooPeppers259 11h ago

Damn!
If I could have a superpower, that would be it.
I am Octopus Man, here and gone in a second.
Better than Chameleon Chad, any day.

•

u/Wiffystardawg 11h ago

That triggerfish just got tattooed.

•

u/kram78 11h ago

Parrot fish isn’t it

•

u/MushroomPatriot 11h ago

Lost in the sauce

•

u/YumYumYellowish 11h ago

Trigger fish are MEAN and deserve to be humiliated to be honest

•

u/RandomGuy_IQ530K 11h ago

how much ink does an octopus have on their body?

•

u/[deleted] 11h ago

•

u/Calm-Supermarket1864 11h ago

Start with “My Octopus Friend” and then “Mountain in the Sea” by Nayler. An octopus is far too smart, much more than we’d expect. I can’t eat them any more. Their brainS are in their tentacles.
