Our school district here in WA has amazing, well-paid teachers. The surrounding houses are affordable at their income level. I feel pretty grateful for it because our kids have had nothing but great school experiences. I know it’s not like that everywhere.

They mean there will be a sudden but fleeting monetary boom that will eventually die out. In a month's time her subscribers will tank and she will make so little money from this, while then making it harder for her to get any public facing job going forward. Where I live, the district pays $140 / day.
And you have to pay $45 for a substitute teacher license, along with $80 for a background check. So on day one, you pretty much wind up in the red, after taxes. Then you get that sweet, sweet $17.50 / hour.

There are fast food places around my city that have starting pay around that much. I guess substitute teaching is easier in that you can just sit on your phone, complete online work or training between looking up to check on the kids (depending on The class).

Yeah, I've been a hiring manager in tech for years. I've heard a lot of "I could make that at McDonald's / Target / wherever" from people who never set foot in a college classroom, when the entry-level positions legitimately do pay the same. And my response has always been "Those places don't have a hundred people applying. And, this job is a stepping stone to something else. If you do it right, you should be in a different role in less than a year's time."
I don't know how the schools sell it, honestly. I kicked around seeing what it was like to be a sub, when I wanted to burn off a bunch of accrued time off. But giving my first day for free was a non-starter. I'm kind of surprised that people will clock the 60 college credits (my state's minimum requirement) and be like "All set. Gonna be a sub now, and never, ever get the benefits that teachers get, or compensation for experience."

They are bought out by high property taxed areas or private/Montessori schools.
In those areas they don’t even need “good” teachers since the parents are already so involved and usually well off. Local high school recently had a back to school night and they had to close off some roads bc so many parents were there and they needed extra street parking.

In the US, wrongful dismissal is a very hard case to win. Only a few specific reasons for firing someone are illegal and then you have to prove that you were fired for that illegal reason. Firing someone because you don’t approve of their extracurricular activities is not illegal. I think it’s dumb, but it isn’t at all illegal.

Usually there's some kind of fine print in their employment contract that would allow them to dismiss her for something like this
In the past when this has happened at Private schools they've mostly had "decency" clauses and stuff that boil down too "if your behavior is too far out of the bounds of what we consider acceptable we can fire you"
No clue how it works for public school teachers usually though
Edit: looks like she was a substitute teacher not a full time teacher so she's basically a gig worker for a school. Substitutes are sometimes closer to contractors or temps than true employees so I won't be shocked they can dismiss her for this

But inherently I think the issue with your comparison is that it's two areas where there's a very clear conflict of interest versus two things that happen outside of work. I'm not arguing whether it's right or not for a teacher to have an OF account but it sure ain't anywhere near as morally incorrect as political insider trading.

- Sports betting has existed since the first Olympic games in 776 BCE. it's not surprising at all that athletes would be in on it.
- Banning workers from consuming weed off-hours is stupid to begin with
- the fact that a teacher would need to start an OnlyFans account to make ends meet is a systemic issue. Teenagers should be able to understand that a woman engaging in these practices does not give them the right to show her disrespect at school, and any kid that actually finds her account was already snooping around on websites where they shouldn't be.

Being a role model doesn't require active involvement in their lives. Merely learning what the teacher does, which is certainly bound to happen, is sufficient to influence them.
