As a lover of a well-made spreadsheet, replete with auto calculations and every statistic you could possibly want, I understand that the group of people who truly appreciate them is a rarefied group. “Look, it retrieves data and updates automatically! Tab 2 has all the charts you need dating back several years!” … “K thanks.”

That "K thanks" is too real

Not quite the same, but a colleague once asked me to put together a spreadsheet. She needed it quickly, so I made sure it was ready within the agreed timeframe. I was actually quite proud of the result. I even showed it to another colleague who might benefit from it.

But because I don’t trust her (she’s always making a fuss and exaggerating the importance of the things she does), I password-protected the spreadsheet.

I kept asking her how she liked it, and she kept telling me how handy it was. Then, three effing weeks later, she had a teamsmeeting across from my desk, where she needed the spreadsheet.

The look of horror on her face when she realised she couldn’t open it.

I don’t work in an office, so I have no frame of reference for what this means. Was she trying to steal your work and pass it off has her own?

Likely she never bothered to actually look at it until the day of

She said she needed it done quickly but didn’t use it for weeks.

And then someone makes a copy and starts adding data to that instead...

Of all places in the world, I went to a tractor pull competition that was live updating the score sheet on Google Sheets including current standing and all the pertinent statistics and information surrounding such an event. shared by a nice QR code on the program. I know no other person there that day appreciated as much as I did. I wish I could have shook that persons hand who took the time to make that spreadsheet and looked them in the eye and let them know what a gem they are, because I guarantee nobody else did. We spreadsheet lovers are indeed a rare breed with a deep passion.

I've made one we still use to this day. So in Warren Robinett fashion, I hid my name in white text on an empty cell saying who created it.
