Monthly Megathread Were they on a break?!!

It has been a question that has been asked so many times before. Because of the high demand - but similar posts that has been generated. We're opening the floor (this mega thread) for the debate!

The case for Ross: Rachel said, "Maybe we should just take a break," and then told Monica the next morning that they "broke up."

The case for Rachel: A "break" isn't a "breakup," and Mark showing up at the apartment didn't give Ross a "get out of jail free" card two hours later.

What are your thoughts on these cases?

---
All funsies aside, We do ask everyone to stay civil and kind to one another, everyone is allowed to have opinions and express those, but treat others like how you want to be treated as well. This thread will re-occur ever 14 days to keep the time line clean from any 'On a Break, break-up?' posts! (if you spot any feel free to report it to us by pressing the report button!)

Discussion Hot Take: Despite Ross's problematic characterization and how he handled his relationship with Rachel, Susan's treatment of him was really disrespectful when it came to Carol's pregnancy, in my opinion.

Post image

Let me be clear that I'm not against Susan as a character, nor do I condone Ross's jealous and insecure behaviour in the show. However, I feel that Carol was unnecessarily harsh and a bit demeaning when it came to Carol being pregnant with Ben and how Ross was doing his best to feel included in that whole process of being a single father. He was genuinely trying his hardest to find a way to make sure that he does his part as a first-time father while Susan was constantly going out of her way to throw shade at him for no reason and trying to reduce his contributions to this pregnancy situation.

Given the tension between both of them, it felt all the more impactful and emotional when it was Ross of all people who convinced Carol to go through with her wedding to Susan and also had his moment when he danced with Susan after they got married. That being said, I do feel Susan was quite harsh and critical towards Ross in the first season.

Let me know your thoughts and views on this and whether you think this is a fair observation.

"The Last One" when Ross and Phoebe are headed to the airport chasing Rachel and a guy gets in the cab. I 100% would have had Ross yell, "Get out of the Fucking cab!"

I noticed they say this a lot, and I know they all have their own signature lines, but I thought this one was kind of cute since it’s like a couple of lines that they do as well. They also hi Five a lot

Discussion What's the best physical comedy moment?

I just watched several episodes from s5-6, and the physical comedy is just pure gold. Ross' leather pants, pivot, Ross' teeth, Monica's turkey dance. And some underrated ones, I laughed so hard at Chandler's reaction when Monica said girls don't have pillow fights. And the marry "signs". It's just so funny as hell.

What do you think is the best physical comedy moment?

Question What is your favorite Chandler joke?

• Upvotes

I’ve been rewatching Friends for the past 3 weeks, and I’m up to S6 E23. Chandler said something in response to Monica that really made me laugh. Monica said, “Ross, let me ask you a question. All jokes aside, where is this relationship going?” Chandler said, “Wait a minute. All jokes aside? I didn’t agree to that.” That had me giggling for like 2 minutes straight. 😂
But that’s not even my favorite one. My favorite would have to be S6 E1. For context, Rachel and Ross meet up with Joey, Chandler, Monica, and Phoebe and find out that they got drunk last night and got married.

Rachel: Well, I guess we just find a divorce lawyer? (Looks at Ross.)

Chandler: Well, I think, I think, Ross already has one.

Monica: Yeah-yeah. That guy's finally gonna be able to put in that pool. (Both Chandler and her laugh.)

Ross: Okay.

Chandler: Now, this one's free, right? Because you paid for the first two, so the third one's free.

I laughed for like 10 minutes straight and had to pause the show.

Like Monica and chocolate chip still understandable.

Joey should be something with jam

Phoebe makes the best oatmeal and raisin cookies

Ross could be like a sandwich cookie

Rachel and Chandler no ideas for them, but these flavours don't seem fitting.

Question How similar were Chandler and Monica’s childhoods?

Post image
167 Upvotes

they both had dealt with like coping mechanisms for negligent, parents, and sort of their need for attention, which is something I’ve noticed that they bounce off of and I think they reference it once. So I think it’s like an underrated part of how they were kind of similar in way.

Discussion I find it really funny that since Ursula Buffay canonically becomes Governor of New York around or before 2021, there’s a decent chance she could’ve defeated Andrew Cuomo

It’s also possible that she took Kathy Hochul’s place in the timeline, but it’s implied that she was already Governor by 2021, meaning she was in office when Cuomo was in our timeline.

Discussion Do you think any of the other five Friends will eventually write a memoir?

Matthew Perry published "Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing" in November 2022, less than a year before he died. Lisa Kudrow wrote the foreword, it went to #1 on the NYT list, and apparently Perry actually wrote it himself.

Which got me wondering: are we eventually going to get the other five versions of "Friends"?

I looked around, and in 2021 Jennifer Aniston was asked about writing a memoir and basically said no, she was still living her life. Then in 2022 she had moved pretty substantially: “I’m going to do that one day.” There were later reports that she was actually working on one, but as far as I can tell there still isn't an announced publisher, title or release date. So I wouldn't count that as a real book yet.

And I can't find anything comparable from Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc or David Schwimmer.

Ideally, I would want five different memories of the same ten years. Perry's book is overwhelmingly the story of Perry's addiction, because of course it is! That WAS the central fact of his Friends years. But what would Lisa Kudrow remember about 1994 that David Schwimmer doesn't? What did Courteney Cox think was actually happening when the show went from successful sitcom to this gigantic cultural thing? What did Matt LeBlanc think when *Friends* ended and he was the one who immediately had to go make "Joey"?

And presumably each of them remembers Perry differently now too.

My guess is Aniston is the most likely to eventually do it, although ironically hers might be the least "Friends"-centered because Brad Pitt, the tabloids, infertility, etc etc etc. would take up enormous chunks of the book. Lisa Kudrow might actually be the one I'd most want to read because she seems unusually analytical about comedy and has now started going back and watching the show herself.

So which of the five do you think actually writes one? And more importantly, whose would you most want to read?

Discussion Rachel-Chandler vs Rachel-Joey: which duo do you like more?

Post image
36 Upvotes

I love all of them, but I like the Rachel-Chandler duo more.

Their relationship has a clear boundary, and their duo feels more warm to watch.

With Rachel and Joey, there is a tension in their dynamics.

Joey's out of line flirting, and even worse their arc ending up in a weird romance in the later seasons. If you are not a fan of their romance like me, it is disturbing to even watch some of their earlier moments during a rewatch.

Which duo do you like more and why?

Discussion The apartment switch?

Did you think the apartment switch was funny? I think it is especially funny when a running joke carries over multiple episodes. Could they have done it longer or did you agree with keeping it to just a few episodes?

"How come you never mentioned Ben before?" Carol asked.
"We just cooked it up," said Ross.
"That's what we were off doing," said Susan.

Question What plot twist from later seasons had you like this?

Post image

For me, I would have to say the exact moment of this scene right here

The moment when the gang had all discovered Rachel herself went backpacking across Western Europe was such a surprise for me, everyone's individual follow-up line was very funny, especially Joey revealing he's Ken Adams to her

I'm keen to see what are all of your shocking moments!

I know both of them eventually separately become their own couples, which makes them like romantically involved, but just as friends, which pairing of these two were closer as friends do you think?

He is so smooth with how he tells Monica to calm down and very thoughtfully distracts her from her problems by asking her to get him a beer! We should all have friends like Joey, in my opinion. 🥹

Question I didn't understand this joke

In the episode where Joey's working at Chandler company, before he gets hired he meets a coworker of Chandler's.

"-I just was telling Joey about the opening in Fleshman's group.
-Fleshman's group huh? Whatever you do, don't eat his sandwiches"

Can anyone explain that joke please 😭

I never followed any kind of pop culture or celebrity culture in the 90s until now, where I’m seeing all these old award show clips of the cast that were apparently super popular. What was their star power like back in the 90s?
