What /r/hamstercare is about

This group has been created for the sole purpose of talking about the positives along with the negatives of keeping hamsters as pets (and for keeping those hamster-but-is-actually-a-guinea-pig-tshirt advertisements at bay).

Most important thing to remember here is: If you can have compassion for animals, you can have compassion for people too.

I did think about writing up a care guide to pin, but ultimately decided against it when there's plenty of good ones already out there that do it better than I could. If you have a good reccomendation for one that helped you, please share it below.

We wouldn't have places like these if people understood everything. We were all new once. This subreddit might very well be someone's first contact to better animal care. While we expect posting is opening up to criticism, it should always be constructive and kind.

We're a subreddit designed to be asked questions about the care of hamsters. Any posts containing images with health concerns should be marked as NSFW to blur them. Some of those questions or responses do get repetitive. Use the flairs or suggest how we can change them.

In an ideal world; everyone would research before getting a pet, people wouldn't get surprised with the responsibility of a pet, everyone would be in a financially stable situation at all times, every country would follow scientific evidence for its animal regulations, people wouldn't be abusing their animals to the point where some need rehoming, and I wouldn't be getting death threats among other semi-regular verbal abuse from banned people that claim are 'just being brutally honest because others need to hear it'. My point is, we don't live in an ideal world. Sometimes that 'dumb question' might need a little more compassion or a kind voice for them to find a solution, get reassurance, or generally just do better.

Hamster care in general has a steep learning curve because they're sold to the general public as cheap child-friendly pocket pets and generally they aren't.  Startup costs alone can be around $400-$500 and vet visits going anywhere between $50-$100+ with many vets not even accepting hamsters. It's best to call around in advance to find your closest one.

Be kind in your posts, report when you see those that are unable to have a civil discussion (and I'm begging you, please, stop reporting when you disagree with an opinion). Use the upvote system to support opinions you agree with or don't - as long as it's civil and doesn't go against group rules you can discuss anything. Start a topic if you want to get more insight on something hamster related. We're here to share and learn.

We support going to a vet first. Report if you see anything that discourages vet visits. On the flip side, the amount of times this group has saved a vet visit over the discovery of scent glands being on the hips is higher than I'd like to admit.

The cage minimum here is 450sqin. We know it sucks. It sucks for a reason. It's scientifically proven hamsters thrive best in over 1500sqin of space with as much depth to the bedding as you can possibly fit. Anything less than that size will always suck. Hamsters have massive territories in the wild. We will always promote bigger is better in cage size. (For reference: largest Ikea samla comes to around 600sqin, so does the prevue cage, 50gal/189L sterilite is 800sqin, a 75gal aquarium comes to about 900sqin and the Ikea detolf is at around 1000sqin).

The reason we keep to North American standards as a minimum is for accessibility reasons, this also includes minimums for rescues and breeders. If you want change: Go to your animal welfare for better regulations. Contact companies that make the cages and ask for bigger sizes or for smaller bar spacing in rabbit/guinea-pig cages. Support rescues, or ethical breeders and small chain pet stores that show better animal care. This subreddit will change when they change. You can be that change.

If that lights a fire up your ass, then good. That's the intention. Please go do something about it that could make a difference. There's subreddits out there dedicated to animal activism. Suggest any below you've found that could help.

We're a space for new and experienced owners alike. We're here to learn and support each other in growing and improving our husbandry. Hamster care as a whole has come a long way, and still has a long way to go.

TL;DR we're the same as any other subreddit. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it sucks. Be kind and go pet a hamster.

hey again yall! this is luna, my female syrian. again i come to reddit to ask for advice…

she looks really chunky to me. i try to limit her food to two tbsp every other day, with some treats a few times now and then (she loves yogurt drops, corn kernals and peas). she weighs about 200 grams and is estimated to be 9 months old. should i cut down? i mean google says that she is a healthy weight but she looks… robust. additionally, i’m worried she’s not using her wheel. i used to hear her running for hours at night but now she seems like she doesn’t do it at all 🥲🥲

p.s. - her food mix is the mazuri rat and mouse + the gourmet higgins sunburst

Hi! So recently about one week and half ago I've got an Angora Syrian Hamster (Male, aproximately 4-5 months), and the enclosure in where he is now is not the best for hamsters (Is a tanks but not the biggest for him and the second Floor is half grid) so I'm looking to buy a propper enclosure for him, and where I live I am having trouble to find a large tank (I've found one but it was broken...) so I was thinking of buying one of this Big boxes to make his enclosure (If itsafe for gim it could be permanent but I rather that it be a temporary enclosure) but idk if it's safe for hamsters so I would appreciate that someone please could tell me if this seats right for him.

Also, if someone knows proper tanks that sell in Amazon or other platforms I would be really gratefull if you could pass me links :D

Finally, I'm open to any tips in general about everything, thanks in advance and sorry if I have any redaction mistakes, English is not my first language T_T

🐹 Taming 🐹 New to hamsters, any taming tips?

Post image

Hi everyone! I just got a new male syrian hamster yesterday. At the pet store he was super friendly and explorative to me, and when I brought him home and put him in his enclosure he instantly started burrowing in his 10 inch deep bedding, which was so cute!

My question is, when can I expect him to start taking food from my hand? I have a bunch of yummy treats for him (pecans, walnuts, spinach, strawberries, bananas, and mealworms) but I only want to give him these special treats from my hand. I tried last night around 2 am when he was walking about his enclosure (I happen to wake up a lot in the night to pee) and he instantly froze, I tried inching my hand closer but he was just frozen and so I just dropped it and closed the door. He then instantly ate it. Is that a good sign? He seems so scared and I don't wanna scare him more.

Another thing he did is when I was quietly watching him make his burrows, he was hissing and screaming (?) And I have no idea why. I just hope he is doing alright! He hasn't hissed since. Otherwise I've just been watching him snooze the day away.

⭐ Hamster ⭐ Realizing my 40 gallon is too small, whats a reasonable upgrade and when is it best to do it?

I've had Truffle for about a week and after a few adjustments to her tank I was relatively satisfied she had what she needed. As I try to put in more enrichment I am seeing why this minimum size isn't good for her. I would like to upgrade to something more reasonable but I am also still in the timeframe of her not wanting to interact with or see me (maybe its just how she is, don't know yet!)

So basically I don't want to keep disturbing her with changes but I want her to have more space. Can anyone give me some advice on tank size and timing?

(Extra context, I am coming from owning mice and currently own rats)

⭐ Hamster ⭐ Sleep like this?

Anyone’s hamster sleeps with their bottom sticking out like this? Why would they do this? She is sleep because we checked on her 10 minutes later and she is still in the same position. Not every day since I’ve only seen this once so far, this is after a clean out and enclosure configuration change.

💖 Health/Care 💖 Postpartum greasy/soggy fur on my hamster Maggie, should I be worried?

Hello hamster lovers!

So here is my hamster Maggie, a cutie who has been with me since April. She had babies (I already separated them after they weaned, a week or so ago), and ever since she gave birth she's had this weird postpartum "condition" where her fur looks soggy (see the images) for some reason.

She has a sandbath that is always cleaned and sifted through regularly, and it's been with her since the day she stepped foot (or paw? XD) in her 120cm x 70cm enclosure.

Is this a cause for concern? She doesn't look or act lethargic at all, she eats a lot (no fatshaming!), and she's as affectionate as ever. She seems very healthy to me, aside from a little dip in weight and her.. "bad hair day".

Has anyone else's hamster gone through this after raising a litter? Any advice is appreciated!

I am a new (ish) hamster owner, I’ve had her for almost a year now and just realised I never got any advice on my setup! I always ensure my animals have the recommended care they need when buying however, would love to get some more advice on her home. So.. rate her setup!

Extra info:
My hamster, Leftie, was a rescue as she had been born with a broken leg, so there’s not much clutter so she can get around easily. She is a female Russian dwarf hamster.

she has 13inches of paper bedding (yes some is coloured I bought it and put it in before realising it needs to be undyed so took out as much as I could!

Her wheel is 26.5cm brand is Breenhill on amazon.

Cage is BUCATSTATE

She doesn't come out until like 3:00 a.m. so it's rare for me to see her..

I've not had her too long, but I really love her!

Also I really want to get some cork to go on my wheel so if you have any recommendations I would appreciate it!

🏠 Enclosure/DIY 🏠 DIY Hamster enclosure (180 x 50 x 60 cm (9000 sq cm / 1395 sq in); wood and glass; sliding doors)

Hey folks. Apart from a small lock for the sliding doors, my DIY enclosure is finally finished! Loads of firsts here for me: working with glass, aquarium silicone, sliding channels for the doors, using a staple and caulking gun... Very satisfied with how it came out. I'm still working on the interior but have another month or so to get everything else finished. :)

One pic for the initial post, more detailed shots in the replies, and a progress timeline in the replies as well!

My girl Po used to have claws that curled over themselves. Rocks didn't work, and nail clipping would be dangerous, so I put some medium grain sandpaper on the platform where she enters/exits her wheel, and next to her water-sandbath area. Within one week, her nails are now back to a normal length! Thought I'd share this in case it wasn't already discovered. ♡
