I think that’s just rational advice at any given time

Surely nothing can go wrong letting anyone with a license operate a 26' truck with no additional training

The state of some of these are dire as well. I rented one last month and the steering wheel had to be angled at 45 degrees just to drive in a straight line lmao

Hopefully you reported that to them, that's a serious wheel alignment needed.

I rented one last December and the wiper fluid was frozen solid. They couldn't even be bothered to put winter fluid in their trucks

right! this here. If you’ve never done it before, ask your dad or a friend with experience

Absolutely, these big box trucks are no joke!

I’ve driven these a dozen times in other cities and I don’t think I’d be willing to drive them within Halifax. The streets are narrow and the pedestrians really jump out of nowhere, and these things are terrible for braking quick.

I've driven them and other large trucks in Halifax, they're not bad if you know what you're doing, and of course look for pedestrians all the time

they're not bad if you know what you're doing

Bolded the part that makes all the difference

So true,  I'd be doing 30 the whole way. I've only driven in a city with much larger streets and even that was quite the challenge.

They don’t go much faster than that in the city anyway.

I've always found this insane. "I can barely drive a car! I'm sure I can drive this massive truck that should need a special license!"

Genuineley if you're a good driver and not an idiot you can handle one of these on normal roads in good conditions. The same awareness of your vehicle that you need to drive anything else also applies here. The extras are a general awareness of the fact that a very big heavy thing doesn't start or stop quickly. I didn't receive anything other than the keys and managed multiple runs with a full heavy load in generally wide streets but with one very tricky back in.

After reading what I wrote i think i might be too generous where other people are concerned. It all feels like common sense and knowing your limits to me.

I agree with you, but I'd wager a good portion of drivers aren't good enough to drive a 26'

You also need to learn how to do wide turns. The wheelbase is so long on the 26' one you'll cut the curb on right turns if you don't pull out a bit first. You figure it out as you go, but it's not at all the same as driving a yaris or whatever if that's what you're used to

I couldn't believe the first time I rented one of these and they just handed me the keys and said good luck. Definitely could have crushed some toes on the first few turns I took with it.

And no safety inspections

Fun fact w5 did an investigative report on uhauls i wanna say 7 to 10 years back and found that 11/12 would not pass inspection which is why the company registers them out of Arizona for some kinda loophole

When the governments decided to strengthen borders and require passports it’s should have been the shutting the international registration plan down.. and now with Americans doing what they’re doing it should be a no brainer…

These American corporations shouldn’t be allowed to undercut local laws and businesses.

You have no idea you should have seen the one that's been on bayers road the last few days.....come to think of it.... did the driver of the one there on Joe howe look like east asian maybe phillipino?

Hope they paid for the extra insurance.

It appears that the driver was exceeding the speed limit, smashed into the power pole and then smashed head on into a tree with such force that the upper half of it snapped off. The driver looked like he was around 20.

8

u/instanoodles84 12d ago

Well that's going to be expensive.

I wouldn't be surprised if neither their uhaul extra insurance or their regular car insurance if they have any will cover this mess.

Oooo in a U-Haul too, extra shitty

u/Spirited_Milk21 12d ago

As my villages designated UHaul driver, I’ve had nightmares about this.

u/ianfixesdents 12d ago

I drove by just after it happened. They went through a power pole and a very large tree. Made a mess of the truck too. Full of furniture with two 20 somethings wandering around in a daze. That’s going to be a bummer afternoon.

looks like they hit a power pole or at least took down the power lines, that is going to be a very expensive move

Moving day not off to a great start it seems.

Let’s simplify it:

Avoid driving in HRM at any time, especially on or around the peninsula.

People would hate this idea but as someone who lives in this area, people drive waaaaaay too fucking fast in this stretch and I think they should put it down to one lane in both directions.

Speed bumps

6

u/ThroatPuncher Halifax 12d ago

I’d take that. Currently the speed radar does nothing and it’s been there for a year now.

4

u/MoschinoMissionary 12d ago

Sorry but that’s just not a good idea. It’s a main artery into and out of the city

8

u/ThroatPuncher Halifax 12d ago

Not all of Joe Howe but from Springvale to the Rotary they do not need two lanes. It creates an illusion that you aren’t driving the speed you might thing you are because it’s a big wide open section of the street.
My neighbour petitioned hard to get a speed clock to help slow people down. It doesn’t work. I try to turn into my street and I have people so close to my rear that I’m surprised I haven’t been hit yet. There is a lot of young family in this area and a lot of us are fucking tired of the constant speed and lack of the city doing anything

Once upon a time HRP you put a cop car mid span and I’ll tell ya, you could probably bring taxes down thru speeding tickets in this stretch.

Joe Howe runs across the city. Most people coming into the city through the rotary come through Herring Cove Road or St Margaret’s Bay and go to Quinpool or Chebucto. It’s the least busy exit at the rotary. It’s busiest between Mumford and the 102. It’s much less busy than Connaught.

It should be traffic calmed.

A lot of words to not dispute what I said 😂

1

u/mediocretent 12d ago

Seems the main traffic flow is between Joseph Howe @ Exit 0 and Exchange or up to Mumford. Whenever I drive past Mumford on Joe Howe I find it very quiet in comparison.

Mrs. pink purse better hope she wasn't the renter on that uhaul.

Wonder if it was boyfriend driving? And if so wonder how long before pink purse curbs his ass?
