Discussion Thinking of Rehtaeh Parsons

The Cornell 7 case is stirring up a lot of anger.

Got me thinking about how this shit has been going on forever.

Rehtaeh didnt get justice either and her rapists are walking around unnamed. Fuck them, fuck the RCMP who failed her, fuck the men who think this isn't a big deal, and pre-emptively fuck anyone who tries to argue about this.

RIP sweet girl. We all failed you in the worst possible ways.

It's really the Cornell 57. Bystanders in the group chat need to be held to account too.

96

u/Loud_Indication1054 12d ago

I count it as 61, 4 administrators didn't do anything either

22

u/YouNeedCheeses 12d ago

B-but they made them write an essay!

4

u/indestructibleorange 12d ago

Not to diminish the severity of the case, but administrators did do something. There were at least 2 expulsions and multiple suspensions, and the university shut down that frat that they were part of. The university did not publicise who got expelled or suspended, because its their policy to keep the records of student punishments private.

I will also add that no university has the right to prosecute rapists (that's the job of the state), it seems like they can only do what is in their power as an educational institution, ie suspend or expel.

10

u/gingerandgin 12d ago

…. They could report the crime. But they didn’t.

4

u/indestructibleorange 12d ago

The victim already reported the crime to the police. I believe the reason why no criminal case was brought forward in 2024, was because the state prosecutor felt there was insufficient evidence or some bullshit. The state definitely failed her here.

Also, universities SHOULD NOT be indiscriminately reporting crimes without the victim's consent. Lots of women choose not to report sexual assault and rape because they just can't handle recounting and reliving the entire traumatic experience in order to give statements. Their wishes should be respected.

I'm not saying the university did everything right, btw. I'm sure they could have done better to support her. I'm just trying to provide facts.

Fifty Six. One dude was asleep for it all, and sent Jane Doe the screenshots when he discovered them.

11

u/FancyRavenclaw 12d ago

I thought there was one credible one who didn’t see the text until morning, and sent it to Jane Doe?

11

u/DJ_JOWZY 12d ago

If that ends up being true, the number only changes to 56.

19

u/mikelwrnc 13d ago

Absolutely.

Ugh this

1

u/BallsDieppe 12d ago

What should be done to punish individuals who were part of a group chat?

7

u/childofcrow Prince Edward Island 12d ago

They should be charged as accessories because they knew about it happening and did nothing.

It is the same as any other crime. If you know that your buddy fucking killed somebody and where they put the body, if you sit on that information and don’t tell the cops, you are an accessory to that crime.

4

u/DJ_JOWZY 12d ago

What happens if someone knows of a murder but doesn't report it?

1

u/childofcrow Prince Edward Island 12d ago

I’m not going to post the list here, but the list of the people on that group chat has been posted. You can find it if you look for it, but I am not going to post it here because there’s no credible source that it is public information.

Basically, I don’t want to be accused of doxxing anybody.

0

u/OutdoorRink 12d ago

One of the people in the group chat that you want to publicly shame and who has already been publicly shamed by others was the whistleblower and the one who sent the screenshots to the authorities. This is why people don't come forward and this is why people don't do the right thing. It's people like you who fuck it up for others.

You think being on a 56-person text thread makes you culpable for something? I'm on a hundred giant threads and I read about 4% of the content. You're the reason why nobody takes this shit seriously anymore. You're being absurd.

If the allegations against this young woman are true, there's not a person in the world that doesn't feel bad for her and want justice served.

5

u/DJ_JOWZY 12d ago

Ignoring memes in a group chat is nowhere the same as ignoring an ongoing sexual assault.

It's incredibly concerning you are trying to equate the two.

I should've figured you were a bonafide rape apologist. Let me guess, she wanted it? She wanted to be off her mind on ketamine and having a train of strangers run on her for 7 hours? Just like all women?

I know you deleted this comment but not before it hit my inbox. What a fucked-up thing for you to allege. And you wonder why people don't believe accusers. People like you are the exact reason. You should be ashamed of yourself. But I know you don't have the self-awareness so I feel sorry for you.

There's only one of us who's dealing in fact. You're making allegations that are complete and utter fucking nonsense. This is not why people don't come forward. The whistleblower doesn't care about being shamed for 48 hours if they end up being exonerated later on.

Regardless, it's still 56/57 or 98% of the entire group chat.

0

u/OutdoorRink 12d ago

You think that 56 of them read the text? What reality are you living in where makes any sense?

I really hope the Cornell 7 get the Brock Turner treatment and get their names forever shared in textbooks and also get what they deserve. Jail time and to be known by people forever for what they did after distroying an innocent females life.

Men scare me and I'm a male.

180

u/BarackTrudeau 12d ago

Cornell 7?

You mean the rapists Matthew Ingalls, Jonathan Newell, Winston Lee, Gillio Lopes, Diego Sarabia, Scott Norris, and Scott Kretzschmar? Those rapists?

24

u/SuperNintenerd Cape Breton 12d ago

Yes those dreadful human beings for ruining someone's life. I hope these names never disappear and are brought up everytime something like this happens

20

u/paisley_life Dartmouth 12d ago

And every single one of the 57 cowards who read what was going on and did nothing.

13

u/jxmac not a robot 12d ago

Yeah the Cornell 7 sounds like a proud title it’s weird

10

u/childofcrow Prince Edward Island 12d ago

Yep.

This is publicly available information that was shared by the courts. It’s not doxxing them if they are named in court documents.

8

u/DeathOneSix 🌽 Ask me about corn 🌽 12d ago

Yeah I've gotten at least one report on the names, but I put it into google and got news media reporting of it. It's public information at this point.

4

u/childofcrow Prince Edward Island 12d ago

I just wanted to leave that comment because I didn’t want the comment to be reported for doxxing. It’s all publicly available information and I figured that the mods would see it and do their due diligence.

So thanks for backing me up. It’s appreciated. It’s publicly available information, and these people should be out there.

31

u/brianne----- 12d ago

14

u/ziobrop Flair Guru 12d ago

Brock turner served 3 months, + probation.
he now uses his middle name, Allan.

he faced consequences, but still just got a slap on the wrist.

-3

u/bz47uj 12d ago

He had to register for life as a sex offender.

8

u/ziobrop Flair Guru 12d ago

I think that's probably less of an impediment then most people think. Just because hes on a list, doesnt mean folks are going to look, or find.

2

u/bz47uj 12d ago edited 12d ago

It doesn't just mean being put on a list. It means he has to report to the sheriff every 90 days to verify his address, employment, and education. He has to register any vehicles available to him, professional licences, phone numbers, email address, internet handles. Changes to any of these have to be reported within three days.

Every time he moves, he has to notify certain members of the community including all of his neighbours. He can't live within 1,000 feet of a school, preschool, or daycare. He has to give 20 days advance notice before moving to a new county within Ohio. If he moves to another state, he has to abide by their sex registry rules as well.

He also has to report international travel 21 days ahead of time.

Failure to do any of this is a felony. Sex offenders are not treated well in U.S. prison.

Any time he applies for a job, admission to a university, or for professional licensing, they will find that he is sex offender.

It's a pretty life-altering consequence.

3

u/TheSweetKiwi 12d ago

That is a slap on the wrist. You don’t think he should have gone to jail for life for raping someone?

0

u/bz47uj 12d ago

I didn't say anything about what he deserved. But I strongly disagree that being put on a sex offender registry is a slap on the wrist.

1

u/TheSweetKiwi 11d ago

It is absolutely a slap on the wrist for a rapist to get no jail time

1

u/bz47uj 11d ago

He did get jail time.

1

u/TheSweetKiwi 11d ago

Three months dude. Why are you so vehemently defending a rapist……..?

1

u/bz47uj 11d ago

How am I defending him?

2

u/childofcrow Prince Edward Island 12d ago

He got caught with his dick in an unconscious person, served three months in prison and has to be on a registry that very few people who are going to date him are going to check for the rest of his life?

What a horrific strategy for him. Won’t somebody think about him?

0

u/bz47uj 12d ago edited 12d ago

I'm not saying it's a tragedy or that he didn't deserve it. I'm saying he was punished much more severly than just three months in prison plus probation.

3

u/childofcrow Prince Edward Island 12d ago

He served three months in prison.
He has to register as a sex offender.

Oh no.

-1

u/bz47uj 12d ago

What is the point of this comment?

48

u/geckospots 12d ago

You mean the Brock Allen Turner the rapist treatment, right? Where we remind each other in perpetuity that Brock Allen Turner is a rapist whenever we see his name mentioned online?

30

u/SuperNintenerd Cape Breton 12d ago

The exact same treatment. Always shared and always bring it up to never forget how horrific he is.

I think Matthew Ingalls, Johnathon Newell, Winston Lee, Gillio Lopes, Diego Sarabia, Scott Norris and Scott Kretzschmar are dreadful people and should be known for what they did and know that their names will always be around forever

11

u/Auntie_Vodka 12d ago

Yep, we shouldn't sanitize the CRIME by just giving the rapists an out under "the Cornell 7"

6

u/RainbowNarwhal13 12d ago

To be fair, it's a lot quicker and easier to say than listing out 7 full names. But maybe we should change it to the 7 rapists, instead :)

13

u/SoloRemy 12d ago

You mean the rapist Brock Allen Turner who goes by just Allen Turner these days?

3

u/geckospots 12d ago

That is indeed the specific rapist I am talking about, by which I mean the rapist Brock Allen Turner.

42

That's because he is identifying with the rapists, not with the victim. That's an orange/red flag to me.

15

u/Mammoth_Implement1 12d ago

That's perfectly framed/worded, that he "identifies with" the rapists and not with the victim.

4

u/Xalipu 12d ago

who would ever even think like that

Someone who would respond to a group text message.

5

u/DreyaNova 12d ago

I lost my shit at a classmate in first year university when this first came out because he said something similar. Then I had a panic attack and sat outside and my lovely professor came to sit with me and said some really nice words to me. This was pre "Me Too" and I feel like people forget exactly how different the climate surrounding sexual assault was back then.

It's weird how simultaneously so much has changed in 15 years and at the same time nothing has changed.

15

u/aseverin82 12d ago edited 12d ago

This is the problem from the beginning. If a man's opinion is to focus on the victim instead of the pathological behaviour that causes it we need a full culture shift. I really hope for humankind that person is not in a relationship.

15

1

u/Historical_Bed_2258 9d ago

I know someone who was in his (KB) class at school. KB looked at him on the playground one day, said “hey, come here”, then pushed him over (my friend was a scrawny kid), held him down, and stomped on his collarbone, breaking it. Third grade.

20

u/zcewaunt 12d ago

Well said OP. 57 men in that group chat. Not one reported it. Same for those invited to assault Giselle Pelicot or who saw the videos.

9

u/Ok_Wing8459 12d ago

God forbid one of the 50 should speak up/report it. They might not have gotten invited to the next party. I don’t know whether this is peer pressure at its worst or it just a lot of men that age are this unfeeling. Where did all the decent guys go?

4

u/childofcrow Prince Edward Island 12d ago

And the thing is, in that case, a lot of people were brought in for questioning and charged. That case was groundbreaking.

3

u/_hey_ref_ 12d ago

Depp’s lawsuit in the UK was against the Scum, sorry, the Sun. They have a very chequered reporting history — ask any Liverpool FC or Liverpool resident. Also, Depp tried and failed to compel Heard to testify and hand over recordings. Whatever recordings Depp got were edited down and shortened, limiting the effectiveness of his defence. Also, especially hurts when Heard really couldn’t be cross examined live unlike the US trial. If your allegations are that strong, why would you edit and shorten the voice recordings. UK law is also more lenient to hearsay vs US law. There were allegations that one of the judges had a conflict of interest between Heard’s lawyer, and an allegation the judge met Heard prior at a dinner party.

Depp’s lawsuit in the US was against Heard and the NYT. That meant Heard was compelled to testify and that her evidence would be challenged in court. Also, the burden of proof was on Depp to prove the allegations were false, not for Heard to say they were true.

Bottom line, Heard’s allegations in the UK weren’t able to effectively be rebutted because she didn’t have to answer questions, whereas she had to in the US. She got caught lying, multiple times. If you’re dead set that your partner “abused you”, why would you outright lie on minuscule and important points?

Sorry, Depp may not have been a saint, but no one should have time for proven liars.

3

u/Andy47xxy 12d ago

If you look over the history of domestic violence, sexual assault, and power dynamics in relationships and courtrooms you'll see a consistent trend that rapists and abusers get light sentences if any sentences at all

https://www.rstreet.org/research/from-victim-to-defendant-how-justice-falls-short-for-women/

-2

u/_hey_ref_ 12d ago

It's very different to why Me Too failed, which is selfish and narcissistic women making false allegations which take away from those who have legitimate allegations.

Stay on topic.

7

u/Andy47xxy 12d ago

I am on topic, the justice system fails women and the only way they can see justice is to play the perfect victim in court, any emotion that doesn't portray weakness is scrutinized, you fight back against your abuser well thats "mutual abuse" so your lying

Johnny Depp is double her age, well known and popular and well connected, and that court was televised and pushed on every platform to scrutinize every action in that court

The jury found Depp entertaining, and Heard unbearable like were watching a reality tv series instead of a court of law

4

u/_hey_ref_ 12d ago

> Johnny Depp is double her age, well known and popular and well connected, and that court was televised and pushed on every platform to scrutinize every action in that court

So you're saying it's OK for people to blast accused over unfounded allegations but not OK for the accused to fight back?

This is also why people have been turning their back on Me too. Equal rights, but only when it's convenient. You can't have your cake and eat it, too.

> The jury found Depp entertaining, and Heard unbearable like were watching a reality tv series instead of a court of law

Heard was caught lying on the stand, multiple times. She obliterated her own credibility, not Johnny.

Try re-watching the whole trial from an unbiased lense.

The craziest thing that I remember about that whole thing was the mother's of the rapists protesting out in front of the police station on Gottingen. Like wtf.

19

u/echiker 12d ago

It was their families and friends and just general community from Eastern Passage. It was big - like probably 50 or 60ish people as I remember it.

They covered the area in hundreds of posters that said things like "Support The Boys" and "There's two sides to every story." People who actually lived in the Gottingen street area spent days ripping them all down.

4

u/No_Influencer 13d ago

You what?! Protesting because they’d arrested him? Or protesting because they hadn’t?

14

u/__Nels__Oleson__ 13d ago

It was multiple people because it was multiple rapists. I still don't understand what they were on about. I think they thought their boys were innocent in some way and the police were out of line or something. You might be able to find the story somewhere online.

Not all socially conservative people think Trans women are trying to rape little girls in bathrooms or inventing scenarios where kids sports are affected by trans folx. That’s a special kind of stupidity, misogyny, and the same fuckin brand as defending rapists. Stop being obtuse.

I hope that the victims of Kyle Brimicombe get justice and that women and children are protected from assault by Kyle Brimicombe going forward.

I still remember seeing her at the hfx tattoo convention/festival. I've never felt so bad for someone I don't know, she just looked so fragile and sad.

it makes me think of the rape chants that dal students did a few years ago..

edit bc i was wrong- it was smu students

u/Paper__ 12d ago edited 12d ago

Dal had the Dentistry Private Chat that spoke about how they’d like to sexually assault their soon-to-be patients when they were under.

In this one, the only person meaningfully punished was the woman that leaked the story to the press. I believe she was expelled. The rest were able to graduate. I may have that memory wrong though.

u/sweetangle787 12d ago

SMU*** i was a frosh that year when they were chanting. If i recall correctly, it was something like “SMU boys, we like them young. Y is for your sister, o is for “oh so tight”, u is for underage, n is for no consent, and g is for grab that ass”…in 2013, so what, 1-2 year after rehtaeh died? So disgusting.

2

u/MaxFourr 12d ago

oh i thought dal did it too! but yes that's the exact chant i thought about🤮

6

u/SoloRemy 12d ago

You might be thinking of the Dal dental student’s group chat. That was pretty gnarly too

2

u/MaxFourr 12d ago

ohhh yeah that's probably it!

I was at a party with one of the guys involved one time. Don't remember his name (was drunk) but someone pointed him out to me and said that he was involved. Made sure to never associate with the group of people that hosted that party ever again.

As a woman who supports, loves and believes victims of violence, the best tool we have right now is to name and shame.

If we expose perpetrators of violence, we keep others safe. If you know exactly who the bad person is, you can at least make an effort to stay away from them.

6 years ago, someone approached me and told me that a friend of mine had victimized several women. I didn't approach the friend and ask for their side, I just literally never talked to them again. They were never really brought up again in the friend group.

Its a weird world we live in. We equate the pain/suffering of having someone "ruin your reputation" to the suffering of potentially never feeling safe in your own body again.

I believe you, I see you, I'm here.

Yep, my husband had three BEST friends before we married, we spent all our time as a group, they’re all over our wedding photos.. we found out that one of those three tried to take advantage of a female friend they’d all been close with since elementary school when she was near passed out. It’s probably been about 8-9 years and none of us have spoken to, or about him. Sometimes I get a pang of sadness thinking about him, we were all SO close. But we have to set boundaries and hold these people accountable.

u/RadiantYesterday523 12d ago

Thankfully you’re a small minority of individuals that think this way. My ex gf was an abusive narcissist who almost certainly played the victim after I broke up with her and said all kinds of nasty things about me. Luckily my female friends saw right through it and stuck by me, because they have common sense and can make an objective decision on their own. Imagine if more people thought like you and ex communicated their friends because someone made something up, what a terrible world we would live in.

Why are you in this conversation? Read the room.

Because I have the same right to be in this conversation as you do. If you don’t like democracy you’re in the wrong country. Read the room.

u/i-Hermit 12d ago

I assume you knew and trusted that someone enough to make a decision like that?

2

u/tootnoodler 12d ago

I did! But also it wouldn't matter if I did know them. I gave the first example that popped into my head of a horrifically long list of examples that include many folks that were practical strangers.

The point I am making is: If you can't live with the social consequences of being accused of doing sexual violence, then don't act in a way where sexual violence may IN ANY WAY be deduced. Its that fucking simple.

Ive been on this planet for over 30 years and not one person has said my behavior has been sexually violent. Why? Because I respect the autonomy and consent of others!

u/i-Hermit 12d ago

Wow.

-1

u/RadiantYesterday523 12d ago

Right lol I’m completely flabbergasted at their response too. Totally unhinged to pretend that women never make stuff up and act malicious when a breakup doesn’t go their way. Happens millions of times everyday around the world

u/EnvironmentOk2700 12d ago

Why would the default be not believing her, when that is much less likely? And I'd argue, has much more potential to be harmful.

It would be weird for a total stranger to approach you with something like this, unless they felt you were in danger and they had a duty to

6

u/i-Hermit 12d ago

I only asked because that sort of thing coming from someone you know would and should carry a lot more weight. Like, you wouldn't accept the word of a complete stranger for something like that would you?

I dunno.. people can be crazy, so some skepticism is never a bad idea. That doesn't mean don't believe people, only that due diligence is important.

4

u/EnvironmentOk2700 12d ago

I've been on both sides a number of times, and the person warning always turned out to be correct. And I've looked at the stats, so my skepticism skews towards believing the victim.

0

u/OrangeRising 12d ago

Indeed. Two of my friends were falsely accuses of SA while in college and were at serious risk of being removed. Thankfully a security camera was near by where she said it happened and they were both willing to take polygraph tests (Although they didn't end up taking one as she admitted to making it up).

Unfortunately it seems some people will look at real cases and try to spin it to justify their own hatreds.

6

u/EnvironmentOk2700 12d ago

Cases like this are unfortunate but extremely rare. Unfortunately, sexual assault is extremely common.

1

u/OrangeRising 12d ago

Agreed, but still shows why someone accusing a person of something awful doesn't mean they are guilty.

2

u/Deep_Movie_3471 12d ago

Didn’t anonymous get involved and name the Suspects?

4

u/Section1ne0h4our 12d ago

Yeah but the issue was they named multiple people who weren’t even there, one wasn’t even in the province, the other was one of their brothers who was like 9 at the time?

They did, however, name those who were accurately involved amongst that group of names

1

u/Clayspinner 13d ago edited 12d ago

It wasn’t the RCMP. It’s up to the prosecutor to lay charges. The rcmp collect evidence and present it. That part was done. The charges didn’t happen.

Edit. To make it clearer

The RCMP (police) investigates crimes and lays the initial criminal charges in most provinces.

The Prosecutor (Crown Attorney) decides whether to proceed with, alter, or drop those charges once they reach court.

13

u/theRealJudyGreer 12d ago

Reposting without the curse...

Rcmp failed to perform their role in collection of evidence. I believe strongly this is because they were on the boys' side.

Also, adding... fuck the prosecutors too

13

u/tootnoodler 12d ago

If this is your hill then so be it, but FUCK the rcmp and all canadian law enforcement for their decades of betraying victims of violence. Seriously.

9

u/Clayspinner 12d ago

It’s not really a hill. I was commenting on this case in particular and the facts of what happened. Wasn’t referencing anything else while highlighting how it works. And I don’t disagree with the sentiments of many others.

Police lay charges. Prosecutors prosecute.

8

u/theRealJudyGreer 12d ago

Fuck the prosecutors too then.

“A year following the alleged rape, the RCMP concluded an investigation stating, "[an] investigation into an earlier sexual assault was completed, and in consultation with the Crown, there was insufficient evidence to lay charges". According to the family, the boys were not questioned and their phones were not reviewed for the photograph of the rape in progress. Instead, the police called it a "he said, she said" case and also decided the photo was not criminal, in spite of Parsons being a minor”

They didnt even look at the boys’ phones. The RCMP are just as complicit as the prosecutors
