Huey (named after the Bell UH-1 Iroquois utility helicopter) is a service dog in training. Part of his training is to get well accustomed to crowded and loud places surrounded by a lot of humans. You should never pet a service dog without permission; however, we were given full permission to spoil him rotten with pets as part of his socialization process. He is only 8 months old and well on his way to help a veteran deal with their challenges.

This is Bruno a 3 year old unaltered male Great Dane. I'm sharing him from a YouTube channel Heather's shelter pals.

He's very friendly allows touch all over has tested well with at least one other dog (a female husky). He knows sit and shake so he's clearly amenable to training. I think you'll agree he's still got puppy energy and I think if you're interested in rescues either in the Modesto California area or can arrange transport with the shelter Bruno could use a helping paw 🐾

New Owner Slow feeders

Post image
52 Upvotes

Hi all! My puppo is 13 weeks, and is struggling to slow down his eating. For breakfast we tend to use a slow feeder that’s small so I break up his meal into like 6-12 separate fills for the feeder so he doesn’t eat it too fast. Lunch, we do a freezbone and he is usually fine with that (takes him like 20-30 mins) but sometimes he reaches the end and tries to just swallow the entire frozen puck at the bottom. Dinner, we hand feed so he’s not too fast and so we can use it for training.

Question is, how do we teach him to slow down while eating? He tends to rush so much that he gets hiccups or like regurgitates his food back down (ewww). When either of these happens, we make him stop eating for a few minutes to process.

I think it’ll maybe get better in a few weeks when we switch down to 2 meals a day instead of 3 but I don’t know if that will make it worse. Any recommendations? Or just let him learn on his own? Obviously we’re panicked to high hell about bloat so trying to teach him good habits early! Pic for pup tax!

Q and Maybe Some A’s Maybe Adopting 3 year old - questions. To help make sure I can give her her best life

Hi all!

I'm thinking about adopting a 3 yr old(they're estimating) female great dane.

We know she was a breed dog and was dumped and has some trauma that she'll be working through (and may never get over) mostly around abandonment.

I've had big dogs but nothing as big as her. A lot of the articles I can find about best practices and supplies end up as advertisement blog posts.

I have a couple specific questions. -

How much are y'all feeding your "adult" danes a day? Or spending in a month on food?

She wasnt at all drooly when I met her but she also seemed pretty stressed - how much drool should I brace for?

How does your Dane do with travelling by car? I would love (and I know that this will vary greatly by dog and personality) to be able to take her to work with me - work would love to have a dog on site. Is that something you think your Dane would tolerate?

Was there anything that surprised you when you got your first Dane?

Thanks in advance!

Q and Maybe Some A’s Puppy timeline

We recently & very unexpectedly lost our 4yo dane. A year before that, we lost our other 2 senior dogs. We are tired of losing dogs, but our house and hearts are so empty without a dog, especially a dane sized dog.

We have decided to get a puppy, in the hopes that we will have years and years with it. Here’s the catch, we have a 1yo child. I KNOW, terrible idea. But 1. I am scared to adopt an adult dog and bring it into our home with our child without knowing its history. 2. I do not want to wait until our child is older, bc we plan to keep having more children. If there’s ever a time to get a puppy, now’s the time with only 1 child.

I’m very familiar with puppies, we fostered a puppy basset hound for a while, including having to potty train him from scratch. But I’ve never had or been around a puppy dane, despite having 5 danes in my lifetime.

What are their temperaments? How long before turning into a couch potato? How quickly did your puppy catch onto training? What month can I expect it to become manageable? If you’ve done a puppy with a toddler, how it go?

I know it’s going to be extremely difficult, it’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make. I just want a general idea of when to expect a light at the end of the tunnel. *currently don’t have the puppy yet

About a year and a half ago I posted in this group that we’d lost our minds and decided to get 2 Danes from the same litter. The negative response was wild. Just wanted to update ya.
THIS WAS THE BEST DECISION EVER!!
These 2 are polar opposite personalities 😂
Thunder ( male mearl) is a big goofy dude, super obedient, a dad’s boy through and through.
River (female black) just the biggest sweet heart you’ve ever seen, very very soft temperament, and is attached to her momma at the hip. ( Will literally nudged her to the couch for cuddles 😂

We have had not issues at all with liter mate syndrome a though they are best buddies. They love their siblings too! ( pics are most recent to about a year ago)

Q and Maybe Some A’s Orthopedic bed ?

Post image
133 Upvotes

Panzer woke me up at 0400 howling in pain. His old left hip injury had flared up. I tried to massage it and he howled in pain and loosed a stream of urine all over me and the floor. He’s back to normal now and playing like a pup w Maus but last night was a warno. I’m looking for a proper orthopedic bed vs the the 50-70$ Amazon specials I’ve used. Cost isn’t an issue, I would sell one of my kidneys if it meant Panzer has less pain.
Still planning on taking him up to the lookout tower next week for his 8th birthday if we don’t get another flare up.
Not sure how a 7-10 service at the tower will be without Panzer at my side clapping back at the coyotes and watching over me on the late night runs to the outhouse (we share the Mountian with a cougar). Maus is still a long way off before being trusted around wildlife

Q and Maybe Some A’s Issues with back feet

Our Dane seems to have issues on her back feet between her middle toes on both feet. They’re these little circle patches of skin on each toe that seem to rub against each other and cause her to limp sometimes. We’ve seen her vet who prescribed us some ointment last week to treat the skin but it’s just not working. We’ve been following the vets direction. We’re going back this week again but I was curious if anyone else has had this issue. Not sure what this is.

Q and Maybe Some A’s How are you navigating young children with your dane?

I rescued my girl in June. She was about six months. My son had just turned a year old. I specifically got her because of how she interacted with him. When we told her to leave him alone, she responded immediately and I was impressed.

Fast forward to now, my son is 16mo and she’s about 10mo. She’s my height when she stands up and I’m 5’4, and she’s pushing 80lbs. She tends to knock my son over, a lot. It’s always an accident, and she genuinely has no idea how big she is, or that there’s not enough room for her and him to both walk between something like two couches. Unfortunately, my son has a meltdown every single time. She gets excited and her tail will slap him in the face, another meltdown. She will lay on the couch or ground and accidentally kick my son in the face, more meltdowns. It’s getting exhausting. The amount of times she’s jumped over him or accidentally grazed him by doing something similar is astronomical. He has gotten scratched up a few times, and has very bad meltdowns. The first month of having her was actually awful because of all the crying. Every morning I loathed getting out of bed knowing the first 30min of the day was going to be crying and simultaneously trying to calm the dog down.

I understand she’s a puppy, but will this pass? Will she ever know her size? We have four cats and it’s become very apparent that he likes small animals. He gets excited when he sees dogs like frenchies, chihuahuas, poodles, etc. Big dogs, forget about it. I feel bad that I got a dog that is so big and causing this turmoil for him. I’m just in fear that the next four years of my son being so little will continue to be like this.

Only this past month he has decided to start giving her pats on the back, and will sometimes play with his cars on her back or tummy. It does give me a little hope, but overall the meltdowns from all the other issues keep happening.

She is a good girl, but I have gotten some comments about how dumb and naive I was to think it would work out with getting a big dog with a young child. Honestly I am really starting to feel this way.

Dane Discussions Looking for advice on Great Dane allergy and paw issues please help!!!!

Hi guys! So my mom recently had an adult female Great Dane she adopted that we had to put down. My brother decided he’d like a dog and hoped it would fill a void with my mom. I helped him find a reputable breeder who had a good track record and went with him to pick up the pup. The puppy is almost a year old and is a healthy giant monster with Disney goofy’s characters personality. Granted he’s very picky with the food but I’m pretty sure my mom had a hand in designing that lol. Six months or so ago we noticed he had started developing allergies. He would get bumps around his mouth that looked like red pimples (no white heads) and they would open up and bleed every now and then. We also noticed he was starting to get these decent sized bumps on his paws. These paw masses always eventually open up ooze fluid a little plus too but mostly just blood. My brothers highly paranoid because of the issues my moms late Great Dane had so he’s done everything he possibly can to figure out the problem. He has switched foods as much as possible on a scale from kibble to completely raw and no change. He has paid for two types of allergy testing and all that’s come back is an allergy to mites. He’s had the pup on every allergy medication under the sun and even allergy injections as well as steroids and anti-biotics. Even though there is definitely a paranoia from the last bad experience there was a similarity. The late Great Dane did develop masses on her paws and the only difference was size and severity. To be clear though the late Great Dane came from a very abusive home and had so much wrong with her before my mom adopted her. I also own a mastiff larger breed dogo Argentino. My dog and his brother have very bad skin allergies. Though the allergies tend to mess with their coats it doesn’t seem to irritate them at all and they are extremely healthy and happy so I’m more of the type to just let the dog be happy being a dog. I told my brother I would do anything I could to help him figure it out so I’ve contacted a bunch of Dane breeders with almost no responses. I’m hoping someone on here could at least help steer us in a more progressive direction. I’ve included some pictures hopefully they’re good enough. Thanks in advance for your time and responses!

A new study led by researchers at Arizona State University offers the first compelling molecular explanation of why large dogs live shorter lives: the answer may lie in how hallmarks of aging reshape dog DNA. The study was published in Science (DOI: 10.1126/science.aeb2986).

Dane Discussions Moose Uodate

Hi all,

Thanks for your kind words about the Moose Man.

For context, he had intestinal torsion emergency surgery last week, came home we think too early and we had to go back to the vet on Sunday morning after only about 15 hours at home and zero sleep.

So it took them 2 days to break his fever and get him somewhat comfortable, as you can see in the vet he was a lot brighter.

He got diagnosed with a UTI (but we’re not sure when he picked it up) and had been keeping blood intermittently.

This is on top of him having abdominal surgery 48 hours before going back in to the vet, hence the Super Suit pajamas he’s now rocking.

He has a bunch of extra medications to handle the UTI, his pain from surgery, probiotics, a GI motility drug and is just generally fed up at home.

He’s better, but still some distance to go. He’s eating full amounts of his food as we build back up. They sent him home with some cans of Royal Canin GI specific food.

He needs to go to the bathroom pretty frequently as I guess we haven’t kicked the UTI just yet. #2s are getting there slowly, but I have to keep reminding myself that he had major surgery less than a week ago and his body needs to heal.

Basically the plan now is he chills out in his super suit and cone and tries to put on some more weight as he lost about 15lbs in the last couple of weeks.

Next steps will be, hopefully, in 2 weeks as a vet check up and to figure out what food to put him on as an adult; I like the RC stuff but it is pricey.

Dane Discussions Winter/raincoat recommendations

Thumbnail
gallery
88 Upvotes

My 7 month old chaos puppy Butterscotch is a long boy and I’m looking for winter pjs, coat or raincoat recs that might fit him.

I got him the spark paws raincoat in 4XL and it’s too short. He’s 33 inches from collar to base of tail and the coat ends up being6-ish inches too short if I want to cover his neck.

Unfortunately we live in Seattle and he hates the cold rain so potty walks get difficult without some cover. At this point I’m putting him in my tshirts and tying it off the waist.

I’m also a decent sewist so if anyone has any pattern recommendations, I’ll take them! I picked one off Etsy for whippets and tried to adjust for his size and it didn’t work very well 🫠

The secret to a good night’s rest? Let sleeping dogs lie next to you

To be fair, It's all fine until:
1. They settle their internal debate of "tight donut vs sprawl" with the latter
2. They start dreaming about their life goals of running in the Kentucky Derby

Q and Maybe Some A’s Aggression on walks

Thumbnail

Hi there wondering whether there's any advice for our Boris. He has just turned 12 months, coming up on 13 months. Pretty much exactly when he turned 12 months he has started acting increasingly aggressive to other dogs on walks. He has always been boisterous and wanting to play with other dogs, but recently this has turned to aggression.

There doesn't seem to be any other trigger for this other than I now have to hold him back when another dog is in the vicinity, which sometimes I think could be the trigger, however I can't let him loose on his lead, as the main place we walk him is a path with foliage either side, so there nowhere for oncomers to skirt around him (I understand this isn't ideal, and may need to change where we walk him).

The photo of him on the lead is pretty much exactly what he does when he first spots a dog or person from a distance (people he is absolutely fine with). He seems to have eyes capable of zooming to incredible distances...

I've tried everything I can think to distract him when other dogs come close, he's not bothered for treats on walks, sticks are sometimes useful, but this goes out of the window when someone is within say 20 meters. Essentially I have to hunker down and hold him strong while apologising to the person who is understandably terrified of the wolf size creature trying to get to their handbag dog.

I'm hoping that this is a product of his age which he will eventually grow out of, but at the same time, I don't want to have this behaviour ingrained in him while he gets to full maturity. When he has been off lead with other dogs when he was younger he has been ok, a bit of rough play but nothing aggressive.

I think for now we will take him in the car to the nearby park and stay clear of dogs as best possible, but think this is just ignoring the problem.

I think I'm going to take him to doggy daycare under my supervision soon, to try and emphasise that other dogs don't necessarily mean us or him any harm, but any other suggestions would be appreciated.

TLDR: Boris (UK based) has turned aggressive to other dogs on walks, unable to distract him, hoping it's a product of his age, but asking for advice.
