Gaming Spigen launches charging dock stand for Steam Controller

That's rather disappointing, at least the stand should hold the gamepad vertically to save some space.

I think this is dependent on one's specific use-case. Personally, the space I put the controller in requires it lay flat.

Deckmate has had this for months although it's a bit more than this Spigen one

I mean, it's only $15 and their first version. I was honestly expecting it to be $10-15 more.

Cheap disappointment

I've never had any issues with Spigen, myself. I use their case for my Deck and it's done a perfectly cromulent job.

“And this is where I’d charge my steam controller.
If I could get one!!!”

Why even make this if it comes with a charge puck? This is like a 3d print type accessory.
For people not reading this just holds the puck, it doesn’t replace it.

Most people don't have 3d printers, and honestly, 15$ ain't terrible for most people.

Yup, lots free files available online. 3D printed a puck adapter for the Ikea Skadis, it's much more convenient than a table dock.

Sounds good. I’ll just buy a $300 3D printer to print what would otherwise be a $15 puck holder. Profit!

This holds the puck. This is a puck holder. You still need the puck.

I'd be somewhat interested in this if it replaced the puck (at least the charging feature), but this is kinda worthless

I can see the appeal of stands like the Mechanism one, though it's a bit too pricey for me and I don't have a 3D printer, but what's the point of this? It just holds the existing puck and does the same job. The only appeal I can really see in it is if the 90g weight is enough to counteract the pull of the magnets? So you can lift the controller off without having to push down on the puck.

in 2030 when its possible to buy a steam controller this might be useful

Don't worry, you'll get one I got mine on Monday.

I ordered mine about 4hrs after they opened and my estimated wait time is something like “end of 2027” 🫠

I got on list day it launched and got to order in August. So, its slow moving. But it is working through that list.

I recommend getting this: https://getmechanism.com/products/steam-controller-dock
I picked it up and it's made great. They have a lot of cool stuff in general. They even allow you to 3D print it for free if you'd like.

I made a much cooler stand for mine:

Also made one that fits the puck, but I haven't confirmed the fit.

I have kind of a weird use case in that my PC is at my desk, and sometimes I play there (mostly kbam), but I also have the PC hooked up to a 4k TV at the other end of the room via fiber optic HDMI, and that's where most of my controller gaming happens. So I'd really rather have the puck plugged in to the PC for that faster connection, but ALSO have a charging dock over on the TV stand (preferably charging only, I don't really need the controller trying to connect to it). Not sure if that's a big enough niche to justify a project. Edit: I DO think integrating the dongle and charger is a really cool idea, in general. But for my use case, I wish there were a separate dongle and charger.

Holy hell.
I randomly checked Steam one day during a lull between patients and the Steam Controller was available so I tried (like 6 times) and my order went through.
Like I didn't realize how unbelievably lucky I was.
Also this looks worae than the dock itself.

Honestly, priced at fifteen dollars, I'll probably get one once it's available where I live. But I was hoping for a more vertical layout, though.

Not the game controller innovation I was hoping for but cool. I'm lying a little, I prefer wired controllers and this only really helps wireless controllers. I do get the advantage of a wireless controller, no wire and motion controls are easier to actually involve motion but I think wired are better, I also think flat arcade style controllers are better but the cost difference often outweighs that at this time.

I'm holding out for a version of the controller which follows the other layout. The one that the vast majority of Steam users prefers. Primary analog stick beneath left thumb at rest; primary buttons beneath right thumb at rest.
The extra buttons are what appeal to me. First party Xbox pads don't have enough, and I belatedly discovered that the "share button" can't be repurposed for anything useful.

That is not the one the vast majority prefers.

Why are they better though? You won't notice any latency etc, do you just hate charging the wireless controllers?
1
u/Chemical-Struggle-13 5d ago
Multiple things can be true, this can be a nice feature for people who use wireless. But it also isn't really a huge deal unless there wasn't a way to charge it before which seems like a big design flaw that people would talk about.
I sometimes notice latency and inconsistencies when I play with a wireless controller that I don't notice when I play wired. Maybe my controller just isn't very good, maybe I imagined it, maybe people keep falling into the idea that simpler is always better, maybe this is a matter of preference.

If I’m not mistaken this is essentially a holder for the puck, not an alternative.
Yeah first line of the article. It holds the puck.

Good to have an aftermarket option. I don't want to rely on valve to order replacement docks.

So unnecessary when the puck is fine
