Oh this is actually a great idea imo. There really isn't a great enthusiast bike light afaik and Convoy making one/some means it is going to be cheap and still better than common store brands. I genuinely expect this to be a great success.

Lumintop B01

I use this one, I wanted to try the Sofirn BS01 but it seems the mode spacing isn't as good and you need a screw driver to change the 21700 battery.

Lumintop you can leave at high for 2 hours, and bring a spare 21700 and easily swap it if your ride happens to bring you beyond 2 hours at night. I just wish there wasn't a green tint, but at least the 4000k is nice.

I also have a Sofirn HS05 (14500 right angle, discontinued) on my helmet which is a good secondary light, usually on low.

+1 on the not ideal tint. Also something I noticed is the mount that the B01 comes with also fits most standard 21700 tubes. I was able to mount my L21B perfectly and which made a super thrower front light

u/Sypsy Jul 24 '26

The mount is fire, it's very stable and I don't recall it vibrating and causing the beam to shake rapidly. Better than the often mentioned olight one.

Sofern BS01's mode spacing is not good and it has an unregulated driver. It's good enough for short rides but on longer rides the unregulated driver and low sustained output is annoying.

In direct comparison the Lumintop B01 is a little bit better than the Sofirn BS01. But both have the problem of making the close area too bright while leaving the far area's in the dark.

u/Simon676 Jul 25 '26

I find the tint on mine to be perfect, not green at all. Maybe it varies?

2

u/Sypsy Jul 25 '26

It definitely does. I recommended one to my friend and then later he got a second and it was the least green of the three

Also I saw the ui is better. My older one is hold for off

I have both a Lumintop B01 and Sofirn BS01. Both lights don't have the clearest cut-off beam. The Lumintop is even worse than the Sofirn. In general both make the near area very bright while neglecting the far area. That's the area right under the cut-off line which is very important for a bicycle light.

Sofirn BS01 also has a bad, unregulated driver.

Both the Lumintop and Sofirn are of course good enough for shorter rides. You can use them and they work. But they are not good enough to be enthusiast level bike lights.

I had this for a bit, found it lacking

Sofirn BS01?

I've had this on my commuter ebike for years, no issues. On my gravel bike I got a Magicshine 1300 which is nice because it mounts below my Garmin so it doesn't take up additional handlebar space.

There are tons - unless you mean bike lights that're made for regular use as much as for the bike, which, in that case, there's a handful

I live just outside city limits and the 2-lane roads are long/straight with cars doing 50-60mph right next to me, so I want to be as bright as possible AND with a cutoff line so I don't blind oncoming cars/pedestrians. For dedicated, enthusiast-grade lights, I'm a big fan of Outbound Lighting's products - they're high quality and the company has helpful, great support. 2 years ago I picked up their Detour bike light and, if I keep doing my evening rides this winter, plan to get their Hangover helmet light, too. Here's my review I posted on this sub, too

Here's the Detour light on my eMtn Bike. It has great life but practically infinite life since it supports passthrough charging. I plug it into the auxilary plug of my Kiox display... between the light's 5ah and bike's 30ah/1125wh batteries, I can essentially run at/near max brightness for hours

Yes, let's hope Convoy makes something as good but also way cheaper. :-)

So are Convoy flashlights? And in addition to that you can buy spare parts for Convoy flashlights if anything goes wrong.

But of course we have to wait until a Convoy bike light is designed, built, released and tested. Can't say anything now.

Nitecore discontinued a great one

Lumintop B01 is a fantastic bicycle light, it's honestly almost perfect and I don't think you could improve it that much.

Appears to be a follow-up of this post:

Nice! I didn't saw this post. This is probably the online friend Simon talked about

16

u/insomniac-55 Jul 24 '26

Oh, I've been hoping for this for a while. Even emailed Simon about whether he'd consider it, but at the time he said he had no plans.

Bike lights are either horrendously overpriced  or use terrible LEDs and drivers.

There's a big gap in the market for a budget light with the sort of options / features  we're able to get in normal flashlights.

Will definitely be buying one.

2

u/AjBlue7 Jul 30 '26

Yea, and it really requires a purposely designed light because most lights aren’t bright enough, have enough battery, rain resistant or are small/light enough to hold firmly in a mount.

2

u/insomniac-55 Aug 05 '26

I think a 21700 host with a good buck driver  would be perfectly adequate. A side switch rather than tail would be nice, however.

More than a custom host, I'm hoping for firmware that's been optimised for the purpose. Most flashlights lack a suitable daytime strobe function (short, medium brightness flashes with a low duty cycle to provide visibility with extremely long runtime), and few include a combined solid-strobe mode for night use.

Strobe modes usually don't include variable brightness, either (yeah, Anduril can do it but it's not as convenient as the main modes).

Looks nice. Been wanting an aspheric Convoy for a while now. There’s just something special about aspherics.

4

u/Mackillroy Jul 24 '26

What’s special about them?

18

u/CookieDave Batteries go in, light comes out. Jul 24 '26

I just think they're neat

Honestly, I just have a soft spot for them. Clean, even beam with a sharp cutoff, illuminating exactly what I want, and nothing more. Sure, there are zoomies that do the same, but I want fixed focus aspherics, not a zoomie.

2

u/RedditMcBurger Jul 27 '26

That's understandable, I use my Z1 in it's zoomed out mode and the near perfectly even circle with the sharp cutoff is beautiful to use.

u/Central_Incisor Jul 24 '26

One thing that helps a bike light is side optics to be seen. It can just be some white side plastic, but it is a bit different than a standard flashlight.

3X21D Bicycle Edition when?

7

u/Zak CRI baby Jul 24 '26

I already use a Convoy as a bike light with a striped TIR that does a pretty good job avoiding glare. I'd love to see a dedicated product that meets the follows the usual Convoy patters (field-replaceable standard battery, reasonably efficient driver options, good LED selection).

4

u/vatamatt97 Jul 24 '26

Awesome! My Lumintop B01 has been less than totally reliable of late and as a result I’ve been looking into some of the bike light builds people have done with Convoys. The strip lens looks to work alright, but a dedicated factory option with a purpose designed lens would be great.

4

u/thetuckie Jul 24 '26

That's great! I'm already using a convoy with a wide angle lens for mountain biking.

4

u/Fantastic-Skill-9119 Jul 24 '26

Awesome, gotta be rain resistant at the very least tho

3

u/freddbare Jul 24 '26

I am overdue for a proper upgrade

3

u/Cease_Cows_ Jul 24 '26

Can’t wait to see what he comes up with. I’m kind of a weight weenie when it comes to my bike so hopefully it’s decently efficient without a ton of cells

4

u/DaveNumber7 Jul 24 '26

Im very interested now to see the design. My ebike came with a headlight  but its a bit bulky, they say it's 850 lux, im not familiar with that rating. The lens is 3.5 " in diameter.

3

u/Finn1sher Jul 31 '26

Relative to most bike lighting, 850 lux is VERY BRIGHT. Popular dynamo lights and ebike headlights typically range from 40-160 lux.

3

u/Nene_Kushanagi Jul 24 '26

Super exciting! I'm currently running Emisar lights with modified optics and shields on my bike, I love this type of optic anyway, I'll be getting one if I can get 4000k.

3

u/sailorsapporo Jul 24 '26

Heck yes! Offer multiple blinky settings please!

3

u/JonBoyWhite Jul 24 '26

Please!!!!

6

u/geeered Jul 24 '26

Great news, I'd love options to replace existing lenses - maybe some 3x21 options?

And while we're at it, how about an option to replace the battery with a step-down voltage module that takes 12v-60v input for ebikes?

2

u/Finn1sher Jul 31 '26

You might be interested in the SPL-01 sold by Grin Technologies which is also a fantastic company for DIY ebikes. Can take input of various voltages, has a high beam and low beam setting, and wired toggle button for your bars. I think the light is originally from a Chinese company but it's basically impossible to track down so if you live in Canada or the US, it might be better to order directly from GRIN.

2

u/Mysterious_Radio_190 Jul 24 '26

LOL! I don't even own a bike, but I still wanna buy this upcoming bike light! 😁

2

u/Ecw218 Jul 24 '26

Much love for Ledil!!!…I built a daylight simulator with some super spot linear lenses. Very convincing effect.

2

u/AlejandroTheFnck Jul 24 '26

YEESSS give me some rosy-tinted night rides!!

2

u/crashbumper Jul 24 '26

I'd love this. I use a D4V2 or a D4K as my light for night MTB rides. a 21700 Lume driver with a high cri flood is a total game changer for riding. I hate all the 6000k dedicated mtb lights currently available.

2

u/walldodge Jul 24 '26

Hope it will be 21700 and not so big

2

u/Ok-Cartoonist-9271 Jul 25 '26

Bikes definitely need cut off lines now with how bright leds are.

3

u/Finn1sher Jul 31 '26 edited Jul 31 '26

Looking forward to this! I'll be interested to see what the mounting and control options are like. Flashlight style bike headlights can be handy, and probably what enthusiasts are looking for, but for day to day riding in town, what most people need is one solid brightness level, good battery life, and a permanent mount so they don't have to think about bringing lights. Similar to dynamo lights but battery powered setups are cheaper and easier to install.

I recently got a rack-mounted taillight that just stays there and is powered by a couple AAs - eventually, after several months of owning it, I'll have to grab a screwdriver and pop some rechargeables in. Even just having to bring my headlight instead of two lights is more convenient. I also got a Convoy S3 and striped TIR lens with plans to have a 3D printed permanent mount for it up front.

Practical bikes with permanent mounted lights are rare here, so everyone assumes it's an ebike now, lol.

u/kag0 Jul 30 '26

Time to upgrade my S21 with striped TIR

1

u/electromage Jul 30 '26

Great, I like the StVZO beam pattern but the high price and output limit makes them less useful for a lot of situations.

1

u/majaczos22 Jul 25 '26 edited Jul 25 '26

I'm not excited those type of lens usually give horrible beam, uneven with lots of artefacts and tint shift. Reflector setup like in the Lumintop B01 is much better.

1

u/needahyea Jul 26 '26

Actually, the mount is more important, especially when the road is bumpy.

Many DIY covers/lids can provide good cutoff for thrower. (Forgive me for picking a wrong reflector.)

4

u/LMP-Br Jul 26 '26

I think Simon will make a whole dedicated flashlight, with a dedicated mount too
