Discussion The inconsistency of online censorship is mildly infuriating

At this point, I don't even care anymore. It'll probably only get worse. You can discuss horrific violence online, but sometimes a harmless comment gets flagged for using the wrong word. You can watch people mock and insult someone endlessly, but a perfectly civil disagreement gets removed. You can discuss disturbing crimes, yet mentioning suicide in an educational or personal context can trigger restrictions.

Sometimes the exact same comment is acceptable in one community and forbidden in another. I understand why moderation exists. Threats, harassment, and genuine hate deserve consequences. But when the rules feel inconsistent, people stop knowing what's actually acceptable.

I don't expect unlimited free speech on private platforms. I'd just appreciate rules that are clear and applied consistently. Anyway, I've carefully read the rules before posting this. Hopefully discussing infuriating things is still allowed. Love you all!

I personally dislike online censorship because it takes away from the gravity of the situation or crime committed, but alas I must abide by the idea that it is a thing for people to make things like streaming an actual source of income. It really is infuriating. I think TikTok is the worst for it personally. It's not grape. It's rape. Please, stop negating the severity

I want to know who makes these rules. I picture one small group deciding.

"Is mildly infuriating."

There is a sub for that.

They wouldn't allow it.

Any censorship that's not something illegal by law should not exist, anyone in favor of any kind of censorship should get the death sentence

Dude there is a mod who responded in the comment section. Don't make me look bad! This is a big moment for me.

The issue is one community might get alot more comments with insults/slurs and profanity so they have precautions in place to remove those comments where as another sub won't get as much if those contributions and they'll just monitor and remove when necessary

I mod r/infuriating..8,000 comments a week that's a lot to monitor, so I have some automations set up to filter comments with keywords in them, but I keep a close eye on the filtered queue and remove/approve when necessary

If any comments are removed and the comment is in good faith, you can always send a quick ModMail and see if the mods can approve it for you, the issue is the system can't read the context some contributions are removed by mistake

Wow, a genuine big-time Reddit moderator! 8,000 comments a week?! I never imagined I'd have the honor of conversing with someone of such immense power and responsibility. I'll be telling my grandchildren about this. Thank you for taking time away from governing the masses to speak with a commoner like myself. 😂

I know it's frustrating how communities are run differently! Some you can't comment or post without having a certain amount of karma but they don't let the member know this when they join!?

Some communities seem to have a set of rules behind the set of rules that they keep to themselves, the contributions get removed the member asks why the post/comment was removed and they get banned! Just for asking!

There are some notorious subs (big communities) out there known to remove post/comment and issue bans for no particular reason

One of them I assume you tried posting to before they told you to post here!? 😅

You've answered so many of my questions! I've become a big Reddit fan, but some of my most popular posts mysteriously vanished just as they gained traction. I started experimenting and discovered that even mentioning moderators is like saying Voldemort at Hogwarts. 😂 But you've restored my faith! Apparently not every tiny internet kingdom is ruled by a power-hungry wizard with a delete button.

I think some of the larger communities have, lost the enjoyment and interest of moderating so they just try to make life as easy as possible for them, like people getting banned from there city's sub because of 1 comment, and that comment might have been okay by one mod but another mod will see it and will remove it and ban the user 🤷

Or say if your post got 600 upvotes, but it gets a 5 reports the mods can't be bothered with the reports they'll just remove it

Unless it low effort, contains slurs..or breaks a rule, nothing is getting removed, r/infuriating has like 4 banned members since 2012

Some subs just need to be avoided altogether though

On TikTok, I get my comments removed if I say the word "fool" but slurs remain.
