This is a complex issue. Obviously, businesses have to clean their dishes between use. But a business cannot guarantee an allergen-free environment.

In the US, many food places like this have signs stating so, asking people with allergies to speak to management about their specific concerns.

When I worked at Starbucks, we rinsed blenders between each use, but if someone told me they had an allergy, I would run it through the big sanitizer first.

One of my friend’s has a seafood allergy. She was prepping food at another of her friend’s place, the chopping board had been washed thoroughly but my friend still reacted to the seafood that was chopped on it earlier. Her hands swelled up like balloons n she had to go to hospital.

Even if things are washed, it doesn’t necessarily mean things will be safe if it’s an allergen, as you mentioned, putting the blender in the sanitiser, over just washing it, definitely helps more than just washing.

Yeah the quick rinse between drinks that Starbucks does is just a high pressure water blast. It doesn’t clean it. We did rely on people communicating with us.

It's also infuriating to have a business post a link of a story like this just to drive traffic to their website. Look who made the post, folks.

All the aggregators seem to be posting their links to this sub in particular. .

I'm guessing it's because they know the posts won't get taken down.

While this is extremely sad and infuriating… if you have a deathly allergy to anything food related, you shouldn’t be taking risks like this.

The article said that the charges the owner pled guilty to included failing to display potential allergens.

Hazelnuts aren't that common a milkshake ingredient, so it would be normal for someone to expect them to be posted if they were used. Especially since the law requires it.

Victim blaming

Not everyone has (the same) allergies. If they have to deep clean devices before every use we'd get nowhere. So you rinse and repeat until there's an exception. If the exception doesn't announce itself..

Doesn’t matter if it’s victim blaming, he’s right. She shouldn’t have ordered the shake in the first place.

Places are required by law to list all allergens that they use in food production. They didn't list it here, and the owner pled guilty to that very charge.

Blaming the victim knowing this (as it's in the article) is extremely infuriating

Literally everything is an allergen. You can quite literally be allergic to almost every substance on our planet.

It’s not possible to list every allergen in a product

As right as you are, there are common allergens, like tree nuts and peanuts that are usually warned against. It’s not unfair to assume that if they don’t have them listed, they don’t have them in the store, again, because it’s required to inform customers that your store used nuts.

feeling compelled to blame her is ridiculous. shes 12. its simply a tragedy.

This isn’t dressing up and getting raped. This is a willing decision to consume a food knowing that you have a serious allergy.

u/kechones 2d ago

Mitigated somewhat by them being a 12-year-old girl. At first look, I don’t know that I’d really BLAME anyone here. What a terrible tragedy.

That just makes me blame the parents too. At 12 a kid should know what they are allergic to and how serious it is.

13

They didn't list the allergens, the owner pled guilty to charges from that. Blaming her is exactly the same as blaming a rape victim

Poor kid. I don't have any major allergies, just intolerances. You learn fast that these 'pop-ups' are a rule unto themselves and are NEVER up to code. Half the freaking people doing them don't even know standard food safety laws. I think at this point they need to be banned unless they have proof of hiring actual chefs and cooks, and people who should freaking know not to use the same blender for everything.
I do wonder why she didn't have an EpiPen?

my father is an idiot who disregarded a fathers note about his kids allergy. Because he didn't believe such thing exists, as a chef 30y ago...kid had some reaction.

I really hate egoistic and ignorant people who are dumb af.

I was even surprised he'd tell me that

Restaurants are not as clean as everyone likes to think they are.

Source: The food poisoning symptoms I, as someone who actually does not use the raw meat spatula on cooked burgers at home, get nearly every time I eat at a restaurant.

u/HardLobster 2d ago

You are not getting food poisoning from that 😂

This story is from 2023. Is this what Reddit does? Regurgitate news stories from three years ago?

Check the date of the article. Looks like the official inquest result was just released.

It was probably on here back then, too, and probably once a month since.
