News The federal government is backing away from a decades-old disability rights promise

https://19thnews.org/2026/10/disabilities-olmstead-enforcement-federal-government/

In 1967, around 200,000 people with intellectual and developmental disabilities were confined to large institutions like asylums and state hospitals. By 2024, that number fell to 16,000 thanks in part to Supreme Court's 1999 Olmstead v. L.C. decision, where the majority held that the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act guarantees that people with disabilities have a right to live outside the walls of asylums, state hospitals and nursing homes.

More than two decades later, that right is under threat. In June, the Department of Justice published a memo stating that the federal government has no obligation to enforce Olmstead.

I wonder how they plan to address this? There is no real placement options for them in facilities anymore.

That's what these massive camps built to disappear people were made for

They started with immigrants and they're preparing for the next group of undesirables

I know like it sounds like hyperbole but I can fucking assure you the idea of killing them has gone around their discussion tables.

They are trying to either put them in a asylum and talked about using them as slaves in a work camp, the other option is for them to try to make it out on their own but if they end up homeless then they get fed into the for-profit prison system because they are cracking down on vagrancy to make more money.

My state is trying to only have two homeless shelters for the whole state and are trying to make it illegal to sleep in a car.

I would guess once they encounter the slave catcher cops they will be fed into either route.

Honestly, I think they want them to not exist anymore. They don't care how. Homeless, lack of care, imprisoned... etc. They just want them gone.

This makes me irrationally angry. Along with women’s reproductive rights, we told folks this would happen.
