How to handle 'you had to be there' moments?

This doesn't come up often, but to be prepared if it does:

Sometimes an amusing thing will occur to me and I'll reflexively smile or make some other small reaction to it. In this case it'll be in reaction to seeing a thing that reminds me of something else. The people around me (in this case) might then ask 'what's funny?', but lack the context.

Telling the story of why it was amusing to me will, probably, take long enough that it'll kill the actual humor stone-dead (as happens with explaining jokes, usually) but I don't want to just say 'nothing' because then it seems like I'm either being rude or randomly laughing at literally nothing.

There's etiquette for so many other things, there's probably something for this- what is it?

"Just a fleeting memory. Nothing of note."

You don't have to explain.

I think this is a situation in which a little white lie would be appropriate. If you say you were reminded of a joke, you’ll be expected to share the joke. However, if you say you were reminded of something similar in your past, there’s no explanation necessary. For example, you can say a song reminds you of a song you heard as a child, a non sequitur reminds you of something your grandfather used to say, a smell reminds you of your grandmother’s cooking, and so on. Just a pleasant memory from your childhood.

I want to thank you and acknowledge you for realizing that it would usually be inappropriate to launch into an unrelated personal anecdote in the middle of a conversation.

If there's a way to share it later, organically, go for it, especially if it's of general interest to the group. OTOH, nobody usually wants to hear a rambling, too-specific anecdote in the middle of an otherwise flowing conversation.

Otherwise a simple "oh nothing really, just remembered something from somewhere" is enough.

Thinking about this a little more...

If the random thought just occurs to you in the course of the gathering, I think some of the suggestions below are good.

I could see it differently if you (not actually you, but 'someone') was just kind of detached and smirking or giggling to themself, outside of the flow of the crowd. That might come off very differently and a question like 'what's funny' is somewhat more understandable.

I’d just say.. oh it just reminds me of something funny.

If they ask what … then I’d just say oh it it would take too long to explain and probably wouldn’t seem funny to others.

I always say “it’s a long story and I come off looking bad in it”
