How do you politely have hiccups in public?

I was standing in line for ice cream and the hiccups came. Then, the lady in front of me turned around and said, “excuse you”. She was pretty rude about it and I was embarrassed but the hiccups didn’t stop, so then it was just awkward.

The lady was rude. She might as well have told you don't blink. She made it awkward.

The breach in etiquette was not yours.

Saying “excuse you” is absolutely rude. No need to worry about etiquette here. It’s something beyond your control. If I had loud hiccups, I might say “excuse me” once, but not after she was so rude, I wouldn’t worry about that at all.

You can move yourself to an area away from people if they last longer than a minute or two. Especially since you can’t eat or order your ice cream while you’re hiccuping.

She may have thought you were burping or something. It doesn’t excuse her rudeness, but it’s not worth your energy to worry about someone else’s behavior.

That’s like somebody telling a heart attack victim they’re being rude for having a heart attack in public. And even if somebody is being rude, it’s actually a breach of etiquette to tell them they’re being rude.

It's only polite that you tell her "you are excused".

Or perhaps "I am already excused."

You can't control hiccups.

She was in the wrong here, not you.
