why do i feel safer staking eth on a regulated exchange than in defi?
staking eth for about three years now. started with lido, then tried rocket pool, even ran a validator for a while. but honestly the whole defi staking thing is starting to wear me down. smart contract risk, slashing risk, the tax nightmare of tracking all those tiny rewards. it's just a lot. lately ive been using gemini for a chunk of my eth. it's not as exciting as defi, and the yields are lower. but it's simple. i don't have to worry about a bug in a contract draining my funds. i don't have to spend hours figuring out cost basis for taxes. i stake and get a statement at the end of the year. for someone who just wants exposure to eth staking without the headache, it's been a decent option. i still keep some in lido because i believe in decentralization, but the regulated route has its place. anyone else split their staking like this? or am i just getting old and lazy?

It is bold to assume that Gemini is save after they pretty much lost and froze customers funds for 2 years after the genesis collapse in 2022. I think the customers were then finally made whole, but they funds were frozen for a long time. There are risks in every type of lending business. Some are more transparent and some just abstract the perceived risk away, even though it is still there.

I've been staking entirely on coinbase, unfortunately for the exact reasons. I hope that decentralized staking keeps maturing so that it becomes safer and easier for us.

That feeling is custody, the exchange holds the validator keys and shows you a clean dashboard so nothing looks like it can break. Staking through Lido gives you stETH you hold in your own wallet and exit through the withdrawal queue, and Rocket Pool or a solo validator keeps the keys with you if slashing risk is what you want control over.
