It felt good to see 2570… so long for now.

it never made sense why price was strong with macro as terrible as it is. Persistent inflation and incredibly high rates are truly the worst thing for risk assets. Hasn't stopped the AI train yet, but ETH is the easiest train on the planet to stop.

The new L2Beat blobs page is useful, but their explanation for retiring DABEAT is worth a read too. They says only 3 of the 38 projects they track posting data outside Ethereum actually verify the DA attestations on Ethereum. That gives us a useful question when comparing chains: what does Ethereum actually check before accepting their state? "Uses Celestia/EigenDA" on its own doesn't answer that. I appreciate public tools that make these dependencies visible as it makes it easier to judge what we're relying on rather than just compare brand names.

Just randomly looking at the validator queue, the entry queue has been falling since April. I guess it will tick up for a bit soon as the Metamask validators that are currently exiting try to reenter. (This rotation will also cause total staked to stop growing for a bit.) But the trend doesn't really seem supportive of the "all ETH will be staked at 1.5% APR" theory that the ultrasound money people tried to get us to change the protocol over?

what did we do to deserve this again

Deserve what? The market decided ETH's price six years ago, it's still there, give or take 50%.

It’s hard to keep the faith after this long

Username checks out I guess... how is it hard to keep the faith in the Crab if ETH crabs for almost a decade?!
3
u/hedgemagus 5h ago
The faith has always been north of 5k and the crab won. This is a quickly dying community at this point
3
u/confusedguy1212 5h ago
That. Exactly that. 200%.
Everybody likes to play the idealist here and price don’t matter but this ship is getting nearer to running its course if we keep this way. A decade of this with nothing to hope for doesn’t make capital stay in one place.

Nah, here's the secret:
The Ethereum network is too good for ETH to die. If it does, the whole blockchain experiment dies with it. So ETH has a hard bottom. Nobody knows where, but every dump is going to eventually pump back up.
But also, investors have moved on to other, more exciting things. It's just hardcore believers that still buy. So every pump is going to retrace.
Result: ETH is forever going to Crab. Hopefully with significant volatility, so LP positions keep yielding 20-30-40% yearly. Take advantage.
P.S.: We're going to have an "AI swarms are going to use blockchain" pump eventually. It's not going to get ETH past $5000, but it's gonna come close.
2
u/hedgemagus 4h ago
ETH may have a hard bottom but if it also has a hard top any sort of holder is wasting their time tbh. I guess it’s truly only meant to be day traded or leveraged
2
u/confusedguy1212 4h ago
When does that pump come?
But forget that. With ledger’s latest hack, isn’t the whole crypto experiment already starting to show it’s possible death? When even the most basic thing as keeping stock of your holdings becomes so far detached from the average joe after 15 years of this experiment?
Average Joe now says things like “store on exchanges”. 15 years! And that’s where we’re at. Full circle at store in a banks are deposit box basically??
I mean I want to be wrong on this. Please do knock some sense into me. Feed me some hope. I’m open to it just a bit foggy these days.

When the storm blows the sea
In the wind you'll wait for me And we'll meet by the quay
Sad and sweet and fair and free
So I go and it blows From a place where no man knows
And it holds and it grips And it sings to sunken ships
So we ride by the tide To the fates that hide inside
By the deep, by the dive By the dark I will survive
By the foam, by the spray I shall meet the coming day
Man the oars, beat the drums Hold tight, here it comes
No more sweat, no more blood Holy crab, only crab
No more sweat, no more blood Only crab, Holy crab
No more sweat, no more blood Only crab, only crab

Got downvoted for this nearly 4 weeks ago:
"a hardware wallet is just another thing that can be compromised."
1
u/baz0oka_Bob 6h ago
hardware wallet + associated software are 2 additional layers of risk. Having a dedicated phone/laptop is a simpler solution, but that's in a world where the hardware wallet guys make no $$$.
3
u/Stobie 9h ago
Simplicity so often under valued. But to extend that if no hardware wallet then you should definitely also have a cut down minimalist system dedicated to crypto and nothing else etc.

u/mini_miner1 6h ago
Ironically, my life would be so much simpler if I had never discovered crypto. Especially on red days, sigh.
1
u/WoodpeckerHorror3468 7h ago
yes. you wouldn't keep a life changing amount of crypto in a wallet on your web browsing (or anything else) device. Clone your wallet device to an emulator or VM, look up your keygen words offline on the cloned copy then wipe the clone.

I gave you advice. Good advice.

If you bought a Ledger Nano X in the last few months it would be prudent to make sure it does not have any additional spy hardware included. The guy who tweeted that they bought a tampered device from Mediamarkt, a famous German electronics retailer, posted a new video where they unboxed another Ledger Nano X from Mediamarkt. It was modified as well. This shows that it wasn't just a one off of a bad actor returning a device which they modified. As in yesterdays tweet, the hardware modification is much more crude than what was shown from the Malayan reseller, which could mean that there are different actors at work for these two cases. At the moment it looks like whole supply chains of Ledger could be compromised. I personally would be very careful with any Ledger Nano X bought in the last few months. There are hints that other Ledger devices could be compromised as well, but most people find it in the Nano X. Luckily the Nano Xs are easy to take apart to make sure that they are safe to use.

If you bought a Ledger Flex you must check it too. There are reports of Ledger Flexes that were tampered with too.

If their supply chains are this compromised, I wouldn't touch anything they sell.
I didn't know people were buying hardware wallets from third parties anyway. Why.

I definitely wouldn't buy anything from a Ledger reseller at the moment.

I am not sure why people go to Mediamarkt, but I can imagine some advantages. It is convenient and Ledger cannot leak your personal data when buying from another store. In the last few years contact information leaks were pretty high up on the awareness scale, compromised hardware wasn't. That seems to change now with this incident. I bought my last hardware wallet directly at the manufacturers booth at a conference. No personal details from me and I should be pretty safe that it is untampered hardware.
I am also curious if really only Ledger is affected, or if some other hardware wallet company is going to be affected as well.

At this point I truly don't understand how Ledger is still a working business.. Who in their right mind would choose to buy anything from them??

The value of a blockchain can increase even without a rise in the price of its native coin. Wouldn't falling gas costs resulting from Glamsterdam and Hegota be bad for ETH, then?
1
u/Stobie 9h ago
Unless eth/usd has a high enough price you can't increase value of assets on it beyond a point, it becomes insecure. It is very clear the value of ether and everything else is not derived from the amount spent on gas, it's more than a commodity. The prices are ~infinity % higher than they would be from that estimation.
2
u/hedgemagus 12h ago
Without another avenue for demand, yes. The scaling of Ethereum (a good thing!) destroys the thesis that you need ETH to use the network (could be a good thing unless this is the primary reason for ETH value)

I feel like I'm in a never-ending loop of depression with these prices.
Also sad to see people say "This is a quickly dying community at this point"
Waiting for the next time this sub has "is this gentlemen" comments again.
