I hear the "AI agents will use blockchain" take a lot lately, including from our man Tom Lee. Is there any data that suggests that it is happening or is it just science fiction for now?
1
u/mini_miner1 3d ago
If it would be that profitable, I feel like it'd be here already. Unless regulations are holding it back?
2
u/Ok-Nectarine-6654 3d ago
I would say ai agents who need permissionless access would use Ethereum. Others just use fiat APIs just as people do now. Correct me if I'm wrong, I don't see how this is becoming crypto advantage.ย

Seems there's a large ledger hack ongoing, $86M+ drained so far.

There are a lot of bits and pieces flying around with this exploit. If the stories are to be believed it was a pretty well executed hardware supply chain attack. Ledger had an authorized reseller (CryptoBilis) from Malaysia, but this resellers company was bought up by Chinese company, I do not know when this happened though. The former owner signed a contract that he was not allowed to tell anyone about this ownership change until October 19th. The new company then took all Ledgers apart and added am additional CPU which could read all the text that was shown on the screen, extracted generated seed words and sent these to back to the reseller by using the additionally added LTE modem with eSIM and antenna. That is how the reseller got at the seed phrases from anyone who bought ledgers from them. The Ledger software and hardware integrity check could not detect anything, because nothing was replaced in the original Ledger hardware. They just added additional hardware close to the screen. This cannot be detected by a software check. Apparently such an attack is not new, but the scale at which it was executed is pretty impressive. I was also not aware one could put much additional hardware into a Ledger Nano X enclosure.
As said above, I am not sure that this is the whole or even correct story, but that is how I would stitch it together from what I read.

Pretty wild. So, will Ledger now recommend users disassemble their wallets to ensure they don't contain weird parts? LOL

"Ledger is investigating reports of loss of funds from users in South East Asia who purchased products from a reseller named CryptoBillis. As a precaution, and pending the results of our investigation, we have asked CryptoBilis to pause all sales and shipments of Ledger devices. We recommend Ledger users who purchased from this reseller in the last 90 days to not initiate set up if you have not done so yet. If you have set up your Ledger device, consider moving assets to a new Ledger signer (with new seed). We will continue to inform customers of updates as the investigation progresses.
Reach out to Ledger customer support through official channels with any questions: https://support.ledger.com"

Were these users skipping the 'genuine software check' ?
1
u/jtnichol MOD BOD 3d ago
Who knows maybe they were using some kind of seed phrase they stored on the cloud
2
u/eth10kIsFUD 3d ago edited 3d ago
no, see comment below.
Seems to be a physically implanted piece of hardware inside the ledger.
If that's the case then the software and firmware could have been genuine and on a fresh setup with new seed.
1
u/timmerwb 3d ago
To compromise the official compliance check and then have a fresh seed hacked, would be a catastrophe and Ledger would be dead, along with an incalculable amount of funds.
5
u/eth10kIsFUD 3d ago
.. Yet that's exactly what happened.
Looks like it's a completely separate chip on the device that just reads the display when generating the seed during a fresh setup. And then uses an eSIM to send it out.
Everything else is genuine, so official everything, genuine software genuine firmware and fresh seed. :)

In a weird twist: mr. MagicalTux (yes) is on the investigation:

Canโt believe this dude is back in the game. This space is so crazy itโs insane he happened to be investigating this while it happened in the wild. Insane.

u/oxyeth 3d ago
Still, when I hear his name itโs usually within 2 sentences of something bad happening.. Why the soft spot? As I recall he was posting motivational beach pictures about him being so zen right after his business got drained. Iโm still suspicious of him.
1
u/somedaysitsdark 2d ago
I'll try to make it short, but Mt. Gox turning into a cryptocurrency exchange was a freak accident.
I'm not trying to excuse him from his actions, but I really empathize for this geeky guy that kinda accidentally fell into running a finance company that was beyond his abilities.
It was clear to me towards the end that he really didn't want to manage it, he wanted to work on other projects. Unlike a lot of entrepreneurs, I think the dude genuinely feels guilty about people losing money because of his inability to manage.
And that is why it's nice to see him out there being a geeky guy working on projects again and seeing that he's trying to help people. ๐ฅฐ
I have a big soft spot for him.

I think you can thank the "escape to the bunker"-message for sending ETH back to 0.03 single-handedly. About as subtle and coordinated as a drunk late night twitter post.

u/timmerwb 3d ago
Huh? The entire tech market receded. ETH always dumps hardest.Another case of narrative following price.
3
u/tutamtumikia 3d ago
I would be surprised if that caused the drop. Its just as likely its something completely unrelated.
5
u/somedaysitsdark 3d ago
I think his post was kinda irresponsible. He can push for accelerating upgrades towards being quantum/ECDSA proof without telling everyone to hide their assets in a bunker that won't matter if addresses start getting compromised anyway.
If shit hits the fan, my eth is going to zero whether or not it's in an address with no transactions.
3
u/confusedguy1212 3d ago
His post WAS irresponsible. In general heโs been side questing us for a bit and itโs getting quite annoying.
1
u/edmundedgar reality.eth 3d ago
I blame Twitter, it trains people to say whatever will get clicks.
Like "let's switch to use-once addresses" might be a meaningful security improvement, but we can address it as a wallet improvement (contract holds your funds, wallet rotates controlling key each transaction) rather than the whole "bunker" phrasing which makes people think they have to stop transacting.

This guy is so annoying, constantly bashing any attempt at a sustainable issuance model for Ethereum.
We need to fix issuance!
1
u/LargePup 3d ago
I donโt know. With the staking yield being the risk free rate that all of defi is based on, reducing the staking yield may have the effect similar to a sovereign partial bond defaultย
1
u/eth10kIsFUD 2d ago
The part of defi that is only there because of useless issuance is itself useless, and thinking that this useless part of defi adds value to Ethereum is misguided imo.
Staking yield should not be seen as the "risk free rate", but i agree some probably see it like that which is itself a problem.
The most important thing is ensuring that Ethereum remains secure forever, and that we don't onboard a ton of centralized third parties just because of a broken issuance model. We should not punish people for holding vanilla ETH as that is in fact the best version of ETH! We should not push people into giving their ETH to these staking companies!
4
u/HauntedJockStrap88 3d ago
Fr. Feels like ETH the assetโs value is the last thing on every core Ethereum devโs mind. Identify problems and create solutions, of course. But can our most important contributors PLEASE stop acting like asset price is below them?

u/confusedguy1212 3d ago

Originally, we were going to have a podcast today, but I got up to the office and I donโt have access to my office due to an event going on and the coordinator did not coordinate with me
I have no backup equipment to do the podcast in another location in Time.
I might try to do this on Monday

u/haurog 3d ago
Nooo, I am sitting here and wondering why there isn't any livestream on the EVMavericks youtube channel.
3
u/jtnichol MOD BOD 3d ago
I think Iโm still gonna get it recorded, but itโs gonna have to be Monday. I was kind of pissed off at the coordinator about the lack of communication as to whether I would have access to my office this weekend or not.
Anyway, turns out they got a wedding today and tomorrow and I have to DJ tomorrow night
Iโm not doing shit on Sunday
